Not to diminish how upsetting this story is, and how desperate those parents must be, but child marriage is still legal in 46 US states. I can't link but easy enough to google. The youngest girls, in Tennessee, have been ten years old (in 2001). I remember hearing about a little girl of around 12/13 who was married off to her father's friend. That was in Louisiana, I think. Always predators ready to take advantage. And as yet, no right to divorce or domestic abuse shelters for these children. So yes, the good ole US of A still has a long way to go in some areas.

I read the women for women link. They’re not able to operate yet. Chances are, they never will under the Taliban.

I feel so angry and powerless, but I’m not sure there is anything we can do under the current regime.

The hypocrisy disgusts me though- surely as a good Muslim if a family is selling a child due to starvation you should donate to feed them not pay to rape their daughter. It’s sickening.

Quelle surprise that the most repressive, women-hating regime on earth will stop girls going to school in the name of God, but not child rape. Where is the condemnation and outrage from the Afghanistan communities in that country for the paedophiles doing this?

It’s so easy to make bold statements from the comfort of our safe lives (presuming you are in a safe country?). These people are in a position that none of us are ever likely to face. An impossible position.

Awful situation but in Kandahar province, it was normal to sell a cute teenage son for sex and dancing until the taliban banned it.

The human survival instinct is as strong as that of any other animal. People in extreme circumstances take extreme actions.
Thankfully, most of the people posting her will never be forced to those extremes.

I was coming to recommend Women for Afghan Women too. Their work is so desperately needed. ActionAid and IRC are both running appeals for Afghanistan, but less targeted. That said, more people fed and with alternative income or support is going to have benefits for women and girls beyond simply being fed.

The other thing we can all do is lobby governments for a permanent, supported asylum route for Afghani women and girls, with clear and safe access to visas. There should be no other qualification for asylum required than that you are a female from Afghanistan.

So much of this is because of our and the US’s fuckup. We should be doing everything we can to put it right.

I'm sorry but my whole family would starve to death, or I would put us all out of our misery before I sold my daughter to be raped and abused. Selling babies/young girls to adult males and we all know what it's for, is fucking horrendous. It makes me sick to my stomach. The fear and sadness those poor children must feel, and the abuse they will suffer is horrendous.
