Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Evening all. Have been chugging along in the background, two successful FDs last week, and looking good for today as well. Busy day with (too many) calls helped it go quickly! Tea gone slightly awry as elder DD announced she wanted to make it again, but should still come in around 500 🤞🏻Scales are creeping downwards again too after the plateau, so a good reminder to trust the process!

eekwhatnow · 25/03/2025 07:56

Pleased for you @aberjenagain that's good news.
Checking in for FD 1 today but will be tricky. Miso soup and coffee until this evening and then have promised to make a Thai curry so will have a small portion of that.
Tomorrow will be FD2 so my first attempted b2b. I was going to just fast tomorrow and make yesterday and today minis but didn't work out that way!!

MinnieCauldwell · 25/03/2025 08:08

Hi all started my 5.2 for first time last week. Regarding the Minis, is that reducing your cal in take on a non FD? Sorry if being a bit thick.

I have decided not to use scales just yet and look to get a more comfortable fit of my now very tight clothes...

SydneyCarton · 25/03/2025 08:34

Did a mini yesterday as I have three office days this week so aiming for three minis. Could have come in around 1000 but fell foul of a homemade flapjack, one tiny square was 250 calories 😮. Delicious but not quite sure it was worth it! Finished on 1300

OohMrDarcy · 25/03/2025 08:47

morning all

Weighed myself this morning and annoyed at still faffing around the same couple of kg..... SO

Time to MAKE SURE I fit in two full FDs a week and refocus properly.

FD today and Thursday. Food for today planned, a bit of repetition but it will get it done.
Chinese chicken with salad bits for lunch
Roast chicken with cesar salad bag for dinner.

Plenty of veg, next to no carbs and plenty of protein. Going to plan ahead for Thursday too so I have no excuse to cancel it!

Welcome @MinnieCauldwell - people use minis for different things... it essentially means anything upto 1000 cals. Some use it to ease them into fasting, some use it as a halfway house if they aren't 100% and not up to a 'proper' FD.

MinnieCauldwell · 25/03/2025 10:20

Boredom is a problem on the FDs; I am home all day and the hours drag...Will try to get a walk in today, but have a disability so most exercise not possible.

Darker · 25/03/2025 10:22

I struggle with the conflict between my commitment to the diet and my abhorrence of food waste… canny shopping and meal planning required.

I did ok yesterday. Not brilliant. Salad at lunch. Got stuck on the motorway on my way home so was tired and hungry when I arrived and had a slice of bread and butter, which is probably not good.

But I had a NSV at work with people noticing that I’d shed a few bits of wobble.

harriethoyle · 25/03/2025 10:22

Yes I’m a bored eater too @MinnieCauldwell - fasting is much easier on a day that I’m busy!

OohMrDarcy · 25/03/2025 10:23

Hi @MinnieCauldwell

It can be tricky to get past boredom... keep your brain as busy as you can if you need to rest lots - reading books / watching TV / puzzles etc

One that helps me, is reminding myself that anything I am fancying - I can have it tomorrow. I'm not denying myself anything - just delaying it.

eekwhatnow · 25/03/2025 22:19

Kitchen closed on 648. First time I've tried to just have supper, rather than lunch and supper, and it was fine although I did fall fast asleep for half an hour when I sat down at 4pm, must've literally run out of energy!

eekwhatnow · 26/03/2025 07:21

Checking in for FD2. I've weighed myself this morning and have lost 2kg this month. Not super speedy and worry that it's all water weight but if I can keep that up I'll really get there.

harriethoyle · 26/03/2025 07:34

Well done @eekwhatnow - that’s fabulous!

I’m aiming for a mini today, PT at 3pm so will need to go slightly above usual fast fare…

OohMrDarcy · 26/03/2025 09:39

Kitchen closed at 520 last night and the day ended with a 30 mins walk in the dark. Super happy it went really well.

Next FD is Thursday - going to have one of my vegetable soups for lunch and either chicken or a single egg omelette with veg for dinner I think

TeaRose29 · 26/03/2025 11:29

I'm similar to you @harriethoyle , PT on Mondays and double tennis on Tuesdays, so I need a bit of energy on those days. Been stuck on a plateau for months and determined to unstick myself. Planning a mini today:

B = protein shake
L = kippers on toast
D = chicken soup

That should be no more than 1200 calories. Aching all over and can't face a proper FD! 😊.

Darker · 26/03/2025 12:39

Attempting a FD today. A bit unscheduled, but sometimes you just have to grab the moment.

Have so far had coffees. Planning to go for a walk in a few minutes to get through the lunch break. Probably boiled eggs later.

eekwhatnow · 26/03/2025 22:08

Kitchen closed on 506 which is my best yet. And my first b2b. Think it helped that I've been really busy. Looking forward to tomorrow though.

OohMrDarcy · 27/03/2025 07:17

How did the unscheduled FD go @Darker ?

Wel done @eekwhatnow

Checking in for my Thursday FD. Have decided I'm having my soup for dinner and some chicken and veg for lunch.

Had a good day yesterday and didn't see the usual eating post FD gain (where there is food to be digested... So hopefully that is a good sign for this week!

Darker · 27/03/2025 07:28

Good luck @OohMrDarcy

It went well. I had two boiled eggs late afternoon and some veggies at dinner. Plus a slop of milk in my coffees but I reckon that all comes in under 500. I distracted myself with a walk at lunch and another in the evening and clocked 17k steps.

OohMrDarcy · 27/03/2025 08:29

nice! Well done :)

aberjenagain · 27/03/2025 09:00

Fingers crossed for you @OohMrDarcy !
Well done @Darker and @eekwhatnow
Welcome @MinnieCauldwell 😊
How did the mini go @harriethoyle ? Are you enjoying the PT?

FD here today. Have switched to doing Mondays/thurdays, with swimming on Tuesdays/fridays as of last week (first swim last week since Oct was HARD but the next two felt better and I’m enjoying being back in the water 😊). Gym on hold until after Easter as I don’t want to risk messing my back up again before we go on hols (only bloomin’ went twice 🙄), but really want to get some sort of a strength routine in place once we’re back.

MinnieCauldwell · 27/03/2025 09:22

Thanks all for the welcome. NFD yesterday and I over ate as went to lunch with friends. FD today but feeling guilty about yesterday. I fast from 08.00am to 8pm. I need to lose wait but have been asked to try IF by my neurologist so for me does have to become a way of life, only on my second week but struggling a wee bit. My neurologist wants me to do 16.8 but not sure I can cope with that.

OohMrDarcy · 27/03/2025 10:35

16:8 includes sleep @MinnieCauldwell - so its saying basically you have an 8hr window for eating... eg - 12pm - 8pm or 9am - 5pm

TeaRose29 · 27/03/2025 10:37

Half a pound off this morning after yesterday's mini!

MinnieCauldwell · 27/03/2025 10:45

I know I sound pathetic but I like my glass of wine around 9 to 9.30 in the evenings at weekends and will miss it! My understanding is that 16.8 is every day
