Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well
b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500
BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.
FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories
miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk
NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE
NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size
SV = Scale Victory
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.
WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Ah, I’m in the central belt @HLBug so not long now for you. I got my sunglasses out for the school run this morning!

so my challenge today is not to have a post fast binge!! That can be a danger for me. I was stressing on the school run that I didn’t manage to eat breakfast before leaving. And then I hit delay after closed road after temporary traffic light because I took a different way home 😫. I am eating now and hoping I am not starving 30 mins afterwards 😂.

HLBug · 17/03/2026 18:57

Kitchen closing on 616 for Day 2 of my B2B.
Soup and some Baby Bel Lights for tea!

Hope you enjoyed your post FD today @SmellyMe!
I’m already looking forward to tomorrow’s hot cross bun and banana!

harriethoyle · 17/03/2026 19:20

Well done @SmellyMe and @HLBug - excellent FD and b2b respectively!

I’m fasting tomorrow, a busy day with post op appointments for DH so as long as I can swerve the post-gym hunger I should be ok. Tuna sandwich and a fishcake and broccoli are on the meal plan.

OP posts:
HLBug · 17/03/2026 20:29

Hope all goes well with the post OP checks and that your DH is starting to feel better

harriethoyle · 18/03/2026 11:21

Thanks @HLBug - been to the gym for a circuits class this morning and have explained the concept of fast days to my MIL for the umpteenth time and why dinner of a pork and apple burger in a brioche bap with a few chips probably wasn’t FD compliant 🤣🤣🤣

TeaRose29 · 18/03/2026 15:49

I can see you are having a battle @harriethoyle ! Hope your FD is going well.

I'm doing a mini today.

B = 0% Greek yogurt with toasted almonds
L = same as B.
D = homemade fish chowder (just salmon, tomatoes, onions and stock)

I've already done 8,500 steps as well, and I was a pound down when I weighed this morning, so feeling a bit thinner. The jeans await me! 🤣🤣

harriethoyle · 18/03/2026 16:09

@TeaRose29 can you tell me which 0% Greek yoghurt you use? I love the Lidl flavoured ones but the plain one is yuck and I like Greek yoghurt with granola on NFD…

TeaRose29 · 18/03/2026 16:23

@harriethoyle I always buy the Fage brand. It's more expensive (although often on offer in Tesco or Sainsbury's) but is higher in protein than most others, and has a very solid texture, so it's more filling. My trick is usually to mix the 0% half and half with the Fage 5%, which is much creamier, and not much higher in calories. Today I'm sticking with the 0% for minimum calories. I add a bit of vanilla extract, which makes it taste much nicer.

harriethoyle · 18/03/2026 17:20

I’ll give it a go thanks @TeaRose29 - I always put a squeeze of honey in mine for that hit of sweetness.

Kitchen closing on 647 which I’m happy enough with. Tomorrow is a very quiet day and so I don’t think a FD is feasible (I need to be busy!) but I will walk the dog and go to the gym.

Please may I join?
In my fifties, want to lose my bloating tummy, and gain a healthy mind and body.
Followed this many years ago, have revisited since but not been able to stick with it- prob not even for a day!
Dipping a toe in with a miniFD today. Starter's enthusiasm!
Any tips please? Drip feed calories throughout the day, or save til the end?
Thank you!

TeaRose29 · 19/03/2026 09:26

Hello @Buntyforgirls ! I think everyone is different on timings. Personally I am never hungry in the morning so I don’t eat anything until lunchtime. I also go for low calorie protein like yogurt and tuna.

Buntyforgirls · 19/03/2026 13:00

Thank you @TeaRose29 .
It's 1pm and I am hungry, and ready to eat!
Worried that if I start I wont be able to stop!

HLBug · 19/03/2026 18:09

Welcome @Buntyforgirls - how did you get on?

I also did a mini today - kitchen closing on 1036. Planned for because I am out for dinner / cinema tomorrow and also succumbed to winter berry crumble and vanilla custard last night Grin

re Greek Yoghurt - I also rate Fage (which I also enjoy rhyming incorrectly with vag, because I am a child) but the M&S vanilla one is amazing. It’s not 0% but a little goes a long way - it’s my FD lunch of choice.

harriethoyle · 19/03/2026 18:17

@HLBug @TeaRose29 i bought some 0% vag 🤭 today - will have it tomorrow and report back!

@Buntyforgirls welcome! I always hold out until at least lunch, keep the cals light then and then go high at dinner. I also bulk up with lots of broccoli, courgette, carrots etc - low cal high volume veg. Makes me feel like it’s been a decent dinner even though it’s low cal.

Hi can I join? I successfully lost 12 pounds doing IF in 2024, but have been messing around for the past year and I’ve put nearly all of it back on. I tried on some clothes in M&S (not my usual shop of choice) yesterday and was genuinely shocked by how I look. I’m 51 and on Tamoxifen, planning on doing 16:8

Buntyforgirls · 19/03/2026 21:27

Thanks everyone for the welcome!
Managed to end on 850 cals, so a bit over my plan- it was the sesame oil for my evening stirfry that did it!- but am pleased how it went.
It was hard- can't imagine managing 500 cals- well done to those who do.
It feels good to be in control, and to be taking healthy steps for my body.

HLBug · 19/03/2026 21:53

Well done @Buntyforgirls - that’s an amazing first day back!

@DominoLover51 - I’m also a new returner - I’m feeling so much better mentally and physically after being back in this space after a few years away. Look forward to hearing how you get on!

HLBug · 20/03/2026 08:04

Friday weigh in : one pound down from last week. Progress is slooooow but we’re travelling in the right direction.

SW 11st 12.8lb
CW 11st 8.02lb
GW 10st 7lb

harriethoyle · 20/03/2026 08:57

Amazing @HLBug well done!

TeaRose29 · 20/03/2026 10:15

Well done everyone for your perseverance and weight losses! I’m down half a pound, which feels so little for so much effort! I’m going for another ‘protein mini’ today- DH is out this evening which makes it easier. I’m playing tennis this afternoon so will need to eat beforehand.

Tomorrow evening we are trying a new Sri Lankan restaurant, so I’ll try to make good choices, and also eat very sparingly during the day. It’s so easy to undo all the hard work!

@HLBug I will have to get some of that M&S vanilla as an alternative to vag 🤣🤣

DominoLover51 · 20/03/2026 11:40

@HLBugthanks. Doing ok so far today. I had a late dinner last night cause I was late home from work, so fasting till 2/2.30 today. I’ve also ordered some Berbetine capsules from Amazon and might order some more of the Cortisol control capsules. I thought they weren’t helping, but I think they did make a bit of difference to my stress levels which in turn impacts on my eating and weight.

Here are my stats:

SW 9st6.25
CW 9st6.25
GW 8st5

I might review my goal weight depending on how I feel, aware that this weight might make me too thin in my face. Last time I got down to 8st10, it took me 6 months to lose 12 pounds. Will weigh in next week

DominoLover51 · 20/03/2026 11:41

Meant to say big well done to everyone who has lost/is losing weight

Buntyforgirls · 20/03/2026 19:04

Thank you @HLBug, and well done on your loss- every pound, and less!, is a good feeling.
Was not hungry this morning- just normal appetite- which surprised me as I was hungry when I went to bed.
I am on hols for a week, but determined to give it my all when I return.
Considering ADF. Does anyone else eat this way?
Happy Weekend everyone!

HLBug · 21/03/2026 18:15

Doh. Just worked out my TDEE on non FDs has been about 200 cal too high! No wonder progress has been slow!! I’m using a different calorie counting app this time around and it has a 5:2 mode which I thought had automatically calculated my TDEE…. but it must’ve set it to a moderate exercise zone rather than sedentary / light. What a dafty Grin At least I’ve worked it out now… Hmm My morning hot cross bun will need to go though!
