Female students are being injected now with date rape drugs in nightclubs

I won't post the Facebook post I saw because its on a forum but apparently there have been several reported incidents of students in Exeter nightclubs being injected in the back (not by people they are with) while out. The newspapers really need to get on this story and nightclubs who are reportedly batting back complaints saying that the women are just drunk need to deal with this criminality on their premises. We are not prey. Angry

Bravo- its unbelievable. I would like to remove myself from it. I only posted yesterday for the first time ( which I got a rude comment about) because ‘first time posters are linked to urban myths.
How can i delete my account so I don’t see this ever again.

I didn’t join to give credence to a rumour. I joined to give credence to the facts.
I am just surprised that these comments are on a mumsnet feminist thread!
So I am done. I accept my very bad judgement and you people can get on with it - meanwhile I have an actual life to get on with and this is not for me!

Channel 4 news covered the story tonight. It's not a myth.

Oh? They confirmed with toxicology reports and CCTV then? Or has someone been charged with this?
MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 20/10/2021 20:02

They are covering the fact that some women believe they have been injected. No one is disputing that.

One woman on C4 found an apparent injection site in her hand. Someone may have assaulted her with a needle, but the hand would be the most ridiculous choice for anyone trying to inject a sedative - it's about the most painful place you can give a large volume injection and it would take ages.

And this rather unclear image is meant to prove what exactly?

This is the image of the same ring and my friends daughters arm! Good to see that awareness is is being raised. The family are in shock about what's happened and have to wait 6 months for the hepatitis results so cannot test until then. It's awful!

Mayorquimby2 · 20/10/2021 21:12

Tbf she's asked to be briefed on something which seems to be getting a lot of traction and if true is absolutely horrific.
She hasn't confirmed anything and the other experts they've gone to for comment haven't exactly confirmed the concerns as being accurate.

"Sarah Crew, temporary chief constable for Avon and Somerset Police, who leads the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s work on adult sexual offences, told the Commons Home Affairs Committee that it was “difficult to make an assessment” on the prevalence of spiking by injection, but added that there was “a problem” of drink spiking.

Prof Fiona Measham, chair of criminology at Liverpool university and director of the Loop, a drug-testing organisation said the discussions around safety in nightclubs could be a “Me Too movement” for the industry.

Measham urged caution until more evidence was gathered about the prevalence of injection spiking. “We know from research that there is a very low incidence of [drink] spiking, and we’d imagine therefore, the risk is even lower of spiking by injection."

ElvisPresleyHadABaby · 20/10/2021 21:24

The most important thing is safety. The boycott is making my girls SEE the widespread condemnation of rape culture, which is heartening. Glad it is being investigated properly, and that there is calling for more stringent security measures in clubs.

That ring is supposed to mark girls out as injected and dazed, to a stranger waiting outside in the dark..?
Really?

Because it looks totally indistinguishable from any other silver ring unless it’s examined reeeeeally closely

But of course the ‘scruffy stranger’ would be able to spot it a mile off and pick up her victim

Honestly, every post supposedly ‘proving’ the plot just makes it more and more implausible Confused

PermanentTemporary · 20/10/2021 23:14

I thought it looked like a plumber's compression ring...

Women being harassed and the subject of sexual fetishes and attacks - real and I believe them. A picture of AN Other ring means 0. And where's the arm?

Mayorquimby2 · 20/10/2021 23:49

And the notion that they'd also put a vague sinister message on the ring as a calling card in an act of sadistic hubris is just utter nonsense.

The incidents of spiking by injection that have been reported to the police may be real, but that embellishment is not.

MsMoody · 21/10/2021 00:00

Interesting article from Snopes about how anxieties about the state of the world drive the creation of urban myths: www.snopes.com/news/2019/10/24/halloween-dangerous-holiday/

Seems to me like this is the perfect encapsulation of our anxiety around being out in busy spaces at the moment plus heightened fear for women’s safety in recent months.

Kinneddar · 21/10/2021 00:05

But the basis of this situation is NOT an urban myth. People ARE being injected. The other aspects may be embellishments but please don't overlook the fact this is a real thing

PermanentTemporary · 21/10/2021 06:08

Yes Kineddar. And what a horrible thing to happen to anyone.

Bagelsandbrie · 21/10/2021 07:25

All over Good Morning Britain this morning.

Fetarabbit · 21/10/2021 07:28

I believe them, knowing how little many nightclubs take women's safety and how low some men will stoop to exert power or worse over women this does not seem overly out there, sadly. Its scary.

Are they though? With what?

We’ve had several posters explain why it’s just not biologically possible for someone to have the reaction they are claiming after an intramuscular injection, others claiming that there is no way someone could be randomly injected in the hand and as yet, no actual evidence it’s any more than a needle stick (or drawing pin or any other spiky object) stick ‘prank’

With all the will in the world, a slightly pissed person won’t know the difference between them being injected (ie a liquid pushed into them via a needle) vs being stuck with a needle so the only person that can say anyone has been injected is a doctor with a tox report in front of them
And so far, there have been zero of those

Fiddie · 21/10/2021 08:02

The reports I read in the papers all say the police are investigating, and all the medical people are saying things like the needle would need to be thick to get enough injected intramuscularly in a few seconds to have any affect. They also said it would stay in their blood steam for a good few days so will be easy to check

I would believe it if I knew someone personally but things like a cry baby ring remind me of the stories when I was a teen.
