I went to the doctor about my depression and he pescribed me this but judging by the other threads it will cause me to put wieght on. This in itself would fuel my dpression. Should I take it?
I have bad pmt with me feeling very irratable and snapping at dd. Also feel hopeless etc but still have appetite and some motivation. I just get the feeling of being so trapped by single motherhood etc.

toptramp I was prescribed these many years ago before I had my DD, and they were fantastic for me. I wasn't overweight on them, but I guess it's possible they do contribute to weight gain for some people. I felt calm, and even happy when on them, and only had to stop taking them when I fell pregnant. They gave me the lift I needed when things were hard for me, and I have nothing but good things to say about them. Obviously it's your decision but my experience of taking them was a positive one.

I don't know about Citalporam but we have a support thread here if you'd like to join us and I'm sure someone on there will know

I am on a very low dose so if I keep excercising and eating healthy then mabe I won't gain much. i have been feeling very unhinged recently. Good to hear some positive things.

I've been on this medication three times in the last 10 years and it really helped me get through some difficult phases. I felt that I owed it to my children to be as calm as I could and not take out my negative feelings on them. It works.

I hope you feel better soon.

My sister takes it. It has helped her but she has put on a lot of weight. I think, on balance, she'd rather be on it and put up with the weight.

bananaistheanswer · 04/04/2012 18:38

I think it's worth a try at least, and see how things go. But join the support thread too, as it will help if you need to ask questions. From memory I think I was on either 10 or 15 mg when prescribed them. I was already well into my recovery so was on the way back up and they really helped me enormously. Good luck with things.

I seem to be losing weight on them...10mg. Maybe when I up to 20mg on Friday I'll get more side effects but otherwise I haven't really had any, apart from feeling even more apathetic and zombielike than usual for a few hours a day and nausea when yawning. I'm wondering if maybe this means I might be getting my moods back...feel like I haven't had a change of mood in three years, apart from nothing > plummet and slowly back again. Anyway, OP, I think you could just take your chances with a low dose.

Does anyone know if it just increases your appetite as opposed to, I don't know, slowing down your metabolism or whatever? Because if so you have some degree of control over things.

Hi.I was on 20mg and have put myself on 10mg after a year.I haven't noticed any weight gain and it certainly is helping me re anxiety. You could see how you go.

Doobydoo · 04/04/2012 19:00

Haven't had increased appetite.I know everyone is different though.

foxeeroxee · 04/04/2012 19:08

Have been on it for 2months and on 2 other occasions in the past 7years. never had any weight gain or side effects...am on 20mg.
Take it and see how you go if you have any problems go back to your gp to discuss it.
Im doing this myself as this time the citalopram dont appear to be working :-(
Hope it works for you!

toptramp · 04/04/2012 19:43

What I find totally amazing is that this is supposed to help with anxiety and yet the doctor says that one of the side effects is anxiety. wtf!

Go careful, obviously they affect different people in different ways but i had them prescibed a few yrs ago when i was at a very low point in my life and after about 2 weeks on them, i felt postively sucicidal. I stopped taking them and never went back on them. I couldnt beleive they made me feel worse than i felt before taking them.

DollyTwat · 04/04/2012 19:47

Toptramp I've been on them 10mg since Xmas
They've changed my life
Give them a go. I took them every other day for 2 weeks to start to reduce any side effects. Just get very vivid dreams now

foxeeroxee · 04/04/2012 19:53

I also found it very strange that something that my gp prescribed me could possibly make me feel even worse than i already do....maybe thats why they dont seem to be working this time?!? Confused

Sparklingbrook · 04/04/2012 19:58

I nearly jacked them in after 2 weeks as it does get worse before it gets better but I kept going and now 9 months later I can see they have changed my life.

i have put a bit of weight on but i think it's because I am more relaxed and I haven't been watching my diet at all.

Now it's just the vivid dreams as a side effect.

My counsellor describes it as 'taking the rough edges off things'. I feel calmer and braver.

Good luck

Anyone know what it will do to my sex drive? I am dating and have recently met a man who will almost certainly cheer me up! I don't want this drug to ruin this. I am suspicious of antio depressants as I feel the side affects mihght counter act the positives.

foxeeroxee · 05/04/2012 11:15

Personally iv never had any probs with sex drive Wink whether iv been on ads, pregnant, newborn in the house etc its one of the few things not affected by my depression....must be a horny bugger haha

hope said bloke can cheer you up

toptramp · 05/04/2012 13:39

I guess if I'm depressed and horny then I don't think a low dose of ad is going to make much difference. In fact I've been up for it for about a month now so mabe I need calming down!
