Name changed as I've commented

Why do women not see the issue with people renting wombs?

Ha! It's obvious who you are from the comments on the IG post

Londisc · 30/08/2023 15:08

The diary shows that the sister and brother had to convince the brother's wife to let them do this because the sister wanted to make her younger brother happy. It doesn't give the impression they had thought it through properly at all. What a mess.

I think it's a sign of how low the bar is with celebrity surrogacy that my first thought was that at least they name checked the surrogate rather than completely ignoring her...

Is her Instagram now deleted?

identiy102 · 30/08/2023 15:24

Ahhh how lovely,

Everything about them turns my stomach

The rent a womb
The Daddy Diaries documentary
The name Locke Locke : cant forget that
The fact these guys have an agent
The magazine cover

The surrogate has 18.7k followers on insta!!!

These babies are precious human lives and yet they're being commodified

cameldigits · 30/08/2023 15:35

They clearly use the double Locke because it's incredibly unusual (and therefore good brand identity)

Mayhemmumma · 30/08/2023 15:42

Buying a baby is disgusting. Even worse when children are taken from different countries.

Me? I don't really do Instagram. I've never even looked at their feed

Do you apply that thinking to women who sell their bodies for sex too? You're a "sex work is work" type, aren't you?

Not at all! I’m not even very pro choice when it comes to abortion. Wouldn’t judge though. I’m uneasy about surrogacy, but if it is the only way an infertile woman can have a baby, who I am to judge…

Having a baby isn't a right for anyone. There are other avenues for infertile people rather than using another woman like a broodmare.

If the surrogate is staying in their lives, what will they say to the children when they ask about their mother? I have nothing at all against gay men parenting children but it’s a natural question given that mothers are everywhere in society. And how do you then explain that someone gave birth to you, but gave you to someone else to raise and knows you and spends time with you but doesn’t view you as her child (but has other children that she has brought up as a mother). And then add the donor egg issue in and what that means for you.

I hope they will have plenty of money for psychological support for their children as that all sounds really upsetting to me.

It really does. I am trying to put myself in the position of those babies in the future but it's too much for me to get my head round.

As I said before, poor babies.

Their first attempt was a great example of international baby trafficking:
"It's been wild. We've had to go to Mexico because we couldn't get to go to America. We've had an egg donor from Brazil, willing it to work. Mexico went into lockdown. We had to get embryos flown to Cyprus from Mexico because we had seen the face of the egg donor," Ollie said.

That surrogate miscarried. They then implanted two embryos into another woman who also miscarried. They've finally persuaded a third woman to carry two embryos for them, putting her body at enormous risk.

What evidence is there that they will be great parents? Confused

What evidence is there that anyone will be a great parent?

Clymene · 31/08/2023 21:44

I think if you know someone and you're already a parent, you can make an educated guess @annahay. I've been a referee for two lots of friends adopting so I've had a go. So far, they're doing great so I guess I called it right.

In this instance, I was replying to another poster who was gushing they'd make 'great parents'. I don't think anyone can make that assertion about anyone unless they've known them years and seen them in all kinds of situations - stressful and fun - and watched their interaction with children.

I don't think you can know much about someone if you follow them on social media. I'm aware that people think they do.

nationallampoons · 31/08/2023 21:49

Vile. It needs to be outlawed

Londisc · 31/08/2023 21:54

You have said they had 3 surrogates. I don't think they have. I think they had 2 rounds with one surrogate, who they said was and remains 'like family' even after it didn't work out, and then were advised to try another surrogate who miscarried then delivered twins. They've been criticised for targeting twins when they say that the 4th attempt was the first time 2 embryos were implanted on the advice of The London Women's Clinic. Stick with facts. You can't say that these people won't be great parents just because the two couples you advocated for to become adoptive parents have so far done great and because you have children yourself. That's ridiculous and arrogant and on a par with the kind of nonsense the tv reality clowns are coming out with. The one thing I would think is they're not great parents because they are exploiting their kids for entertainment and that's the same for tv celebrity clowns like Katie Price and co. That's not about surrogacy.

Londisc · 31/08/2023 22:05

The longitudinal study that has followed kids from age 1 to 20 is still concluding that kids from surrogacy and gamete donation are doing just as well psychologically as the control group peers who are conceived naturally, particularly if they are made aware of their origins and the nature of their conception from a very young age. I actually am not convinced surrogacy is a good idea at all but that's because it causes complications for the adults involved, not the children. Of course the major concern is exploitation of women in poverty.

I don't know how many women they've exploited exactly. I do know this is their 4th time of buying eggs from women and flying them to another country to be implanted into a different woman buy her babies.

I only mentioned the 'great parents' thing as someone said they thought they would be great parents. I was just countering that assertion. The only reason I mentioned my friends who have adopted is that is the only time I've ever really thought about it and I don't think it's something anyone should say lightly.

I have no idea whether they'd make great parents or shit ones. I don't know them. And I suspect the person who said they'd be great parents doesn't know them either.

I agree with you that their exploitation and monetisation of the whole process so far doesn't look good for the babies.

BabyStopCryin · 18/01/2024 08:23

No idea who these two are. I can see they are selling their story Hohum.

Why are they thanking 3 hospitals and the NHS? Have WE paid for this?
