Why do women not see the issue with people renting wombs?

@Spirallingdownwards - do you know them? Or is that your assumption based on their Instagram?

Still waiting for the story where a rich celebrity is a surrogate for an ordinary couple..

These babies are with their biological father and far from being abandoned they have actively sought to bring them into the world. They are surrounded by loving parents, their surrogate is to remain in their lives the fathers have a great and loving network around them. They will grow up surrounded by love and with lovely people in their lives and fortunately not by some of the sour and bigoted people commenting on this thread.

Did you actually read what I wrote? My husband was not abandoned, his natural parents lovingly gave him to people who would be better equipped (his natural parents were 15). He had a lovely childhood surrounded by love. He's still messed up. He's been in therapy and literally been told that he has abandonment issues due to being separated from his mum.

Maybe you have different experiences but don't call me a bigot because my, and my husband's, experiences differ from yours.

The judgement here is bewildering. All these assumptions from looking at the photo of them.

This post basically feels like gatekeeping. The possibility is there for a loving couple (who can't possibly have their own biological child) to raise a baby. Why take issue?

Because buying and selling babies and renting women's wombs is morally and ethically reprehensible

Clymene · 29/08/2023 17:30

Surrogacy is currently illegal in most of Europe and in many countries in Asia.

No one here knows them and neither do you.

But that doesn't stop you from spouting your personal view.

It just so happens most disagree with you.. Thank goodness

This!

It really saddens me that fans of these vacuous people find the argument against buying babies so difficult to comprehend.

But surely only bigots don't support it? 🤔

greengobbledygook · 29/08/2023 17:38

@Clymene

She done it out of free will, contacted them first. It's as simple as wanting to help in this case.

I don't disagree it can be a predatory industry but it's not one size fits all.

Snowflake2023 · 29/08/2023 17:40

There are truths that are self-evident. One of which is that it is morally wrong to buy and sell human beings.

This statement is not altered by the age of the human being sold or the orientation of the individuals buying the human being. It is fundamentally wrong to traffic in human life, no matter how it is presented on social media.

People howling bigotry or accusations of being judgemental does not diminish the fundamental right of the child to not be treated as a commodity for trade.

This issue is much bigger that sexuality or fertility rights and goes to the core of what is acceptable in our society. Its disturbing that people cannot see beyond the social media posts to what's at the heart of this issue.

So you don’t agree with ‘Woman’s body, her choice’?

Mumofteenandtween · 29/08/2023 17:40

I’ve told this story many times on surrogacy threads.

When I gave birth to dd it went very wrong and I ended up haemorrhaging. About 2 hours after dd was born me, her and dh were back in the room with the doctors and the midwife and they had managed to stabilise me but I was still only semi conscious.

Dh was holding dd and doing everything right. Skin to skin, talking to her. But he suddenly realised that she didn’t look well at all. Her colour was wrong, her breathing was very fast and shallow and she kept giving these tiny moans as if in pain.

The midwife bleeped the doctor but whilst waiting she got dh to lie dd on my chest. At which point dd immediately got completely better within minutes.

At two hours old she was basically having a panic attack. But the second she could hear my heartbeat / smell my skin she was fine again.

She needed me and no one else would do. Including her biological father.

No it isn't based on their Instagram.

longwayoff · 29/08/2023 17:42

Repellent. I assume lawyers are sitting back and counting the years until these poor kids reach their majority and start suing the people who bred them. Slavery with another name. I thought buying people is illegal.

They haven't bought their child in this case.

It's sad people feel they have the right to abuse anyone, even loving parents.

I think Ollie and Gareth will be terrific parents. Bex their surrogate has been and apparently will be continued to be included in their lives. I think its pretty nasty of people who can't see that she has done a wonderful thing for a gay couple who will love, care and provide for their children.

Edited

I think it's pretty nasty to rent a woman's body part, but then hey I think women are human so...

Clymene · 29/08/2023 17:46

Buying and selling babies is child trafficking. The Locke-Lockes were involved in that and only stopped because it didn't work.

A woman selling her babies doesn't mean anything. A lot of desperate people will do pretty much anything for fame and money. What's very clear is that wealthy and successful women don't become surrogates.

VeronicaSawyer89 · 29/08/2023 17:47

Notamum12345577 · 29/08/2023 17:40

Do you apply that thinking to women who sell their bodies for sex too? You're a "sex work is work" type, aren't you?

Clymene · 29/08/2023 17:47

The average fee a surrogate gets in the U.K. is £16,000-20,000. I'd imagine for being willing to put your body at risk by carrying twins, you'd be able to charge a lot more.

Using the term abuse is now a really clichéd argument to try to stop people raising their voices and asking important questions. Its a mechanism to shut down conversations.

Luckily though it's been so overused it's now becoming more of an indicator that people are asking the right questions. So thanks for validating that.
