Hate the term real women have curves

I know this has probably been done to death, but I honestly hate the term 'real women have curves' , only 'dogs like bones' etc etc etc.....i hear and see it everywhere!!!! Another way to body shame women and to make women feel the only relevant thing about them is their body. You'd think this would have died down but I feel its become worse

It's all bollocks, isn't it? Remember feeling like shit when I was a skinny minnie teen. "Real women" are anyone who is female - that's it! That's all you need to be! You can be feminine, masculine, a total cow, a nun, a Libra, whatever.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 04/07/2023 19:07

I see it all the time, posted by women "with curves" mostly, and by the occassional "appreciative" man.
I keep quiet though, I'm like an ironing board and feel like if I said something it would be awkward.

EightyfirstCat · 04/07/2023 19:14

Yes it's shit. Just more body shaming. We all come in different shapes and sizes.

Beanscene · 04/07/2023 22:14

Its everywhere!!!! @deydododatdodontdeydo i try to keep quiet too for same reasons but it's infuriating. Bodies are in all shapes and sizes plus it's rare for someone's body to stay the same shape/size in life. But to hear this from other women especially is degrading. I've always been small/thin but am very much a 'real woman!!!! '. It's along the lines of the gender/trans issues going on at the moment with trying to bring women down by saying we are people-not women (or whatever... I realise I've probably worded this wrong) :)

Yes it's disgusting (as a curvy woman)
We literally can't fucking win as women, can we

Dotandtime · 04/07/2023 22:25

Oh. The context I've always assumed is curvy women trying to convince themselves. I've never thought that it might be an insult to those of us without curves. A shame that they feel the need but not a statement about other body types.

Yes, this is how I've always taken it.

I've always been pretty slim. And the only time I've heard it in person, as opposed to it's frequent appearance online, was by other women, who I would class as overweight. Usually said in that passive aggressive way when someone is talking to another person, but clearly directed at you, for you to hear.

labamba007 · 04/07/2023 22:32

I'm overweight and find it ridiculous. What is a real woman any way? My friends who are also overweight or obese also hate it.

Hiddencomic · 04/07/2023 22:35

Agree.. I’m a size 16 and a real woman. Pretty sure I’d still be a real woman if I was a size 8 or a size 28 too! Thin shaming is just as unacceptable as fat shaming ffs.

QueefQueen80s · 04/07/2023 22:35

I'm curvy and can't stand it, we are all real women!

DuesToTheDirt · 04/07/2023 22:39

I'm not very curvy at all, so I'm obviously a fake woman.

Beanscene · 04/07/2023 22:43

It's a bit like saying 'real men are 6ft tall!!' it's another form of body shaming...if it was put across as... 'real women are thin!!' the backlash would be horrendous.

Well, real women are adult human females.
That's it. No further descriptors necessary.

CrumpetsBeotch · 04/07/2023 23:04

I've only ever heard it used by overweight women that are more fat than curvy tbh.

Nsky62 · 04/07/2023 23:16

Normally to describe overweight, obese …………as if it means acceptable, any more than no meat on bones.
I’d rather not have a post menopausal body at 61, bit overweight trying to lose a bit.
Biologicial women are all women

roseopose · 04/07/2023 23:24

I've never got above 7.5st apart from when pregnant due to a number of weird conditions and abnormalities I was born with. I was tube fed for 8 years as a child and it was horrific and embarrassing for me. I've always been made to feel like shit about my weight by other women and even when I explain why I'm so slim despite eating a load of rubbish they don't believe me or tell me how lucky I am to have these conditions. Even a nurse when weighing me told me she'd 'love to have a bit of that especially around Christmas!' I have also been accused of being anorexic and bulimic by colleagues so feel self conscious eating at work. Quite often had my lunch analysed, head shaking over how I stay so slim then 'well men like a bit of weight on a woman' or similar. Personally I don't think being slim is any easier, and seemingly less acceptable, than being overweight.

This.

continentallentil · 04/07/2023 23:43

I’ve never heard anyone say it in real life, but it is ludicrous

continentallentil · 04/07/2023 23:44

I say this as a fat person..

QueefQueen80s · 05/07/2023 00:57

I've mostly heard it from men tbh.

I've only ever heard it said by men, or in ads.

CrumpetsBeotch · 05/07/2023 01:20

I'd be surprised if they could get away with saying that in ads nowadays.

MouseSculptureMadeOfOldHairbrushFluff · 05/07/2023 01:21

It was back in the Wonderbra ad days of the 90s

CrumpetsBeotch · 05/07/2023 01:25

Ah OK. Makes sense. Those women were genuinely curvy though. Not overweight. Although ofc that doesn't make them any more or less female.

whiteroseredrose · 05/07/2023 06:59

I think the idea behind it is that we should accept our bodies as they are and not feel the need to starve ourselves to feel attractive.

I can't remember which model it was that was interviewed years ago when she retired; she was talking about all the wonderful places she'd been and things she'd done with her job. However she said that she hadn't had a decent meal in her life and had been permanently hungry since her teens. She was looking forward actually to eating.

That clearly wasn't her natural body if she was permanently hungry.

So naturally skinny or a bit plumper, we are what we are - get on with living not worrying.
