Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Fabulous @OohMrDarcy and @Mommybunny - well done! I’m also at a new low this morning: lowest weight since 3 April 2015 so exactly 10 years ago. Hurray!

Well done @harriethoyle and @OohMrDarcy !! 👏

OohMrDarcy · 03/04/2025 10:44

congrats @Mommybunny and @harriethoyle - a fab week all around!

TeaRose29 · 03/04/2025 11:01

Well done @harriethoyle , @OohMrDarcy and @Mommybunny ! You are all very inspiring!

I've had 3 really good exercise days with sensible eating. I'm working all day today (self-employed - always WFH) on a really interesting project and going for a FD. The weather is lovely and I might try taking my laptop outside. It's so true about deferred gratification.

harriethoyle · 03/04/2025 22:01

Airport lounge only had pizza available as food (genuinely true!) and so I’ve had to stoically eat one. I’ll fight the fight of virtue again tomorrow! Will probably stay off the booze to make up for it…

Well done @harriethoyle , @OohMrDarcy and @Mommybunny - fab work!

Checking in for FD2 here. Have also got back into the swing of regular pool sessions - hadn’t realised just how much I’ve missed swimming. Looking forward to lots more on hols, including hopefully a couple of dips in the sea (we’re off to the canaries).

aberjenagain · 05/04/2025 07:04

Good FD yesterday and good weigh-in this morning - weight now down to where I was around August 2023, very pleased 😊

harriethoyle · 05/04/2025 12:02

Well done @aberjenagain - onwards and downwards!

Just joining in! I’m going to have my first FD today. I need to lose about 2 stones (12kg). I’ve not been in the right head space for a new WOE for a long time. I’m quite small and enjoy eating so I find it difficult to eat like a bird and need to do so much planning and tracking for interest and enjoyment.

im trying the 5:2 a second time. I tried it once before but I don’t think I did it properly. It’s meant to be 1/4 of your NFD basal intake right? I did way too much last time and thought I’d failed. Do you know if you’re meant to keep your meals small or it is ok to fill up on low calorie items. For example, I’m having the aubergine curry from the 5:2 recipe book tonight and I plan to have klonji rice with it. Is bulk ok? Or counterproductive?

only having to plan on 2 days a week appeals to me. I’m also interested to explore the anti-inflammatory benefits of fasting. I have suffered from dermatitis for many years and I’m having trouble being referred to an actual dermatologist. The GP keeps prescribing various creams most of which I react to! I gave up alcohol which has made a slight difference. I’m aiming for 3 months of 5:2 to see what results I can achieve. Usually I don’t get beyond 5-6 weeks of a WOE. My DCs are older now so I’m hoping I can do it!

I don’t have any issues eating healthy foods. I probably get 30 plants a month into me already. I just eat too much for my height and quite a bit of fat. And up until January, drank like a fish!

OohMrDarcy · 07/04/2025 07:34

Morning all

Checking in for a Monday FD here. I've got roast chicken salad for dinner and maybe a soup for lunch.

Welcome @SmellyMe ! On fasting days you should be aiming for around 500 cals , but can work down to it. Bulk is fine. I tend to go carb free (or the bigger carbs anyway ) and plenty of salad /veg with enough protein for me to feel full

Darker · 07/04/2025 09:08

Flat lining at this mornings weigh-in. I only managed a FD on one day last week. Hoping for better results this week.

Was going to do one today but my lovely OH presented me with a little pastry for breakfast and I didn’t have the heart to say no.

harriethoyle · 07/04/2025 09:59

Morning all, @OohMrDarcy I am joining you today - Mon and Weds this week I think. Already hungry 😂

Delighted to be 10.3 1/2 this morning after a mini yesterday - lowest I've been for ages. I went over 10st about four months ago and just haven't been able to get it off. Going for another mini today, and also playing tennis. Good luck for today @harriethoyle , @OohMrDarcy , @SmellyMe and anyone else fasting today.

harriethoyle · 07/04/2025 12:01

Well done @TeaRose29 - and hope you win at tennis later 😄

I ate brunch at 1100. It had a tsp of raw garlic in it and my office is sooo smelly!

Alllll · 07/04/2025 16:23

I weighed in 3lb lighter than this time last week. Been on a five mile run on an empty stomach this afternoon then had chicken, potatoes and salad which is around 600calories, but I’m out for wine this evening so it won’t be a fast day. Happy with how it’s going though.

harriethoyle · 07/04/2025 16:33

That’s brilliant @Alllll - well done!

Mommybunny · 07/04/2025 16:36

Hi everyone!

Welcome @SmellyMe , well done @Alllll and @TeaRose29 .

Having a FD today and b2b tomorrow, and will probably do another one on Thursday. I was fairly undisciplined over the weekend but we have company in the form of FIL and DCs home from uni and school and we are celebrating the sunshine. I have no worries I’ll be able to cope with my FDs this week and once everyone is gone and life gets back to normal I will calm down my eating/drinking when I’m not fasting.

Good luck this week everyone!

OohMrDarcy · 07/04/2025 19:49

That's fab @Alllll congratulations!

Kitchen closed on 546 here. Done an hour walk earlier and will shortly head out for my evening walk with the dog followed by a cup of nighttime tea before bed

harriethoyle · 07/04/2025 20:02

Kitchen closing on 660 and a chickpea curry batch cooked for the freezer and later this week. Back tomorrow but probably aiming for c1000 because I have PT after work and I struggle to do that on a proper fast day.

aberjenagain · 07/04/2025 21:56

Late check in, but kitchen closed on about 510. Out for a curry tomorrow night, then debating a second FD on weds before heading on hols on Thurs - flight is early morning so my main concern is getting a good post-FD breakfast and not being hangry on the plane!

Hdjdb42 · 08/04/2025 19:31

Hi hope its okay to join you guys? Hoping to fast tomo and Friday. Is it 500 calories? What do you guys drink in the day? Any tips?

Mommybunny · 08/04/2025 19:34

Kitchen closed on 2nd b2b FD at <650, yesterday’s was a bit less.

TMI alert but does anyone else struggle with trapped wind on this WoE? I’ve been trying to eat healthier in the last week and last night’s meal was reasonably high in fibre and I’m wondering if that’s bunged me up. It’s agony!

Hello @aberjenagain good luck on your first fast day. I did my first one on Monday and will aim for #2 tomorrow.

I own the 5:2 recipe book and the fast 800 which I find really useful. Even if not fasting they’re good if you like cooking - and I do - so make eating food
pleasurable.

You can drink lots of water, fizzy water,
black tea (maybe coffee). I drank a lot on Tuesday. I seemed really dehydrated. I wasn’t doing it for a coping mechanism but felt I needed it.

500 cals is the aim for women but there is a calculator somewhere where you get your daily basal calorie intake ( what your body needs day to day not the recommended intake for a diet)- and divide by 4.

I am doing the 5:2 because the 2 day WOE appeals to me but I am really interested in the anti- inflammatory side effects. I’m hoping for an improvement in my skin.

on Monday, I ate a crab and artichoke salad around 11am. Snacked on a carrot at 1400 and had aubergine curry and Konjac rice for dinner at 1830.

I will plan and shop for tomorrow’s FD today.

good luck!
