Hi all

So I feel stupid about this but yesterday we went to the farm. Was sitting colouring with the kids, another parent sat next to me. They were using felt tips and us glittery gel pens and not even colouring the same design - hang on it matters!

So sitting there colouring and heard
Woman: everytime I'm using a colour she picks up the same one - I had no idea what she was using as I was with the gel pens
Teenage son: it's because she's copying you
Woman: she can't colour as fast as me though
Teenage son: yeah your deffo better than that
Woman: least I'm using crayola - does it matter ffs?

NOW I would usually have said something but peacefully with the kids colouring I didn't want to make an argument so said nothing but when I saw DH later I told him. I said there are so many colours in the rainbow like why does it matter? DH said that's how bullies are made from parents like that. But why? Over a colouring sheet? DH just said she's jealous because as a family we are well turned out, the kids always have their hair done and everything but that's my personal choice. My friend doesn't brush her daughters hair and I'll laugh with her when she says oh it looks like a birds nest on her head. If that's what she wants to do then fine. We all parent differently there's no right or wrong. But it bugged me she said as I was in a proper happy retro mode with those gel pens and she said that. And as well to a child, why? Just makes me feel shit as I wasn't copying her and there is limited colours in the world. So what if I chose pink if she was using it?

Was the woman your friend or a random woman?

Littlethingsmeanalot · 05/04/2023 08:24

Um what. Was she a friend or a random?

DanceMonster · 05/04/2023 08:27

A woman was colouring in with her teenage son at a farm and they were annoyed at you ‘copying’ them? One of the weirder things I’ve read on here TBH.

TheressomethingaboutHank · 05/04/2023 08:32

She was trying to wind you up. Your husband is right. Some people just Decide they don’t like the look of another and behave passive aggressively. Or openly aggressive with alcohol, etc.

At least you won’t see her again.

DanceMonster · 05/04/2023 08:35

I just can’t imagine an adult getting annoyed at someone copying their colouring 😂.

TiedUpWithABlackVelvetBand · 05/04/2023 08:37

I would really chalk this up to ‘one of those things’, and then move on with life.

sharingiscaringnow · 05/04/2023 08:44

It sounds like they might have had some kind of additional needs.

It's nothing to do with you, or your children's hair (couldn't follow that part, sorry).

It does sound very hurtful but just categorise it very much as a them problem and move on.

I noticed this is in mental health, are you currently struggling?

TheressomethingaboutHank · 05/04/2023 09:03

Also Well Done for not saying anything and realising that your children would much prefer to continue colouring quietly than witness an argument.

Almost always it’s better to walk away.

wowmummy · 05/04/2023 09:15

No she was random

It just got me overthinking and a bit self conscious

I think part of the problem - this is what I was trying to say with my daughters hair, is we are a well turned out family and that gives an impression (seeing as she hadn't even spoke to me) and then people want to put you down however I don't see us as any better/worse than anyone else. If she had spoken to me she would have heard that I am no posh speaking tart 😂😂😂

So someone was mean about your colouring because you brushed your daughters hair 😅😂

Clearly some people can 🤣

AppleCrumbleIceCreamDream · 05/04/2023 09:46

You're a well turned out family 🙄

BrutusMcDogface · 05/04/2023 09:47

Nothing to do with you being “a well turned out family”. 🤨 She was just a twat. Ignore.

AndTheSurveySays · 05/04/2023 09:49

I'd have assumed they both had some type of special needs tbh. Even if they don't, it's just so completely batshit that I wouldn't care.

Yeah, we’re a ‘well turned out family’ (I think) and this has never happened to me!

I'm confused by all of your post.

Take a deep breath and move on OP.

I can't picture what you might have done to your daughter's hair that would give other people the impression that you might be better than them, though?

StopFeckingFaffing · 05/04/2023 10:41

Very strange that this woman and her DC were discussing your colouring within earshot, they sound a bit unhinged although it could be some silly joke between the 2 of them and some people seem unaware how easily their conversations can be overheard by others

I'm stighly confused by your assumption that how 'well turned out' you are had anything to do with it!?

YABU to read so much into it

wowmummy · 05/04/2023 10:47

It depends on your definition of well turned out then but she said it within ear shot as a dig at me just to be an twat

Just pissed me off that
A) we were at a farm doing some colouring and B) she was talking to her teenage son like that??! Why? Have they got nothing better to talk about than the colour of my gel pen I'm using to colour the bow on an Easter egg picture

What is your definition of ‘well turned out’?
I get that it was annoyed and rude but a) I doubt it’s anything to do with how well dressed you are and b) she was talking about colouring sheets at a farm. It’s irrelevant. It doesn’t matter.

Maybe they were making trying to engage you in banter ?
I'm sure the way you looked had nothing to do with it . Don't over think minor conversations like this
