Is anyone else looking at Afghanistan?

I'm unhappy about the abandonment of these women in Afghanistan. Johnson's speech is the usual male-centred self-justificatory claptrap. Freedom, justice, equality and even terrorism - all of it only means anything when men or money are involved. These women deserve freedom from the Taliban, and support to find it.

I can’t imagine how harrowing it is all over there. Sad I’m grateful someone is trying to make a difference. Flowers

sergeilavrov such sad updates. Please stay safe. Thank you for all you are doing. I am sending you strength and best wishes Flowers

DateLoaf · 19/08/2021 23:07

Dear God. This is atrocious.

Why was sergeilavrov’s comment deleted?

FlorisFigure "Why was sergeilavrov’s comment deleted?"

Yes - and the helpful list of charities supporting refugees that she shared?

charliebrown59 · 20/08/2021 08:29

That's worrying.

FlorisFigure · 20/08/2021 08:33

I took screen shots of the lists as I am working in my local area to assist refugee families. In case anyone is interested, the city councils have many procedures and support networks already in place, I’m working towards organising specific donations of needed (rather than offered) items.

Anyway, test photo. Can anyone read this?

FlorisFigure · 20/08/2021 08:36

Odd.

The number of photos I can post has been limited.

Is anyone else looking at Afghanistan?

I can see three photos: the first has 2 charities listed, the second one and the last 5.

I stumbled across this website somehow too: www.help-refugees-uk.service.gov.uk
You can click on a region, then a council to find what's needed in an area. It's not specifically for Afghanistan, but other refugees are out there.

@FlorisFigure

Why was sergeilavrov’s comment deleted?
TBH given the posters location and the sensitivity of what is going on on the ground I wouldn’t be completely surprised if somebody somewhere has had thoughts about the use of social media….

I certainly hope the deletion is down to something along those lines rather than anything more sinister.

I still can't get my head around what has happened. How the fuck can the US and UK walk away from these human beings. Its actually made me sick to the stomach some of the reports I'm seeing.

That little girl that was beaten in the face with a whip..how can the soldiers stand by and watch this. I too am ashamed at the UK. This isn't the first report of the UK soldiers doing nothing. There was marine on TV the other night thats actually in Kabul and he is furious that the UK army are not helping them in because they were told to do so.

notimagain · 20/08/2021 13:33

My twopence worth is I suspect an agreement has been reached with those running the local branch of the Taliban. As a result it is more than possible US/US soldiers will have been throughly briefed as to when they can and cannot intervene, most especially in events outside the UK/US area of control, which doesn’t appear (speculation) to extend beyond the airport wire/airport gates.

It’s something that used to be, might still be, called Rules of Engagement (ROE), yes they often suck, but as far as current events go the Taliban really can turn this evacuation off very quickly.

Akire · 20/08/2021 13:53

No one wants full scale riot or gun fight so there are incidents they are going to
Ignore. It’s so hostile situation it could turn in a moment. Horrible as it was life wasn’t at risk and even if was has to balanced against whole crowd. Need judgment of Solomon

FlorisFigure · 20/08/2021 13:55

My post was deleted…..

Wow - thanks MNHQ. Are we not allowed to say the I word?

Ceara · 21/08/2021 14:38

Thanks @FlorisFigure
I can't believe, after someone makes the time in all that chaos and stress, to share a list signposting relevant charities, that MNHQ promptly deletes it.
Then deletes one of your screenshots of it as well!

Dave20 · 21/08/2021 18:11

With regards to soldiers standing and watching, I’m sure there’s very strict protocol in what they can and can’t do, plus there will be some sort of truce between the military and Taliban.
The UK and US are also outnumbered by the Taliban, it could all go horribly wrong at any moment.
It’s the US that wanted to withdraw, the mission was led by then following 911.
The UK can’t do it alone, not enough resources.

Akire · 21/08/2021 18:24

I can’t see how get more out now. Saying only 1000 last 24h. If it’s 10 days to go and we have 8000 soldiers on ground that’s days and days worth of flights for them.

After watching much more I do now understand how much is Americans fault when could have been getting Afghan who work with them and families out over last month rather than announce it and melt down straight away.

notimagain · 21/08/2021 18:52

I don’t think we are at that point yet.

What appears to be constraining numbers per day is people (civilians) getting into the airport and then whatever processing is needed…..however for various reasons I suspect aircraft need to be turned fairly quickly and got out of Kabul. I suspect that’s why you are seeing pictures/hearing stories of lightly loaded flights and as a result low daily numbers for civilians getting out.

OTOH in terms of getting troops out it will probably be a completely different process - they’ll just jump on when told so potentially they’ll be getting bums on seats (or more likely hard floors) far more rapidly.

Big complication might be the extraction of some kit which will take up volume, and all bets are off if the Taliban decide to make life difficult.

I have to say at some point it may become obvious that no more civvies are getting out and that will be horrible, but I don’t think we are at that point right now.

charliebrown59 · 21/08/2021 19:50

Just seeing the Ruffini tweet that some flights containing children of all ages without their parents, so bloody awful.

The situation is looking horribly precarious, I'm sure most of us trying to get out would do the same and send our kids first if possible.

FlorisFigure · 21/08/2021 19:57

My local council put out a call for donations etc and then have announced they are bringing in two families. Two. Shameful.

FlorisFigure · 21/08/2021 20:01

And my MP is having a meltdown on social media and is desperately trying to get more women and children out. I’m not a fan of her voting record but she has stepped up passionately about Afghanistan. I hope she can make a difference. I keep looking on Flightradar24 and I can only see U.S. planes (there’s one at the airport now). Are they the only ones allowed there n

notimagain · 21/08/2021 20:34

There have been RAF C130s, C17s and A400 in and out of Kabul over the last few days (also other nationalities aircraft) but US have by far the biggest airlift capacity so chances are if you look at the flight tracking sites most of the aircraft will be US.

In fact as I type (2035 UK time) I’ve just looked and there’s a RAF A400 well to the southwest of Kabul just about to leave Afghan airspace, entering Pakistan- presumably heading for one of the Gulf airfields.
