Is anyone else looking at Afghanistan?

I'm unhappy about the abandonment of these women in Afghanistan. Johnson's speech is the usual male-centred self-justificatory claptrap. Freedom, justice, equality and even terrorism - all of it only means anything when men or money are involved. These women deserve freedom from the Taliban, and support to find it.

I’ve been thinking that at least some of that western training has sunk in, they now know PR and media manipulation. They’ll not be able to keep up that facade though if there’s no substance behind it. Twitter should come in useful. How will our politicians react then? Probably sell out a bit more.

I hope Priti Patel will retain a balanced approach. We do have to remain aware that some of those men pushing themselves on to planes ahead of women and children will have done so deliberately as products of a misogynistic culture and will not necessarily turn into model gentlemen once here. They’ll have to be judged as individuals under the law as for us all.

Refugees are arriving as of today, so if there are any local charities near you that work with your local council to support refugees they might be able to take donations and use them here to help families new to the UK.
No idea on numbers - just glad to hear stories trickling through that some folk are in a safer place today.

Those poor women.

Greer was right.

And, those of us in the West who believe that our rights are secure are deluded.

Some friends have been involved with settling Syrian refugees in this country. It has not been easy - there is a certain amount of hostility - so I am really not sure that Afghans will be welcomed.

Do we accept everyone who wants to come from all Sharia law countries? From all countries that treat women poorly? From all countries that aren't democracies? That's a lot of people. They will need housing and medical care and translators.

If you think further about your statement, should we have wholly refused refuge to Jews fleeing the Nazis? Many of those fleeing will not espouse the values of the Taliban, so we should not discriminate on those grounds.

Many also will have skills which we could use. I read yesterday of the British soldier who set up an animal shelter - he wants to get his staff out, some of whom are vets that he trained. We have a shortage of vets in the UK - so with suitable vetting some of those fleeing Afghanistan could be employed here and would probably be glad to do so.

This is not a normal situation, not a normal refugee crisis. This is the result of U.K. complicity in typical US gung-ho game playing somewhere where they never bothered to learn about the local area and impacts of their actions. From arming the Taliban originally against the soviets, who at least had a land border with the place, to this total clusterfuck of a withdrawal.

I don’t like loads of single men from misogynistic traditions turning up here either, but this is different. We have an obligation.

U.K. says fwiw that they’re going to prioritise women and children.

The direct result. To be fair, some of the migration crisis is the result of past actions elsewhere, although very long past in some cases, and of course climate change. We are already over populated though. I hope our useless leaders and mindless upper classes who caused all of it are proud.

I think over population is relatively regional.
There's a thread elsewhere on this, but when this was my work, most refugees were housed privately and there is plenty of housing in my area. The home office funding from the scheme paid for the costs of it.

@NonnyMouse1337 I saw that, powerful stuff.

FlorisFigure · 18/08/2021 21:08

There is a video on Twitter with a family being turned back from the airport as they are not on the list. The son looks like my son. He is crying. My heart is breaking.

colouringindoors · 18/08/2021 23:50

I've seen video of mothers trying to give their babies to soldiers, over the razor wire. OMG 😪😪😪

Talking of which, I don't know how journalists are still there either.

USA: Utter Selfish A….

Thank you @sergeilavrov. This is a very useful document.

notimagain · 19/08/2021 07:01

@sergeilavrov

Thanks for taking time to respond.

I see overnight some sources (including Reuters) are saying the FAA will allow US carriers to partake in the evacuation with DOD permission.

I guess that means they a bit more comfortable about the threat to aviation (or have been heavily leant on by politician in Washington) but from what you’ve observed it won’t be much help if people can’t get to/into the airport.

Good Luck, stay safe.

FedNlanders · 19/08/2021 08:11

I saw a video of babies being lifted to the wire in desperation. Heartbreaking.

Lawrie Bristow sounds like a bit of a brave man. I do not know much about him, but why couldn't he have been our PM instead of that buffon, Boris.

I totally agree. They really are not. We are always only a step away from the same situation.
charliebrown59 · 19/08/2021 16:02

It's absolutely obvious that the taliban whilst still tolerating western journalists are blocking access to the airport. Dismal.
