Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well
b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500
BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.
FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories
miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk
NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE
NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size
SV = Scale Victory
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.
WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Same @MadMazie - I love the theatre of it!

@TeaRose29 I am going dry until 24th July I think - feel free to check in here!

Ideally, in the long-term I guess I would be at a place where I have a couple of glasses and enjoy them but don't lose my head and finish the bottle and cripple myself the next day 😂I'm also keen to move away from "default" drinking ie it's friday, let's have wine. To that end I can recommend Tanquery Zero and Friexinet 0% cava - both really good AF alternatives. If only all still AF wine wasn't so ghastly!

Signing in for day 2 of b2b as well.

I had a bit of a fail yesterday as i got home to a lovely dinner made by my husband...haven't added up the calories yet but think i'll be on 1000 or more. Today i'm doing my exercise class after work so not fasting but still trying to take it easy! Will calorie count!

@harriethoyle I've managed to stop the default drinking but i seem to just have something each weekend where i do end up drinking...i do tend to only drink one night a week but i still think going dry would be good for me! Unfortunately my will power is lacking...

Let's do it, @harriethoyle ! Slimline tonic with a dash of bitters plus ice and slice of orange is my low-cal AF go-to.

I'm going for a protein mini today.

harriethoyle · 01/07/2026 20:18

A friend recommended this Lidl aperitivo Rosso@TeaRose29 - I haven’t tried it yet but going to give it a rattle at the weekend with either tonic or soda water.

FD tomorrow I think, went to spinning tonight and inhaled a massive bowl of pesto pasta so my mini went out the window 🤣

My scales have broken 😑 they settle on a weight then go crazy and settle on another...so I'm anything from a few pounds down to a few pounds more!

harriethoyle · 02/07/2026 09:24

How annoying @mumofbun - get yourself some new ones so you don't think you've put on half a stone overnight 😂

Signing in for FD3: soup and fishcake today.

NSV though - another inch off the waist!

harriethoyle · 03/07/2026 07:52

That’s great @mumofbun !

forgot to check in last night but closed on 559. No plans this weekend so am aiming for virtue!

I am STARVING today! Have fish and chips planned for later (sorry!) but exercise class at lunch.

Managed to get my scales working I think and see another few pounds down which is great!

harriethoyle · 03/07/2026 14:28

Me too @mumofbun - had my lunchtime sandwich which was c400 cals (as opposed to usual 250) then had to go back for a piece of toast. And I had breakfast this morning!

harriethoyle · 05/07/2026 15:28

@TeaRose29 and anyone else reducing their alcohol consumption: PSA the Kylie alcohol free fizz is decent, both the white and the rosé. The Lidl own brand is drinkable but not as good.

Message ends!

So. My first weekend totally off the booze in FOREVER.

My scales this morning showed me 1/4 lb DOWN on Fridays weight despite going at least 500 cals over my TDEE every day of the weekend. Usually I’m 3-4 lb up and spend the week losing that and a little bit more.

That’s both instructive and depressing isn’t it?! 🤣

Signing in for day 1 of a b2b… who’s with me?

OP posts:
TeaRose29 · 06/07/2026 09:18

Protein mini for me today @harriethoyle and also AF since 1 July. I’m the same, been hungry and eating a lot, but the scales are down. Apparently our bodies can use acetate, a by-product of alcohol metabolism, as fuel, so when we cut out booze we don’t have that fuel source and can feel hungry and tired.

Feel like I’m totally into Dry July now, although I haven’t yet been tested with a social occasion - we are going out for a meal with friends on Thursday, so I will have to have my mindset in place beforehand, as everyone else will be on the red wine. DH is going away for a few days next week, which will be helpful, as he is definitely not doing Dry July 🤣.

Did you try the Lidl Aperitivo? I really like Crodino, which you can get in Sainsbury’s sometimes. Personally I don’t like the Kylie Minogue sparkling AF, I find it much too sweet. I’ve been getting Sainsbury’s AF red wine and making a sort of sangria with it, using ice, AF Martini and orange slices. Plus I’m glued to Wimbledon so just drinking gallons of tea! 😊🎾

harriethoyle · 06/07/2026 15:26

I haven't tried the aperitivo yet - going to break it out on Friday with some tonic water I think @TeaRose29 so will report back.

My first social occasion is Saturday but I am driving to ensure there's no chance of a slip!

Hungry today, off to meet a friend in 20 minutes but only for coffee and he's driving so no temptation there...
