Medication for my mental health made me super morbidly obese

Attempted suicide aged 13. Been overweight from early childhood and been picked on and singled out since then. Been prescribed the following over the last 15 years: citalopram, mirtazapine, fluoxetine, sertraline, paroxetine, olanzapine, aripiprazole. In the last 15 years, I've gone from overweight to super morbidly obese and weigh over 26 stone. Even if I only eat one meal a day, I still end up putting on more weight. Can't walk even short distances anymore without getting out of breath. Used to walk everywhere. Ankles are swollen most of the time and have left pelvic and left hip pain. About ten years ago, I lost some of the weight on Slimming World but losing the weight feels impossible now. Been voluntarily admitted into a psychiatric hospital once and been sectioned once as well. Never got proper help as all they're worried about is bed space. Lost all motivation to do basic things like brush my teeth and shower daily. Struggle with consistency, but when no-one has ever been there for you in life day to day, then how do you learn to show up for yourself? Might as well be dead as I'm barely living now.

I totally understand. I was a little overweight but then my MH plummeted. I’ve put in about 5 stone and am morbidly obese. The meds keep me alive and help mentally but in the meantime my physical health declines rapidly. Are you eligible for nhs weight loss meds? I’m not as I’m not diabetic. It’s soul destroying.

Not eligible for weight loss injections and cannot access Mounjaro or Wegovy privately. Been referred to an out of area hospital with a Bariatric department but the waiting list is very long. In the meantime I'm dying inside.

I’m so sorry, it’s truly difficult. Is there a wellbeing person at your gp surgery who might have some ideas? They sometimes have access to free gym passes for example. I can’t access that as I don’t leave the house but they might have some ideas for you?

Hello OP, we are really sorry to hear you are feeling this way.

We hope you don't mind, but when these threads are flagged up to us we usually add a link to our Mental Health resources. You can also go to the Samaritans website.

Support from other Mumsnetters is great and we really hope you will be able to take some comfort from your fellow posters, but as other MNers will tell you, it's really a good idea to seek RL help and support as well.

We also like to remind everyone that, although we're awed daily by the astonishing support our members give each other through life's trickier twists and turns, we'd always caution anyone never to give more of themselves to another poster, emotionally or financially, than they can afford to spare.

With warm wishes,
MNHQ💐
