Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Update: Still doing 16:8. Still working like a champ.

Last month, I put on a couple of pounds, so I was a bit more conscious with what I ate, this month. While still doing the fast. I ended up losing 5 pounds.

I actually didn't intend to lose that much. And I'm now about as low as I want go, now. Which, is 10 stone 6. Down from 15 stone 13, roughly 18 months ago.

So, I would still strongly recommend fasting to lose weight to anyone checking out this thread.

eekwhatnow · 15/04/2025 21:55

@dannyufcfanThat’s so encouraging! Thanks so much for sharing that.
I finished at 750 today and managed a 5k run in the morning so feeling pleased. Well done fasters.

SmellyMe · 15/04/2025 21:56

Wow, that’s amazing @dannyufcfan! Well done. Thank you for your encouragement and endorsement of fasting. It’s very helpful to read. I’m giving it a month to see how things go, but it looks positive so far and I’ve only done 3 FDs. I’m aiming for around a 2st loss overall.

Darker · 15/04/2025 22:38

Fantastic, @dannyufcfan !

I didn’t do brilliantly today because I felt a bit wibbly this morning and decided I just needed to eat but I ate healthily and definitely less than normal. I also got my steps in. So feeling ok. It’s definitely a marathon, not a sprint.

dannyufcfan · 15/04/2025 23:13

Good luck, all! You've got this :)

Errolwasahero · 16/04/2025 08:05

Morning all, enjoying reading about all your wins, you’re amazing!

I had a rough few days so didn’t fd until yesterday. BUT I did really well and came in at 420! My first proper one this time. Didn’t feel hungry at all, in fact I seem to be enjoying the ‘smaller’ feeling in my stomach. I had an apple in the morning; seem to get some benefit from the chewing! Then a protein smoothie and soup (Tesco’s tomato and basil)(300ml) for dinner. Lots of fluids all day. I’ve lost a kg so all good 👍

eekwhatnow · 16/04/2025 08:17

That’s great @Errolwasahero! Checking in for another 800 FD here. Annoyingly have no work and zero plans which is lovely, but not for a FD! Might force one of the kids to come on a long walk with me.

harriethoyle · 16/04/2025 08:23

Amazing @dannyufcfan! I’m a total convert to this WOL. It’s so sustainable!

well done @Errolwasahero that’s a great FD. @Darker sometimes it’s more important to listen to your body rather than fast. Just go easy today too and you’ll limit the damage.

@Hdjdb42 you’re thinking of bigchocfrenzy who was awesome and is much missed on these threads!

Got a 944 cal day planned today and a gym class after work 💪🏻 Good luck to any fasters!

10.2 this morning after yesterday's impromptu mini, so that's another pound and 1/4 off. Really pleased. I can feel the difference already in my clothes. I've cut carbs right out and it's making such a difference as I just don't feel hungry.

Another mini of about 800 planned for today. I had kefir protein and 40g of smoked mackerel for lunch, and I'm having a small tuna steak and asparagus for dinner.

I'm going on holiday at the end of May, and I so want to feel confident in a bikini! 😄

Hdjdb42 · 16/04/2025 16:23

Didn't do so well today as a friend dropped off some birthday cake for me! Kitchen closed at 885, it was a back to back fast. Might do another one tomorrow, to make way for my Malteser Easter egg on Sunday! Well done to those who fasted today.

harriethoyle · 16/04/2025 19:55

Mini finished at 985. Happy enough with that! Now for the overindulgence… see you all on Tuesday 🤣

Morning all

checking in for my last FD pre easter. Have some soup and chicken salad planned for today so fingers crossed for a good one

Darker · 17/04/2025 08:52

Morning. Checking in. I’m planning on a long walk and some Productivity today, then I’m usefully busy tonight so I’m hoping this is the recipe for a stonking good FD.

harriethoyle · 17/04/2025 12:06

Good luck @OohMrDarcy @Darker - I am just aiming to stay within my average NFD calorie allowance 😂Not overexerting myself! Then the same Monday and back to FD on Tuesday...

2nd FD done this week, Woop Woop! I didn’t manage to eat until 1230 today and I managed fine. It was 1950 before I got to dinner, too, and also impressed with myself. Have a lovely weekend all :)

Hdjdb42 · 17/04/2025 20:32

Kitchen closed at 763. It's my third back to back this week. So pleased I've done it, so I can enjoy Easter Sunday! Well done to all those who fasted today! Hope you all have a lovely long Easter weekend. 🥚 🐣 🍫

OohMrDarcy · 17/04/2025 22:35

Kitchen closed on around 550

Have a fab chocolate weekend (sensible of course!) all

OohMrDarcy · 18/04/2025 06:55

New low for Easter - 92.9kg a loss of 3/4kg and finally - FINALLY making proper progress again

My body must have needed a plateau for a while.. I know I've visibly shrunk in that time . So glad I just kept going

Have a lovely weekend all!

Darker · 18/04/2025 09:10

Good FD yesterday - nothing but 2 hard boiled eggs and tea all day (admittedly with milk). 20k steps. One tiny cheeky biscuit at the end of my work shift.

harriethoyle · 18/04/2025 16:02

Well done @Hdjdb42 @Darker @OohMrDarcy - fantastic work!

Errolwasahero · 18/04/2025 19:32

Well I haven’t got anything on this weekend so I’m 😇. Kitchen closed on 530 today; I am feeling especially 😇 because there are two slices of bread out that need eating… but I have left them until tomorrow when I will treat myself to a dirty toastie 😍😍😍

have a great weekend everyone!

OohMrDarcy · 18/04/2025 20:38

Fab going @Errolwasahero

Darker · 21/04/2025 12:04

Monday weigh-in very encouraging! Despite Easter feasting. I am not going to fast today because we have plans that involve more food. Planning to fast tomorrow. How is everyone doing?

SmellyMe · 21/04/2025 19:09

Kitchen is closing at 509 today. It was quite tough. I got pretty hungry but saved myself with lots of water and herbal tea. Tasty dinner. Good luck for the week ahead.

harriethoyle · 21/04/2025 19:41

My scales were horrifying this morning 🤣 mini tomorrow because I’ve got PT and then FD Wednesday and a mini on Thursday. Want to get the Easter gain off asap. But it’s been fun putting it on 🤭
