Pregnant NYC Bike "Karen" was the victim, not the agressor

Trial by social media for a pregnant woman who cried when a man tried to steal the bike she's hired is tried and hung by social media, and put on unpaid leave from her job, with no evidence or investigation:

https://www.bicycling.com/news/a43920956/pregnant-nyc-karen-on-video-trying-to-steal-a-black-mans-citi-bike/

https://news.yahoo.com/receipts-show-hospital-worker-accused-170920174.html

It turns out she had paid for the bike and he has no evidence he paid. But he is not the subject of the internets wrath, no consequences for him.

I hope she takes her employers to court and wins a massive settlement. Surreal levels of misogyny and hatred directed to a pregnant healthcare worker who did nothing wrong at all.

Will this ever be recognised for what it is?

Not buying that schools wouldn't listen to a parent contacting them to discuss their child. Or that they would disregard a parent because they are black. Not in any school I've ever worked in, anyway.

This happens to black people every day. Your points is?

My point is it is wrong. It is wrong when it happens to black people and it is wrong when it happens to white people.

Do you agree?

Black people are disproportionately on the receiving end of judgements like these. They are almost always perceived as the aggressors generally by white people who are backed up by structural and institution bias. My black friends and I still can't walk around shops without being followed, in spite of our advancing age and the fact that it is clear by our dress and general turnout, that we are professional women. I don't believe that this is an equally problem for white people.

I'll add that to the list of things that you don't believe black people about.

That you don't find call it violence helpful is hardly surprising. You recognise the weaponised white tears of the girls at your school. You recognised how they are used to punish black girls, you acknowledge disparity in power and the stereotypes at play, but is just a problem. Curious, do you feel complicit?

At times, yes, I’ve felt complicit and it’s a deeply uncomfortable feeling. There’s a lot of pressure in teaching to back colleagues up publicly over issues of discipline and it can be tricky to speak out about this kind of thing.

I’m now senior enough that I am in a position to step in and speak up more and so I feel more able to do something about decisions that seem unfair. To those saying that they don’t think this happens in schools… we are a very diverse school in a very “lefty” part of the country. If it happens in our school then trust me, it happens everywhere. Once you start seeing it, you see it everywhere. In the smallest interactions white (and some other ethnicity) students are just cut more slack than their black peers.

I’m not minimising it. I didn’t say it was just anything, but it is patently and meaningfully different to being raped or having the shit kicked out of you. And as a safeguarding lead I deal with both of those things with depressing regularity nowadays.

You didn’t answer my question. And we are in a thread about a white woman who has been suspended from her job because of presumed guilt.

I think it’s pretty clear that you, like some other pp on this thread, believe it is not wrong to judge people based on the colour of their skin if they are white. This was my original point and as I said before, discussion on this is pretty futile with people who believe in judging people based on the colour of their skin so I’ll leave you to it.

HypocrisyRules · 20/05/2023 18:57

I believe the woman, not because she is white, but because she is the woman.

I can't do this. I believe what I see. A woman is as capable of being at fault as much as a man. I don't have blind or biased belief in people.

If you're capable of believing her just because she's a woman, I'll safely assume you're capable of believing her over a black person, just because she's white. The same concept of bias you've just admitted to.

Absolutely. Thank you

You cannot compare victims of racism, rape and those that have been beaten up. To do so is divisive and does a disservice to each victim.

Takoneko · 20/05/2023 21:20

I didn’t compare it. The opposite. I said they are totally different categories of thing. There’s violence and then there’s other things that can also be very damaging. Rape and beating up can also be acts of racism. Racism can manifest as violence. I just don’t agree that words or tears can ever be violence. They can be damaging, they can be racist, they can incite violence but they are not, in themselves, violence. I’m not sure that we really fundamentally disagree over much except vocabulary. I’m not meaning to be argumentative or combative. I’ve just explained why I don’t think we should start using the word violence for things that do not meet the commonly understood definitions of the word.

You'll say this about colour of skin but you'll not say it about people like you who judge others based on their sex (Men) because of your experience and others'. The hypocrisy rears its head time and time again.

White is right.
White woman is right.

Eh? I’m the one saying don’t judge people based on the colour of their skin. Your “White is right. White woman is right” comment makes no sense. Are you perhaps projecting?

I don’t believe you should judge people based on their sex. I’m not sure why you made up that I do.

ImAvingOops · 20/05/2023 22:39

That it's possible to say men (as a class) are more dangerous than women, comes from all the crime statistics. It's not the same as making generalisations about people's personality traits or behaviours based solely on their skin colour.

You're a deluded group of misogynists, and the only reason people are no longer responding is that they see the pointlessness of debating with anyone so prejudiced.

Meanwhile, in the real world, even the commentators who originally criticised the nurse are eating humble pie.

Actually it is accurate describe SOME white feminists as being an extension to the patriarchy when it comes their insistence on ignoring the fact that women from black and other ethnic groups face unique challenges. It is possible to respect, explore and debate commonalities and differences between women from varying ethnicities or cultures just not with people who insist that a common lived reality, that they just don't happen to have experienced, does not exist.

What an aggressive and nasty lash-out post from the so-called feminist 'MissLucy', who seems triggered. You must be a feminist only when it suits you and towards those you deem worthy.

If I'm to maintain my theme of playing you at your own game, I'd also say that you and your cohorts are a deluded group of racists and you seem to be the chair-racist and spokesperson judging by this part of your own post: "...and the only reason people are no longer responding".

I take it you've had your usual meeting and you've all agreed to stop posting, hence you know exactly why 'people are no longer responding'.

The irony. The racists here, are the posters who have decided that the woman involved in the incident must have been the aggressor, with no evidence other than the colour of her skin.

Any comment to make on the fact that news commentators who made the same prejudiced assumptions as you, are now backing down and apologising?
