Seeing all these Feeling Low Posts makes me feel like screaming THAT'S LIFE

I'm sorry

I don't really read these threads

I do know that depression is a real illness and requires medical help and I do not wish to denigrate those who are suffering in this way

I cannot help thinking that a lot of these posts stem from expecting more from life than there really is. Some people just seem to want to feel good all the time, and the things that are getting you down are JUST LIFE

I think a lot of you do need to pull your socks up and stop analysing things. just get on with your lives and make the best of it

God forbid you had something proper to worry about - like war, disease, famine

Don't seem to see many of the mothers from the SN board posting here nor those who I do see as having real problems to worry about.

oh for gods sakes, i know people with depression, i was just mentioning that perhaps my positive outlook is why i cant see why people have got so upset. I mean perhaps if i was depressed i would be upset too. Don't start having a go at me now for not caring about people who are down. It is getting really annoying.

How do you know whizzymum that she never needs a few words of encouragement?

clairabelle · 26/10/2004 00:13

FF all I am saying is .. actually I can't be bothered. Goodnight.

Caligula · 26/10/2004 00:14

Hercules, yes, that is debate. But it doesn't sound anything like RP's post!

miam · 26/10/2004 00:14

Yes hercules - perhaps that was what she meant. If it had put in that way there would have been no problems and a very interesting debate could have taken place.

hercules · 26/10/2004 00:14

That's what I mean. Does having a positive outlook affect your chances of depression? Are some people more surceptible to it?

but mental health issues are more than depression anyway - what about anxiety disorders - PTSD/OCD/Agoraphobia or eating disorders or addiction issues. it's simplistic to say - something awful happened to x, they didn't get depressed - they may not have clinical depression but could well have another recognised psychiatric condition

Depression is genetic. Well it is my family!

miam · 26/10/2004 00:16

Night Demented. Think I'm going to tear myself away too.

hercules · 26/10/2004 00:17

Yes, that's where the discussion comes in. Not insults! I know very little about depression even though my father suffered most of his life. He was a complete bastard with it as well. I always feared it would run in the family but so far no sign.

Caligula · 26/10/2004 00:17

Good night laydeez. Look forward to seeing the additional 500 comments in the morning.

blossomhill · 26/10/2004 00:18

Yes there is a very big difference between feeling low and depression. A BIG difference!

MummyToSteven · 26/10/2004 00:26

jenkel · 26/10/2004 00:35

Dont want to offend anybody, but just cant believe the outcry the original post has caused. Admittedly it was a bit insensitive and probably aimed at people who are feeling a little low. I am fortunate to have never suffered any form of depression, I have had tough times in my life, eating disorders, miscarriage, eptopic pregnancy and IVF to name but a few I feel that most people have had bad times, just some people are better at handling stressful situations than others. I do believe that depression is a terrible illness in some people. I have seen my Mum go through an awful patch after losing my dad to a very long painful illness and believe me who wouldnt be depressed after something terrible like that. But its also true to say that a lot of people say they are depressed when actually they are not, they just need attention for whatever reason. My SIL keeps saying she is suffering from depression, she isnt on any medication and she seems to function normally. The people that I have seen that have suffered from depression dont eat, dont sleep they just want to die. So I dont believe she is depressed. I'm sure whatever our situation at home, if we all went to a famine stricken country we would all be grateful for what we have at home. Dont want to offend anybody, I realise that this a sensitive place. Not sure why RP felt that she had to start this thread off, but I do believe in SOME of what she says. Just think it has all got out of context a little

MummyToSteven · 26/10/2004 01:01

jenkel - re:depression and eating habits

it is the change in eating habits that is symptomatic of depression - i.e. a change in appetite upwards OR downards. so people can be clinically depressed and overeat/comfort eat.

jenkel · 26/10/2004 08:08

I had a strange eating disorder, I would no way say i was anorexic, but whenever I ate I would be sick, just couldnt keep food down without being sick. Also wouldnt say I was depressed, just a mixed up teenage, lasted about 1 year and then sorted it self out. Dont wont to belittle eating disorders but just wish that would happen now, may help me to lose all this weight lol.

captainCOD · 26/10/2004 08:11

I think that you/we all owe the team an apology.

Th e suggestion that they deliberatley start threads like this is so untrue and hurtful for all the hard work they put int o making this a fun site.

wallawallabingbang · 26/10/2004 08:21

I'm with cod - havent had time to trawl through everything but think its v harsh to suggest these kind of posts are a ploy by the mumsnet team.

AuntyQuated · 26/10/2004 08:25

I didn't see that Coddy. I stayed clear after a little while as it seemed that everyone was lookig to blame someone!

But to suggest it was the team is just crazy.

fio2 · 26/10/2004 08:28

OMg what a weird thread, now it's mumsnet team who like to do a bit of trolling, weird thought!

WigWamBam · 26/10/2004 08:40

Only one or two posters suggested that it might be the MN team, and I got the feeling that it was said partly as a misguided joke. I certainly don't believe that it was the MN team and I don't think most of the posters here last night did either.
