Felt really low for the last two days! think my resolve is weakening! Does anyone Know if St Johns Wort works?!!

MummyToSteven · 26/11/2004 11:41

Hi MWNN.

Re:St John's Wort. I think there is some evidence that it can be helpful for minor depression. There has been a proper study done on it. I don't think it is reputed to be particularly helpful for anxiety/OCD. My personal view on SJW is that if you are feeling unwell enough to self-medicate, then it's best to bite the bullet and go to the GPs to discuss meds. I only took SJW for a few days - it gave me a really weird tic of having to rub my chin(!) - which was far more scary for me than any SSRI side effects I have experienced. Other thing I would say is be very careful about combining SJW with any other medication; it can often make things like the Pill less effective - so if you take anything else at all, check the interaction with your pharmacist.

I think that a couple of days is a little on the short side to be assuming a relapse - could be a hormonal/junk food related blip maybe, though of course no harm keeping a close eye on yourself. If you do go down the med-free route atm, then i would say be very careful about relaxation/stress reduction/me time/avoiding caffeine/eating well etc.

Having a better day today!! so hopefully it was a blip!! Just looking at options for the future really. thanks for advice. Not on the pill(took more permanent precautions after number 3!!)and tend to drink decaff most of the time anyhow.

mumwithnoname · 01/12/2004 13:34

had a really really crap weekend, and had decided to start the ads again but work up yesterday feeling ok and i feel ok today too!! Really really don't know what to do.I know it's negative but don't want to spoil Christmas for everyone by being depressed because I've not taken my pills but i don't want to take them if i don't need them. If I knew that each bad day was only a blip I think I'd cope but I tend to think the worst esp when i have a few together and if things get as bad as they were last year i think I'd rather die than go through it again. Friends at church are praying for me too and I don't want to let them down

EniDeepMidwinter · 01/12/2004 13:36

mwnm, fwiw it sounds like a blip. Why don't you see how you feel next Monday and think about it then?

mumwithnoname · 01/12/2004 15:54

may well do that!!!

MummyToSteven · 01/12/2004 17:32

agree with EniDMW - hopefully just a blip but keep an eye on it.

do you think it would be worth keeping some sort of diary - looking maybe at what you eat/drink, what sort of stresses you have had, and how that corresponds with your mood, to see if that helps you isolate what triggers your blips?

mumwithnoname · 01/12/2004 19:15

tried diaries before- get a bit obsessive about them and they tend to make me dwell on the negatives!!!(no pleasing some is there?!)

mumwithnoname · 02/12/2004 22:13

made a dicision- gonna start ads tomorrow- had really really c**p day. Felt out of it at work this morning, and just want to cry all the time. Can't do this again...Looks like my friends will have to give up on me!!!

mrschristmaswallace · 07/12/2004 21:48

hi, how are you? have you started taking them and do you feel any better?

mumwithnoname · 08/12/2004 16:12
