Emetophobia - my worst nightmare

Ds1 goes to a school set on several different sites. Today one of the sites has been closed for deep cleaning due to norovirus wiping out hundreds of children this week. There are loads of siblings in ds1's building/class and 8 of his classmates were off today.

I am a single parent (really outing myself here!) and terrified of what feels completely inevitable right now. I was awake all night last night, waiting. Shall be doing the same again tonight.

You know, I feel like I have improved a lot with my emetophobia recently. I am no longer worried about the odd v. It's the awful, debilitating violence of noro that terrifies the life out of me.

The waiting is utter torture Sad

belgianbun does that mean some people are just naturally resistant to noro?

I've been doing the maths too, slightly comforting! It's still a v low proportion of the population.

Which school in N London is affected?

Is motilium the same as motilium 10 in the green box? Can docs prescribe stronger anti-emets just in case?

My ds is off school with coupe and has been since monday the nurse says its ok for him to go in if he seems ok but I don't really want to send him in incase he catches stomach bug before Xmas but even my dp says I should keep him off and he's not emet. I just don't want him to miss out on the Christmassy things. What's everyone else's views?

Badvocsanta · 19/12/2012 01:07

Saw bbc report earlier that made for interesting viewing...it was comparing noro outbreaks (that is confirmed cases in a lab) to previous years and acutely this year is not as bad as 09/10. It also stated that the outbreak could tail off, or not of course.
My ds2 has flu ATM and is very poorly and has been sick from coughing. I think some school closures are being wring my attributes to noro. There is such a huge viral load this year it's multiple causes I think.
Also, I remember that the past 2 years at least have reported noro outbreaks on cruise ships...we thought about going On a Cruise a couple of years back but then I read the travel reviews and sadly some of the reviewers had been caught in the outbreak...they said it was down to poor hygiene. They said staff were literally running after people who had just used the toilets to make them use anti bac gel!
I won't be going in a cruise any time soon :)

Badvocsanta · 19/12/2012 01:09

Stef...ds2 is ill and not going back in. Hernia missing his first nativity. Am hapeartbroken. But he is really not week enough.
Poor ds1 is very pale and tired too.
Am very tempted to keep him off too now. They are only doing free play and singing now anyway!
Will chat to him tomorrow and see what he thinks.

Badvocsanta · 19/12/2012 01:10

...and apparently I can't spell at this time if night.
I keep thinking of those poor families and kids in the USA and trying to tell myself how blessed I am and how silly this stupid phobia is....sigh. :(

stef06 · 19/12/2012 01:22

And it looks like I cannot spell at this time if night either lol probably because I'm on my phone!

Badvocsanta · 19/12/2012 01:28

Wrt to wether its noro or not, if you have to ask it isn't noro!!
Noro is vomiting and diahorrea with stomach cramps and temp.
You feel dreadful for 48 hours.
Last time I had it I didn't feel right for days.
You are very unlikely to get rotavirus as you will be pretty much immune now as an adult but it is a cause if v and d in kids (til they are immune)
I feel bad wrt ds2 too but he is just too ill to go.
Wrt ds1 I know ist partially my emet that is promoting me to keep in home, but also he is just so tired and pale.

stef06 · 19/12/2012 01:37

It was my partner that was ill and my son. Dp had d and v and stomach cramps. And who ever posted a link on here before I clicks on another bit and it says you can be contagious for upto 2 weeks :( I swear looking at these things makes me worse but I just can't help it :(

Badvocsanta · 19/12/2012 01:40

Pounds like your EP had noro.
Ime emetophobes are less likely to get noro as we are so gp careful with hand hygiene.
Whenever you read a post by an emet, what strikes me often is that it's been decades since they were sick.
For me it was 20 odd years (til I had kids!)

stef06 · 19/12/2012 01:43

He was only sick once but he slept it off I think, my son had stomach ache and was only sick twice and 12 hrs apart but he could have a strong immune system like me. I haven't been sick with a bug since I was a child! And my sons 5 and was sick for the first time 2 weeks ago

I've been actively avoiding the news for weeks as I dread this time of year . But I follow the daily telegraph on twitter (no longer now!!) , and last night they put a story about N in their twitter feed so of course I felt compelled to read it , resulting in a full blown freak out . Just wish i could hibernate until spring. Really wouldn't wish this on anyone :-( . Some of the posts are making me feel a bit better and I'm usually good at arguing with myself that not everyone gets it and its only a small proportion , but the news stories come along which may be rather exaggerated and it just scares me shitless .

Have now deleted all news based twitter feeds and am considering keeping off Facebook , although saying that no one on my Facebook has been ill at all, which is odd as usually people on my Facebook are (rather irritatingly) very vocal about illness , especially D&V.

Has anyone else got any coping strategies , should I consider getting some happy pills from the doctor or this motillium stuff?

Good luck everyone , I'm thinking of you all xxxx

Marne · 19/12/2012 07:57

Belgainbun-hope you are ok this morning?

We have all woken up with coughs and sore throats (dd1 has a head ache too), i have to send them to school as its the last production of the school play tonight and dd1 has an important part, have told her if she feels rough tomorrow but she will miss out saying goodbye to gher teacher who is leaving on friday. These next few days are going to be the worst and then the 72 hours wait to see if they come down with anything Sad.

I think i'm going to stay away from the news, i think most of it is blown out of proportion, there are always lots of tummy bugs this year, its good that they are forcing the hand washing issue but everything else is a bit OTT, look how they covered the swine flu thing a few years ago and not that many people actualy had it and it was not that bad (not as bad as normal flu).

Marne · 19/12/2012 10:45

Am panickng now Sad, feelng fluey, coughing, high temp and i look pale. Please please let it not be noro. I sent dd1 into school crying as she said she felt poorly (but she does this every week on PE day), my tummy is making horrid noises Sad, i got so much to do but now feel to anxious to move, dh is home and thinks i'm making a fuss. I want to curl up and sleep for a few days (wake up christmas day).

Badvocsanta · 19/12/2012 11:10

I Feel off too Marne, but am coughing up gunk so it's probably the start of what ds2 has.
Also my back has gone again - I have a herniated disc - so am in pain.
Just had some breakfast - a bit late! :)
I would recommend motillium tallula...I feel better knowing I have them in the house.
Marne...go to bed. Whatever it is can wait.
I really think rest and fluids is the only way to combat these awful viruses going around ATM x

Marne · 19/12/2012 11:40

I am hopng its just a cough/cold, only just got over the horrid flu thing but didn't have a cough with it, Dd1 is coughing too and its quite gunky (she's also sneezing a lot). Seems silly but i would be happy with a cold Smile.

I have just had a nice bath and going to try and have some lunch, cant go to bed as i am on call if dd1 is poorly and needs picking up plus i got to pick the dd's up later, feed them and then back to school for school play, i will be soooo pleased when all this christmas rubbish is over (school).

Thats good news Belgainbun, i would have thought it was not noro (whenever my dd's have had it they had been sick quite a few times and were poorly for 3 or 4 days).

I'm feeling a bit better now (less anxious), i have to take the dd's back to school in a bit for the last school play. 2 more days to go Grin.
