The crisis team have just left, after 'encouraging' me to take my antipsychotics...why has it come to this?

Hi SnowyMouse. If you feel up to it, could you say a bit more about what has happened. It sounds a tough day. What do you think you will do?

SnowyMouse · 18/01/2022 18:50

I'm at wit's end. The voices are telling me to do things to myself. I can't see how things can get any better.

I'm so sorry for the gap in replying. That sounds really scary and exhausting for you. Are the voices still insisting that you do something to yourself.

Wolfiefan · 18/01/2022 21:09

The anti psychotics will help make things better. You need to engage with the crisis team my lovely. Support here too if you need it. Flowers

dangermouseisace · 18/01/2022 21:13

The voices should F off SnowyMouse How dare they. Things can and will get better. This crisis right now is a temporary situation. Have you been encouraged enough to actually take the medication?

SnowyMouse · 19/01/2022 14:35

Thanks for all the support. They made me take it while they watched. I only just managed to take it.

Wolfiefan · 19/01/2022 14:39

But you did and that’s great. How are you doing today?

fantasmasgoria1 · 19/01/2022 15:00

I take mine because they do help somewhat. My sibling has schizophrenia and the antipsychotics help them quite a lot in terms of both visual and auditory hallucinations.

SnowyMouse · 19/01/2022 16:00

I'm struggling today, I know the meds help but the voices are saying not to take them.

OP posts:
Tal45 · 19/01/2022 16:22

Are you able to go against the voices and do what you know is best for you SnowyMouse? Do you have any strategies to deal with this sort of situation?

Can you think of these voices as a reflection of your inner thoughts, perhaps you aren't sure about taking the medication because you feel over whelmed, you are afraid of side effects or it seems scary and the voices are a reflection of that and that is why they are telling you not to take it. Can you talk to the voices? Can you reassure them that it is scary taking the meds for whatever reason and you understand that they are anxious but that they are to help you feel better so it is important that you do take them? Can you see these voices as your inner fears expressing themselves, rather than as separate beings that need to be listened to and obeyed?

SnowyMouse · 19/01/2022 16:43

The voices are external to me, they come from a specific place in relation to me. I try to fight them, but it doesn't always work.

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 19/01/2022 16:52

Distraction? What techniques help you?

Tal45 · 19/01/2022 16:53

Snowy mouse they might seem external but they are not, that is why only you can hear them. Instead of fighting them is it possible to work with them? Fighting them is like fighting yourself and must be completely exhausting. They are coming from within you, if you can work out what they are an indication of ie that you are over whelmed or that you are anxious about a situation or that you are feeling scared then maybe you can calm both yourself and the voices.

Inthesameboatatmo · 19/01/2022 17:00

You did really well yesterday hun ,you can do it again have you managed to take the medication today at all

SnowyMouse · 19/01/2022 19:42

It took 20 minutes to take all the meds, with 2 of them encouraging me. The psychiatrist said the voices are a product of my illness.

OP posts:
Possessionangst · 20/01/2022 14:22

What do you think about what the psychiatrist said?

SnowyMouse · 20/01/2022 15:22

I'm not sure exactly what he meant.

OP posts:
Copasetic · 20/01/2022 15:44

He meant that they are not actually there but appear so to you because you are unwell. It's a catch 22 situation where the voices caused by the illness tells you not to take the very medication that will make you better.

Copasetic · 20/01/2022 15:46

You did really well to take your medication and to fight it. If you keep doing it, it should get easier as the voices should diminish as the medication works.

mathanxiety · 20/01/2022 15:56

He meant that your brain has some chemical imbalance that is causing your neurons and synapses to malfunction a bit.

The medication will restore the balance. That is why he was encouraging you to take it.

I'm very glad you were able to.

labazslovesliving · 20/01/2022 16:16

you are on the right track taking your medication hard as it is but it is clear you still have issues. perhaps you need to have a talk with your specialist or nurse that the voices are causing you problems? they will know the best way to help you

SnowyMouse · 20/01/2022 19:31

I took half the meds tonight, they left eventually. My psych knows I'm struggling with voices at the moment, they are the ones that got the crisis team involved.

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 20/01/2022 19:45

You need all of them. You really do.

mathanxiety · 20/01/2022 20:13

Please take the rest of the meds you were asked to take tonight.

Tal45 · 20/01/2022 20:45

Remember that you took all the meds yesterday snowymouse and nothing bad happened. Do you have the meds? Can you take the rest today just like you did yesterday?

The psychiatrist meant that you are hearing the voices because of your illness. Your illness is causing them. Your illness stops you recognising the sound of your own inner voice and so your brain thinks it is someone else's voice.

The medicine will stop chemicals in your brain sending too many messages and this will help you feel calmer and the voices to go away or not be so noticeable.

Do you want the voices to go away snowymouse? The medicine will help make the voices go away so it is really good for you to take it if you do. It will take time to work though so it's really important that you keep taking it every day.
