Noel Clarke sexual harassment allegations, suspended by BAFTA

🤬🤬🤬

Especially galling that BAFTA was seemingly made aware of this before giving him his very recent honour. I watched his acceptance speech and found it really moving in terms of celebrating a working class black man’s success in a historically white industry. Turns out he’s an (alleged) sexual abuser. Fucking great.

@Pinkearedcow

I believe you Queenofbeebers
Me too.
TheWeeDonkey · 30/04/2021 20:47

Oh he's gone for the "seeking professional help" angle

Didn't Weinstein do the same thing?

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 30/04/2021 20:49

I'd love to see what type of professional help is required to not do naked auditions with young female actors. Normal people don't require professional help to know that is fucking wrong.

Why does he feel the need to seek professional help if he hasnt done any "wrong doing" or "sexual misconduct"?

Clarke will undergo sensitivity training and make a donation to some sort of female-related cause as a way of showing regret.

His actions have been misinterpreted and he's sorry he might have made some women uncomfortable. He's rilly rilly sorry because he has always centred diversity and inclusion (but not equality) in his work.

/sarcasm

@Nightbear

’I vehemently deny any sexual misconduct or criminal wrongdoing. Recent reports however have made it clear to me that some of my actions have affected people in ways I did not intend or realise. To those individuals, I am deeply sorry. I will be seeking professional help to educate myself and change for the better. ‘

Sorry, not sorry.

Didn't he expose his penis in a car? I'm sure indecent exposure is a crime.
Shehasadiamondinthesky · 30/04/2021 20:54

I just saw this on sky news and I cannot believe he is trying to tell us he is sorry and is seeking professional help yet in the next breath says, ""I vehemently deny any sexual misconduct or criminal wrongdoing," he said."
What he actually means is I'm very very sorry for myself that I've been called out by those angry bitches and I'm seeking help for my battered ego.

bonfireheart · 30/04/2021 20:55

But the award was for outstanding contribution and I'm pretty sure voted for by Bafta themselves (and the very people who knew about the allegations) not the public.

I'm sorry for the things I didn't do

Most sexual harassment at work doesn’t meet a threshold for criminal conviction. It’s still wrong. If twenty women in my workplace made allegations like this against our CEO he would be out and would likely never work again in our sector.

The next step is usually joining a religion.

That's an excellent point and helped to clarify my thinking.

Thank you.

RUOKHon · 30/04/2021 21:03

We know that in this country one woman is murdered by a partner or ex partner every four days.

We know that 97% of all women have experienced some sort of sexual harassment, or worse, from men.

Today, there was a study published that found out of more than 22,000 women, over half had been raped by their partner.

At least twenty women have independently come forward about being sexually abused and bullied by NC, and one of the biggest newspapers in the country has spoken to sources who can corroborate their reports.

And yet somehow, because a vanishingly rare 1-2% of rape/sexual assault allegations are false, this thread has turned into an apology for all those perpetrators, because God Forbid we forget to centre the feelings of the Poor Menz and focus on the thousands and thousands of female victims instead.

FUCK. OFF.

PatriciaCarmichael · 30/04/2021 21:04

@AlfonsoTheTerrible it wasn’t one of the nominated awards with a public shortlist.

southeastdweller · 30/04/2021 21:06

BAFTA's decision to give him that award in the first place was ridiculous and probably due to them wanting to be seen as inclusive. Outstanding British contribution to cinema? He's hardly John Hurt or Mike Leigh (two previous recipients).

Sweetaddiction88 · 30/04/2021 21:08

I understand why they cancelled the last episode of his show however I think it is unfair to the other actors who were on it, also to the viewers.

MorganKitten · 30/04/2021 21:08

I’ve worked with him several times.
We did a lot of his premiers and press, always very nice.
I actual worked on a film with him, my friend directed it, and he spent more time telling us all about his kids than anything else. So to a shame to hear about this.

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 30/04/2021 21:08

It doesn't matter. What matters is that Clarke won the vote.

Results are tallied and recorded by an outside professional firm. If Clarke had not received the award the firm would have had to report this as an irregularity to the relevant professional body and the award given to Clarke as the rightful recipient.

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 30/04/2021 21:10

BAFTA management are a tiny subset of BAFTA members, who vote on a variety of categories.

I didn't claim it was.

Iflyaway · 30/04/2021 21:14

Britain's Harvey Weinstein.

All I can say it's good it's all coming into the light.

Queenofbeebers · 30/04/2021 21:15

His Twitter feed was showing everyone who he was a long time ago.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 30/04/2021 21:17

Ffs his statement is so cliche in its insincerity.

It's essentially "I didn't do it but if you thought I did I can understand why you're angry. I didn't though. I'll go to therapy to work out why my entirely normal behaviour could have been construed by more than twenty women as sexual harassment. Even though it wasn't. Because I love women. How could I not? My mums one."

God I hate all this. Ugh.

Pinkdormobile · 30/04/2021 21:19

My point is why not wait until something gets to court and a legal decision is made. You realise that innocent men have committed suicide due to false allegations

Because of the near impossibility of guilty verdicts in rape cases, let alone harassment and molestation.

You do realise that innocent women who've been raped have committed suicide due to not being believed or because of the treatment they have received in court?

Have you heard of he said, she said? Have you worked with women who've been raped and gone through a court case where the man's been found not guilty because his friends and family have lied about it? There are many, many more women whose lives have been ruined by being raped than men whose lives have been ruined by false allegations.

The case of Christopher Jeffries was appalling but was the tabloid press casting aspersions with no evidence whatsoever and no one actually coming forward to say he'd done anything to hurt anyone. This is an entirely different situation with a number of similar accusations, with credible evidence. This is not a case of no smoke without fire.

Suggests he only treats women this way when he views them as being more junior / on his payroll therefore less likely to speak up due to the fear of the consequences. Bleurgh.
weewitch · 30/04/2021 21:19

Those tweets are horrendous - I actually had to stop reading them. I can't believe he continued to work after just a few of those tweets and if he's happy to tweet that publicly, goodness only knows what he's like in private.
