Tw: upsetting content

Why was this woman arrested like this!?! Her poor child!

According to other Tweeters, she had paid her bus fare BTW.

She apparently refused to show them the inspector that she had paid for her journey. Still no reason to treat her so terribly and clearly has racist undertones.

Wowzel · 24/07/2023 22:24

It's horrible to watch, especially with her child so upset and being comforted.

I don't really understand how it got to that point though, why didn't she show her ticket?

NotBotheredAnymore · 24/07/2023 22:25

One woman left the bus after not complying with a revenue inspector's request to check that she has paid her fare. When asked to stop by police she attempted to walk off and became abusive. As a result she was arrested on suspicion of fare evasion and detained.
'When it was later established that the woman had paid she was de-arrested and allowed to go on her way.

If the above is true, why did she try to walk away?

ToBeOrNotToBee · 24/07/2023 22:27

Tfl conditions of carriage are that you show proof of purchase on demand.
Tfl revenue inspectors and police went on bus. She refused to show ticket and instead fled the bus. She was arrested on suspicion of fare evasion and subsequently de-arrested when it was known She had paid.
The whole saga needn't had happened if she hadn't been a total weirdo.

TheHorneSection · 24/07/2023 22:28

There’s a lot that doesn’t add up about this story. Why didn’t she just show the ticket inspector her ticket/charge? Why did she then refuse the same for both a PCSO and a PC? Why did she get abusive?

TERFinTheHouse · 24/07/2023 22:31

But why wasn't she just issued a penalty if she refused to show her ticket? Why the arrest?

cansu · 24/07/2023 22:32

Arresting someone for not showing a bus ticket is not proportionate.

TakenRoot · 24/07/2023 22:35

So even if ticket inspectors call the police, are the police not capable of talking to someone without handcuffing and manhandling them?

TheHorneSection · 24/07/2023 22:35

She was arrested because she kept trying to walk away and so looked like she was trying to evade paying the fare. It wasn’t - oh, she won’t show her ticket, arrest her straight away. She kept refusing to show it and tried to leave.

24252627a · 24/07/2023 22:37

I don’t don’t that she was in the right here.
But she was clearly resisting arrest and causing more upset to her child.
To calm the situation, she should have remained calm herself and not allowed it to escalate to this point.

murasaki · 24/07/2023 22:37

You don't get a ticket as such, but if you tap the card you paid with on the inspector's reader, it shows if you've paid, no idea how, re a bank card, but it works for me on the trains when using contactless. So why she didn't do that is confusing.

Soontobe60 · 24/07/2023 22:37

TERFinTheHouse · 24/07/2023 22:31

But why wasn't she just issued a penalty if she refused to show her ticket? Why the arrest?

Because she was walking away - presumably not complying with the request to show a valid ticket. The police were there to support TfL ticket inspectors carry out their job.
What would you suggest should happen in this situation?

frecklejuice · 24/07/2023 22:40

This escalated because of her not co-operating, if someone asks to see your ticket then just show them and get on with your day. Why cause a huge fuss especially in front of your child?

BBC News story

A local MP asking people to be careful sharing the video on social media because of the trauma caused to the child. But the police don't know who the woman is, so presumably the MP wasn't quoting a request from the family. I haven't watched the video.

Badbudgeter · 24/07/2023 22:42

It all seems very unnecessary. I don’t really understand why someone wouldn’t show proof of payment if they had it. Unless the inspector had made a bee line for her on the bus and made her feel uncomfortable. A friend of mine was burgled recently and they didn’t even pop round but four officers for a couple of quid fare.

Buses have shitloads of cameras, take a photo, identify persistent fare evaders, take action but really the police seemed unnecessarily physical over a bus fare.

Statement from the MET.

Switcher · 24/07/2023 22:50

It all seems a bit bizarre. Not really sure what happened for it to escalate like that. Almost seems set up.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 24/07/2023 22:53

I don't know why she didn't just show her ticket? She was partly responsible for upsetting her little boy.
It's the little boy I feel sorry for.

londonmummy1966 · 24/07/2023 22:54

Unless the inspector had made a bee line for her on the bus and made her feel uncomfortable.

THere's a lot of aggression from one ethnic group in Croydon to black people and I wouldn't mind betting that this is the case here.

TheUsualChaos · 24/07/2023 22:54

Why wouldn't she just show her proof of payment? Why behave like that in front of her own child? Poor boy, he must have felt so scared. Why the drama over such a minor issue which she could have easily resolved. Very, very odd.

chutneysauce · 24/07/2023 22:57

I love how many people are believing the police version. Would love to see the whole clip and why she didn't produce a ticket if she had one when asked. There is definitely more to this then what the police have said in my opinion.

Kinneddar · 24/07/2023 22:57

The video is only showing a snapshot of the incident from one angle. It's not showing what happened leading up to it. But SM aren't interested in the possibility the facts might get in the way of a story
