as an aside, this is also the reason whenever I hear someone who would like to be a therapist who isn't happy or prepared to do a lot of therapy themselves

They wouldn't get very far with the training or the job if they weren't prepared to have therapy.

It is an essential part of both.

For accredited therapy yes amberbut not for lots of counselling type jobs. I will spare you my relate counsellor story. I known its not the same type of basis but the principle of people being impartial still remains.

Some relate counsellors are working with relate to gain their practice hours. Some are doing relate training.

It is hard enough for a fully qualified, accredited with BACP counsellors to get a counselling job. There are very few counselling type jobs for the unqualified.

Also there have been big changes in the qualifications/training of counsellors over the last 2-3 yrs.

Its really not the 'mickey mouse' type thing that some people make it out to be. Its incredibly expensive to study and hard work. 5 years of study isn't something you do without commitment.

I knew somebody who was training to be a counsellor and she was the most fucked up messed up person I've ever met.

Out of all the many professionals I've seen, I've only had one I didn't really click with. I think I've been incredibly lucky!

I didn't think own therapy was necessarily part of relate training in way it is for other types of counselling. And to be fair this was some years ago so things may have changed.

I'd be very surprise if it wasn't and a relate counsellor would def have a supervisor.

As I said some relate counsellors will be trainees who are doing their practice hours with relate they'd be 3-4th year students. They would definitely be having counselling as part of that training.

Cleo. Lots of trainees don't make it to the end of the course. They also have peer reviews so if there is someone in your study group who you have serious concerns about your feedback is taken onboard.
