Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Also, welcome @Errolwasaheroand @SmellyMe

OohMrDarcy · 11/04/2025 07:59

Morning all

Managed to sts this week which I'm happy with after the dominos snaccident! Will weigh again tomorrow just in case there is actually a small loss but not expecting one tbh.

Off out for a 10km hike this morning with my boy and dog so off to enjoy more of the sunshine now.

@Errolwasahero I use nutracheck and weigh anything needed (eg chicken breast)

Errolwasahero · 11/04/2025 08:21

My problem is that I will usually make a batch of a thing, chuck ingredients in together and just portion it out. So last night I made a big pasta salad, just took out the pasta for me and had a small portion. I’m not sure I could work out what amount of everything I have, even if I weigh out the original. The best bit is that we have tonight’s dinner ready, and often have a portion left for freezing, too!

I don’t suppose it’s too bad, though; I was 74.7kgs on Monday, 74.1 today. 🤟🤟

harriethoyle · 11/04/2025 08:46

Yes @SmellyMe i use mfp religiously. The best way of dealing with communal cooking @Errolwasahero is to do ie chicken breast, wedges and salad and you skip the wedges. I weigh everything I cook from scratch on FDs. It’s tedious but worth it and the more you do it the more you can just enter recurring recipes without the calculations.

thanks @eekwhatnow - would it help with the motivation if I told you I’m down another 0.7kg this morning?! No idea where these SV are coming from but I think it’s probably more accurate tracking on NFD and the exercise which I’m really enjoying!

Somehow I've managed to do another fast, that's 3 back to back. Im so pleased I've managed to fall back into it, as I used to do 3 fasts a week. My new work schedule keeps me busy! Kitchen closed at 704. Well done to everyone who fasted today 👏 I'm looking forward to pizza 🍕 tomorrow! 😋

SmellyMe · 11/04/2025 19:54

OMG, my DH asked for fish and chips tonight. I didn’t even have chips and I feel like I am going to burst. I hope this eyes bigger than tummy thing continues and I eat less on my non FDs going forward!!

Have a lovely weekend everyone. Back to FD on Monday 😀

MinnieCauldwell · 13/04/2025 08:15

I managed to meet a friend out this week on a FD, in a place where everyone was eating, I managed to just have two black coffees. I usually just sit at home on FD so that was a bit of an achievement to socialise and still fast.

I stick rigidly to 500 cals on FD, breakfast at 08.00 then dinner at 8.00pm. So a 12 hour fast. Find I am having the same meals though. I got a calorie controlled meal from Marks but they always contain carb which I try to avoid completely on FD.

harriethoyle · 14/04/2025 07:21

Morning all. What are your FD plans for the week? I’m on a mini today and FD tomorrow because I’m training tonight. Probably minis Wednesday Thursday to try and counteract the Easter indulgence!

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 14/04/2025 07:42

Morning all

Monday FD for me today. Have the last portion of my homemade spicy veg soup for lunch and some roast chicken with Cesar salad for dinner ... My fingers are crossed for a good week because the usual Monday fluctuation is lower than normal.🤞🏻🤞🏻

Other FD is Thursday for me this week.. not expecting a massive amount of indulgence so hopefully be ok.

eekwhatnow · 14/04/2025 07:43

Morning! I’m going for 800 FDs on Tuesday and Wednesday and mini’s today and Thursday. Not a terrible weekend here despite having people round etc so feeling a bit more able!

SmellyMe · 14/04/2025 08:06

FD for 500 for me. It works for me to eat around 11am; have a carrot if I am desperate during the day; and dinner at around 6.30pm. I’m also taking the view of forget-the-expense and making the most delicious food I can within my calorie budget. Good luck all.

oh and well done @MinnieCauldwell, I could not do that. I am legendary for pinching chips any time!!

Darker · 14/04/2025 08:49

Morning. Monday weigh-in was good considering my last FD was a week ago. Down 2lbs - so I’m wondering if my last weigh- in was correct?

Anyway I’m encouraged! FD today. Had no dinner last night due to indulgent snacking during the day so I’m already growling.

SmellyMe · 14/04/2025 19:35

Kitchen closing 503 😊

It was quite tough today as I had to come home from
work, cook dinner for DCs, plan and calculate dinner for me and DH and then cook it! I must plan better for the next FD!

harriethoyle · 14/04/2025 20:05

Excellent FD @SmellyMe !

1026 for todays PT mini, happy with that. More of a classic FD tomorrow I think as no gym.

OohMrDarcy · 14/04/2025 20:59

Kitchen closed on 424.

Congratulations on the sv @Darker

Darker · 14/04/2025 21:08

some inspiring FD’s going on!

Settling to a late supper of spinach omelette.

harriethoyle · 14/04/2025 21:16

Did you stay strong despite the early hunger @Darker ?

OP posts:
Darker · 14/04/2025 21:45

I think I did ok, thank you @harriethoyle. A small bit of leftover cooked chicken at lunch, a banana and my omelette. I feel well fed on that and ready for a good night’s sleep.

Planning on a mini tomorrow.

harriethoyle · 14/04/2025 21:56

You’ll be my inspiration tomorrow @Darker when I’m keeling over mid morning 🤣

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 15/04/2025 08:25

morning all

@harriethoyle - hope today goes well and you aren't keeling over yet! 😂

scales show a fab loss this morning so I'm hoping to keep sensible and have another good FD on Thursday so I can confirm it!

harriethoyle · 15/04/2025 08:52

Just back from a dog walk @OohMrDarcy and starving so I’ve swapped my cals round to enable toast 🤣 Congrats on the SV, very motivating. Good inspiration to be virtuous until Friday morning!

eekwhatnow · 15/04/2025 08:56

Morning all. Enjoying these doses of inspiration! Finished on 1100 yesterday despite eating out and a long walk so I’m pleased with myself there. Have allowed myself up to 800 today as have a work project requiring quite a lot of brain power, followed by a family meal this evening. We’ll see how much under that I can go though, as woken feeling strong, and now you’ve all inspired me!

TeaRose29 · 15/04/2025 18:19

10.3 1/4 this morning, which is my lowest weight since last year, so very pleased. Haven’t felt at all hungry today (in spite of playing tennis for 2.5 hours, think I must be in ketosis) so it’s turned into a “dirty mini” Blush - had 250g kefir protein earlier, and we have bridge tonight so I’m just going to have a few peanuts and a couple of G&STs. Planning a proper mini tomorrow!

harriethoyle · 15/04/2025 18:44

Fabulous @TeaRose29 well done!

kitchen closing here on 635, mini tomorrow so will aim for less than 1000 - last one before Easter and the in laws are staying. I ADORE my mil but dear God, she’s a feeder 🤣

Kitchen closed at 613. Going to try a back to back fast tomo to get it out of the way! Well done to all who fasted today! A long time ago when I first joined this thread I think a lady called chocfrenzy ran it?! Do we know how she is? Was thinking of her the other day.
