Best anti anxiety med that changed your life

Evening

My anxiety is crushing me. I’m having therapy but lady suggested trying anti depressants again which I swore at one time I wouldn’t after having a bad time with them.

I’ve tried several citalopram, done nothing for mood after 5 months stopped. Sertraline, wasn’t on them long enough tbh. Fluxotine made me very suicidal and then Venlafaxine. No never ever again.

Thinking of Escitalopram maybe. Going to ring GP tomorrow.

Tell me what helped you? My anxious thoughts are ruining my life

Hi OP
I found that mirtazapine helped me the most.
I started on 15mg and gradually worked my way up to 45mg at night.

It also helps me to sleep.

Covidwoes · 08/11/2023 22:09

Venlafaxine for me OP, but I see it didn't work for you. Sorry to hear that. Hope someone comes along with some useful suggestions.

Ilovewheelychairs · 08/11/2023 22:10

Escitalopram for me. Tried Citalopram, Sertraline, Fluoxetine, Venlafaxine and had been on Quetiapine. Escitalopram was the one that has worked and has given me my life back. Best of luck with it; finding the right medication is awful and takes so long, but it is worth it when you find the right one and realise how much better your life is!

lookingforsunrise · 08/11/2023 22:12

Mirtazapine and beta blockers (propranolol). Stops the physical anxiety, which is a huge help.

Willowcat77 · 08/11/2023 22:13

I find Pregabalin very useful. It significantly dulls my anxiety and helps me sleep. Also helps with nerve pain.

TheShellBeach · 08/11/2023 22:18

Actually I also take gabapentin. I'd forgotten that lol.
It's a good mood stabiliser.

GrandTheftAutumn · 08/11/2023 22:21

Fluoxetine and Pregablin combo is a game changer for me! Hope you're okay ❤️

Olivia199 · 08/11/2023 22:29

Mirtazipine was amazing but gave me restless legs. I'd tried all that you had and felt so lost with it all. Then I tried trazadone in a last effort and it was absolutely my miracle drug. I would hesitate for a second if I needed it again.
I slept. I ate. I didn't feel numb, I just felt .. normal. It was perfect. There will be one that works for you, as hard as it is - just try and keep going.

applepiencustarts · 08/11/2023 22:35

Have you tried natural remedies or supplements? Exercise, clean balanced diet, magnesium, vitamin D, B vits, Ashwagandha, Magnolia Rhodiola, L-Theanine, omega 3, ginkgo biloba...

anonimoxyz · 08/11/2023 23:00

Propranolol. Doesn't stop the thoughts but no physical symptoms

LightSpeeds · 08/11/2023 23:06

Fluoxetine did it for me. I was literally like a new person within a week of starting it, after 3 years of moderate to severe anxiety.

I see that you've also tried Fluoxetine so I'm sorry that didn't work for you.

I have Generalised Anxiety Disorder and have been on a few antidepressants along with CBT therapy.

I can honestly say they best thing for me has been CBD oil. I have a day time one I take in the morning then again mid afternoon, then one that I take at bedtime. It really does just take the edge off. I have propranolol if I know I have a worse day than normal ahead of me and that works on stopping the panic attack symptoms.

Do you have any recs please?

TFZ9287 · 09/11/2023 00:29

I know you have already tried it but Citalopram is what has worked for me

Lizzieregina · 09/11/2023 00:33

My son has severe anxiety/panic disorder and Duloxetine has been good for him.

hoobanoobie · 09/11/2023 00:34

Amitriptyline and Propranolol. Side effect of the propranolol is excessive sweating though.
I used to get on very well with Mirtazapine, helped me sleep too, until I gained a ridiculous amount of weight while still only eating one small meal a day, as I've done for years. I came off it for that reason around 8 months ago and it's still a battle to shift this ridiculous excess weight, eating very little.
I use this propranolol sparingly now because of the sweating. The Amitriptyline helps me sleep too.

Me too, none of which worked, I can't remember all of them now but the only one that has worked for me and given me my life back is Citalopram. I've been on it 12 years now and have no intention of ever stopping. Sorry it didn't work out for you OP. Unfortunately it's not a logical application, it's trial and error. Add in early side effects while they bed in and it's tough. Citalopram was awful for the first 3 months but I am so glad I stuck with it. I hope you find one that works for you.

Blueeveryday · 09/11/2023 08:11

@TheShellBeach did u gain much weight on it? Never heard of gabapentin. must check it out. I need to even out my moods, my anxiety and panic is desperately bad.

@Covidwoes i know a few it worked greatly for, sadly not for me though. I am so worried sometimes there is nothing suited to me out there. I seem very sensitive to them.

@Ilovewheelychairs do you mind if I private mail you if I figure out how, your story seems very like mine. I’m extremely anxious(nothing new there) about taking medication again. But would like how the others affected you

Blueeveryday · 09/11/2023 08:19

@lookingforsunrise did u gain much weight on Mirtazapine? I know it should be least of my worries. I take propranolol also. Though I don’t find it that useless. Maybe I’m not using it the correct way.

I never thought i would consider any anti depressants again but my therapist begged me too. And she’s right. They both go hand in hand. It did for her at a time. The way my head is at the mo isn’t right. I’m sick. But scared.

I gained weight, but I'd also just given up smoking.

Hi @EmmaEmerald
This is the brand I use. Actually seen it recommend on a random thread on here. Bought the "taster pack" thing to give it a try. Havent looked back since. What made me think omg this is working was when after a few days I popped into the supermarket for a couple of bits and realised half way round that I hadnt reacted how I would usually do. Wasnt feeling like a panic attack was just around the corner. Actually came out and cried in the car 😂
