Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well
b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500
BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.
FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories
miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk
NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE
NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size
SV = Scale Victory
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.
WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

I‘m also here @harriethoyle - its mid 20s here so not as hot as down south, but for someone who has more thermal vests than pairs of shorts its still a struggle.

unfortunately sunny weather and heat makes me crave melted cheese, fries and crisps. Ugh. But I’m not giving up - Greek yoghurt and berries for lunch.

HLBug · 23/06/2026 14:02

PSA that Mini Solaro’s are only 53 calories

harriethoyle · 23/06/2026 21:01

Yeah. But I’d eat 3 @HLBug 😂

Kitchen closing on 513. See you all tomorrow!

harriethoyle · 24/06/2026 10:18

Signing in for day 2. Have already eaten 4 celebrations in my colleagues room..!!

I'm doing my second fast today. It's not too bad so far as the heat is killing my appetite.

I weighed myself on Monday and was no longer obese
My BMI was a svelte 29.9 from a starting point of 31.5. Sadly I don't seem to look any slimmer for it!

harriethoyle · 24/06/2026 16:23

That's great @MadMazie - what a NSV! Have you done your measurements? They are good for capturing the nuances that the naked eye can miss...

I’m doing an impromptu mini as the heat is killing my appetite too. I’ve just had my “lunch” and will probably just have a small snack later. Can’t believe it’s this hot in Northumberland! 🥵🥵

HLBug · 24/06/2026 18:14

Amazing NSV @MadMazie - congratulations!!

harriethoyle · 24/06/2026 19:18

I grew up in Northumberland @TeaRose29 - near a town called Hexham. Very picturesque!

Kitchen closing on 788 and honestly, it has NOT been an effort. Contemplating a mini tomorrow tbh because I might as well make weight loss hay while the relentless sun beats down incessantly shines!

I measured my waist so maybe I'll do that again. I would like to start looking visibly different soon and get into some of my old clothes!

TeaRose29 · 25/06/2026 08:55

1 pound off this morning, yay! Now only a half pound off my pre-holiday weight Blush.
Same here @harriethoyle , will do another mini today as it wasn’t hard. I wonder why we don’t feel like eating when it’s so hot? Perhaps our bodies are too busy focusing on cooling us down to be abe to cope with digestion?

MadMazie · 25/06/2026 09:48

Another pound lost yesterday, taking my total loss to 10.8 pounds. It's annoying that I still look the bloody same!!

harriethoyle · 25/06/2026 10:35

I've three pounds to go before I'm back to holiday weight @TeaRose29 - hoping I sweat one off today 😂

Kitchen closing on 897 although I might have another AF lager so could go up. Won’t be over 1000 so I’m really happy with that for a NFD.

Another lb off overnight - now to try not to wreck it over the weekend!

You probably don't look the same but it's really hard do be objective looking at yourself! Have you done any progress photos?

HLBug · 29/06/2026 08:13

Checking in for a Monday Mini. Same as my usual FD but with the added bonus of an after school trip to the ice cream farm to celebrate the last week of term.

harriethoyle · 29/06/2026 10:11

I'm fasting today @HLBug so I will join you - may also be more of a mini, I slept appallingly last night (still awake at 1am and alarm went at 5.20am 😴) so it is going to be a STRUGGLE to properly fast. But I will give it a good go.

BTW - anyone else late 40s and finding that their hangovers are nigh on unbearable after more than a couple of glasses?! Yesterday was a complete wipe out after Saturday night's shenanigans and I wonder if I have reached the tipping point of drinking of any significance not being worth the pain... 😭Feels so boring!

OP posts:
mumofbun · 29/06/2026 11:03

I'm here! I'm fasting! 26 says until holiday so I'm locking in...

MadMazie · 29/06/2026 18:05

I'm fasting too!
Having a really bad day at work so having to resist the urge to eat chips to feel better.

@harriethoyle I'm with you on the hangovers in 40s! I've massively cut down drinking as I had high triglycerides so needed to anyway and I'm shocked at how much better I feel.

harriethoyle · 29/06/2026 18:19

Kitchen closing on 855 for day 1 of a b2b. Back tomorrow for day 2 and I’ll aim for a lower total to try and get close to 1300.

I’m interested to see if 3 weeks off the sauce makes me feel noticeably better @MadMazie - it certainly won’t do me any harm!

OP posts:
HLBug · 29/06/2026 19:13

Kitchen closing at roughly 850 as well @harriethoyle
Hope you’ve also had good days @mumofbun and @MadMazie
Back tomorrow for Day 2

MadMazie · 29/06/2026 23:01

@harriethoyle it's actually annoying as I love drinking wine and being drunk. I'd rather it didn't make such a difference! It's not just physical it's emotional too. I'm so much less anxious.

TeaRose29 · 30/06/2026 10:11

I’m the opposite these days, @harriethoyle . Have always enjoyed wine (don’t really like spirits or beer) but if I have anything more than a glass or so I will wake up the next morning with not only a fuzzy head but crippling anxiety. I think I’m going to do a dry July as it also makes such a difference to my fat loss - as you know, alcohol halts glucose burning until the body has got rid of it.
