Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Morning all, signing in for a loose fast day but have the gym after work so giving myself some leeway. Probably c800 cals.

Another SV this morning - 0.7kg off which makes 5.1kg since I started my gym programme. Lowest weight since 15th Jan 2014. Whoop whoop!!

Hello @aberjenagain good luck on your first fast day. I did my first one on Monday and will aim for #2 tomorrow.

I own the 5:2 recipe book and the fast 800 which I find really useful. Even if not fasting they’re good if you like cooking - and I do - so make eating food
pleasurable.

You can drink lots of water, fizzy water,
black tea (maybe coffee). I drank a lot on Tuesday. I seemed really dehydrated. I wasn’t doing it for a coping mechanism but felt I needed it.

500 cals is the aim for women but there is a calculator somewhere where you get your daily basal calorie intake ( what your body needs day to day not the recommended intake for a diet)- and divide by 4.

I am doing the 5:2 because the 2 day WOE appeals to me but I am really interested in the anti- inflammatory side effects. I’m hoping for an improvement in my skin.

on Monday, I ate a crab and artichoke salad around 11am. Snacked on a carrot at 1400 and had aubergine curry and Konjac rice for dinner at 1830.

I will plan and shop for tomorrow’s FD today.

good luck!

Thanks so much for your advice. Hoae books look good, il look for them on amazon. I'm fasting today too! Will update here later!

aberjenagain · 09/04/2025 09:19

ah, that’s amazing @harriethoyle , congrats!

TeaRose29 · 09/04/2025 09:27

Another 1/4 pound off this morning, yay! Yesterday was a “protein mini” plus a lot of exercise. Going for another mini today as I have my personal training and can’t usually manage less than 1000. DD and I have booked a holiday for end of May so this is a great incentive as I want to feel confident in a bikini!

Plan for today:
B = collagen coffee
L = protein shake
D = my low-cal corned beef hash

Good luck @harriethoyle , @Hdjdb42 and anyone else fasting today.

Well done! 💪 Thank you! If we do 2 back to back fasts, do we get slightly more calories?

Darker · 09/04/2025 10:51

Signing in for today. So far I have had a kefir yogurt which is going out of date, and coffee.

harriethoyle · 09/04/2025 11:41

Yes @Hdjdb42 - you get 1300 or thereabouts to divide as you wish over the two days, although each has to be a minimum of 500. I often do 500 day 1, 800 day 2 because I always find my second day on a b2b more difficult...

OP posts:
Darker · 09/04/2025 17:32

Doing ok. Just about to go for a walk. I had good news from a check up that my BP is quite noticeably improved from three months ago. Don’t know if that’s down to the Way of Eating but I am pleased with that.

Errolwasahero · 09/04/2025 17:51

Hi, hoping to restart my 5:2 journey and lose about 15kgs… did my first one on Monday. I have a question: if I have a light meal tonight and then very little tomorrow up to dinner time, do those 24 hours count as one fast day? Thanks!

harriethoyle · 09/04/2025 19:26

Hi @Errolwasahero and welcome. I aim for 500 cals from after teatime the night before the FD until breakfast the day after, so around 36 hours. Does that help?

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 09/04/2025 19:26

That’s brilliant @Darker well done!

Kitchen closed at 689. Going to try to do a back to back tomorrow!

harriethoyle · 09/04/2025 19:59

Forgot to say kitchen closed on 863 - happy enough with that with a gym session on top.

Great FD @Hdjdb42 😊

OP posts:
Errolwasahero · 09/04/2025 20:16

@harriethoyle wow that’s a long run! But yes thank you; will work up to that, I think 😬

Edited to say, didn’t read it properly; after tea not before tea. Yes that would be my aim too. Xx

harriethoyle · 09/04/2025 20:43

@Errolwasahero start with 800 per fast day then reduce it slowly. Also a lot easier to do if you skip breakfast! Then you’ve only two meals to spend the cals on.

OP posts:
SmellyMe · 09/04/2025 23:10

@Errolwasahero minday was my
first day, too. I’m also aiming for around the same loss as you. 2nd FD tomorrow for me!
good luck!

OohMrDarcy · 10/04/2025 08:36

Morning all

Messed up a little yesterday with a teen requested dominos... I did however stick to a small Italian crust so better than nothing I guess

Checking in for my FD as usual here. Doing pulled pork baps tonight so I'll just have the pork (no BBQ sauce) and salad for my dinner

Hdjdb42 · 10/04/2025 18:45

Kitchen closed at 644. That's 2 back to back fasts done for this week.

OohMrDarcy · 10/04/2025 19:25

Kitchen closed on 553 and that includes an accidental skinny iced vanilla latte

Also fitted in a 1.5hr walk @Hdjdb42

Congrats

SmellyMe · 10/04/2025 19:30

Kitchen closed at 486 today 😁. Week one done 💪🏼

harriethoyle · 10/04/2025 19:57

Well done @Hdjdb42 @OohMrDarcy @SmellyMe - excellent fasting!

OP posts:
Hdjdb42 · 10/04/2025 21:08

Well done @OohMrDarcy and @SmellyMe 💪 I did 40 minutes with the weighted hula hoop, trying to improve my posture after being hunched over my desk all day!

Errolwasahero · 11/04/2025 07:09

Well done @SmellyMe , and all the rest! I did a fd today, but I can’t imagine working out my calorie intake as accurately as you all do; how do you manage it? For eg, I had an apple for breakfast, around 200gms so about 100cs. Then a protein smoothie that was 220 per Scoop, with a drop of apple juice so I said 250. I had a very light salad but with about half a tin of chickpeas and some sunflower seeds, and a tahini dressing so I know I was somewhere around the 700 mark, I think! That’s about as accurate as I manage! 😂

SmellyMe · 11/04/2025 07:17

@Errolwasahero i use the MyFitnessPal app. Some cook books can be very unhelpful and have items like “1 chicken breast”. You really need to know the exact weight to get exact calories becuase there could be a difference of 100-150’depending on its weight!

You can scan barcodes of food products and it has most of them so it’s really fast.

it’s also free!

eekwhatnow · 11/04/2025 07:58

Morning all, I’ve been awol as was on holiday. A few days of being plied with food and booze by relatives but also plenty of hill walking which my watch tells me burnt 800 cals on at least 2 days so not all bad!
Looking forward to getting back on it now but it’ll be minis until the end of the Easter hols because I don’t want to be grumpy with the kids home, and I need a bit more fuel than 500 with the amount of activity we’ve got booked in.
Will use this time to try and nail my NFD routines as I usually find eating sensibly harder than fasting.
Was inspired to see everyone’s successes logging back in this morning, especially yours @harriethoyle
