Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Welcome back @HLBug - I’m fasting tomorrow so I’ll be with you! Just over a week before we relocate to the in laws for 5 weeks as DH needs an op and I can’t do it all alone - slightly terrified as to how I fight off my utterly delightful but feeder supreme of a MIL 🤣

HLBug · 22/02/2026 22:47

Aww thanks @Talkinpeace- is she still living in Germany? I remember her so fondly - and so inspiring with her weight training too. She was genuinely the reason I could keep going all those years ago.

@harriethoyleknowing you’re doing it with me tomorrow has convinced me I need to be a big girl and get on with it. So thank you for that! Good luck and see you on the other side.

harriethoyle · 23/02/2026 08:48

Signing in for my Monday fast after a PT session. We’ve got this @HLBug !

anyone else?

HLBug · 23/02/2026 16:07

Checking in @harriethoyle - how’s your day going?
I’ve relied on novelty factor and willpower a lot today. But I’m still going reasonably strong! Had a 7.30am business breakfast meeting and only had black tea, despite the pastries and bacon rolls everywhere! Had some Greek yoghurt and raspberries at 11.45am, before going into a working lunch with soggy sandwiches over lunchtime. Those were relatively easy to avoid Grin but I did sneak in a handful of grape about 2pm. Now I’m sitting with a banana, vanilla and strawberry protein shake post school pick up, and planning scrambled eggs and baked beans for dinner. All being well kitchen should close at 585 which I think is not too shabby for my first day back since….2019 at least?!

harriethoyle · 23/02/2026 16:32

That is absolutely awesome @HLBug - great effort!

I am STARVING. Had eaten half my lunch sandwich by 11.50 🤣 fishcake and broccoli for tea to bring me in around 650 then back tomorrow for day 2… 🤞🏼

Kitchen closed on 701. See everyone here tomorrow for my b2b!

OP posts:
HLBug · 23/02/2026 19:28

A Monday / Tuesday B2B was always my routine too @harriethoyle - then sometimes a Mini on a Fri or Sat if it happened naturally. Well done for completing day 1 today - I’ve found today more manageable than I thought so I might join you tomorrow too. I’ll see how I feel tomorrow - at the minimum I’ll do 16:8

harriethoyle · 23/02/2026 20:27

Gets it out of the way @HLBug doesn’t it? I might do another on Thursday in preparation for moving to the in laws next week and evading my MIL’s food is love mantra! 🤣

harriethoyle · 24/02/2026 08:21

Signing in for my b2b - gym class this morning and a smoothie on the train. Aiming for c700 today…

OP posts:
HLBug · 24/02/2026 11:49

Well it’s nearly lunchtime and I’ve only had a small latte, so it looks like I’m joining you with the B2B @harriethoyle- will have greek yoghurt and berries again for lunch.

harriethoyle · 24/02/2026 13:59

I'm soooooo hungry @HLBug and now I have to work late so won't be eating until at least 6.30... argh!

OP posts:
HLBug · 24/02/2026 19:03

Kitchen closed at 643 - omelette with bbq chicken, cheese and peppers for tea, with some salad leaves on the side. Still hungry so I’m going to go brush my teeth now so I’m not tempted to snack later. Feeling really pleased that I managed a good B2B for my first week back. Just need to stay sensible for the rest of the week and not ruin any progress!!

harriethoyle · 24/02/2026 19:28

You’ve smashed it @HLBug - I’ve limped in at 899 because of my post gym smoothie but wouldn’t have got through the day without it… 1600 for the b2b which is a bit high but I’ll do a third on Thursday to make up for it 🤞🏼

OP posts:
HLBug · 24/02/2026 20:58

I’m in awe of a PT yesterday and a gym session today on B2B days @harriethoyle. I think you’ve done an excellent shift! I may try for a mini later in the week while I’m still in the “this is a novelty” phase. I also felt it kept me on track later in the week as well - so I didn’t have 5 days straight of “normal” eating to slip back into bad habits and then dread Monday coming around again. I’ve prepped some overnight oats for tomorrow this evening - always find having meals prepared helps a lot on “in the office” days. Otherwise I end up spending £12 at Pret for not very much!

harriethoyle · 25/02/2026 07:58

It just happens PT and a class fall on my fasting days @HLBug so I decided to suck it up rather than put FD off to Weds and Thurs… yoghurt and granola this morning was deeeelicious!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 26/02/2026 08:56

Signing for third FD of the week. It'll be more like a mini I suspect as I am making ramen soup for dinner tonight but that won't be more than 400 I reckon. Aiming for c700...

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 26/02/2026 18:37

Kitchen closing on 698. Feeling virtuous! 🤣

OP posts:
HLBug · 27/02/2026 08:25

Well done @harriethoyle - what a great week!

I’m here for a Friday weigh in post. I didn’t weigh before starting so I’ll take today as both starting and current weight.

SW 11st 12.8lb
CW 11st 12.8lb

GW 10st 7lb (initially)

harriethoyle · 27/02/2026 08:52

Gym class this morning @HLBug then I was the annoying person on the train eating yoghurt and granola 🤣

OP posts:
HLBug · 02/03/2026 16:33

Checking in for a Monday FD, with the hope of it being a B2B tomorrow. I’m working for home today, so less temptation than last week! Kitchen should close at 675 all being well.

harriethoyle · 02/03/2026 16:38

I’m joining you tomorrow @HLBug - but today is my birthday so all bets are off 🤣

OP posts:
HLBug · 02/03/2026 20:55

Aww happy birthday @harriethoyle- hope you’ve had a lovely day and plenty of Cake and Wine. I’ll see you in the morning once all the fun and games have ended Grin

harriethoyle · 03/03/2026 10:51

Thanks @HLBug

I'm fricking starving 😂

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 03/03/2026 19:23

Kitchen closed on 569 - happy with that!

OP posts:
HLBug · 03/03/2026 20:00

Well done @harriethoyle- that’s a great day when I’m sure there’s still lots of cake and other birthday goodies lying around!

Kitchen Closing on 561 for me.
