Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Go HH! I am not in the zone, but I am nearing it. I just remembered that i have an important do at the end of April which I would like to buy a new dress for so that’s a target. I also bought a new pair of boots the other day and I tried them on with clothes that I thought they would go well with. I am currently too fat for the clothes to be flattering but I thought I looked pretty sexy for the first time in a long time. It’s a good incentive to get back on top of things and power on. I have been to the GP and will get bloods done in a couple of weeks to rule out any underlying problems. I seem to have developed a couple of late onset allergies that have been causing me a number of issues. Hope to be winning soon💪. thanks for the encouragement @harriethoyle !

harriethoyle · 10/02/2026 09:55

Sounds like your head's in the game @SmellyMe which I think is the most important bit - get planning some FD and crack on! I am living by my to do lists at the moment and they are keeping me sane 😆

Morning @harriethoyle sorry have been off the radar recently. Have been running loads and can’t manage fasting at the same time. Really enjoying it and it makes me feel generally chipper (although absolutely stacked it this morning into a load of wet mud so possibly less so today 😂). Am down on the scales and have been booze free for nearly 4months so feeling quite positive. Well done everyone powering through these miserable months, I for one am more than ready for some spring sunshine ☀️ 🤞

OohMrDarcy · 10/02/2026 12:14

Hey @harriethoyle

All fell apart here again! Work has been mental for a good year and I've not had the mental / emotional head space to fast. Unfortunately I've also eaten everything in sight and gained a fair bit again.

Have been trying to get in the space again in the last month and focussing on not snacking as often / eating less crap / drinking more water so hopefully I will be there again soon

Thank you for the poke 🙂

harriethoyle · 10/02/2026 14:05

Come and get back on the wagon with me @OohMrDarcy - it's not as lonely as when you're struggling on your own!

@MsBertieBoo I am impressed by both running and lack of booze. Positively saintly!!

Kitchen closing on 804 which makes 1403 for my b2b. I’ll take that!

I'm in for posting again whilst I get my head back in the zone @harriethoyle . Hopefully will have some good news work wise in the next couple of weeks that may make it easier!

Yesterday was a win for no snacking and got some veggies in with my left over roast dinner (always saved for office day)

Well done smashing your b2b

harriethoyle · 11/02/2026 10:28

Excellent @OohMrDarcy - I will keep my fingers crossed for work news. It is so hard when life is in flux to stick to a routine. Well done for the extra veggies!

@harriethoyle I was undermined last Saturday by DH suggesting that we went for a Chinese (I didn’t want to say no as he’s been ill and hasn’t been out for ages). I wouldn’t mind, but it wasn’t even all that good ☹️. I’ve played tennis 3 times and done a heavy gym workout in the last 2 days, and I’m going for a mini of about 800 today, which I suspect will involve lots of Greek yogurt and tuna 🤣. I’m off on my girls’ trip tomorrow and will aim to just be sensible (neither of the other two drink very much, but they both have very sweet tooths and will be wanting cake! I’m not a cake lover so will try to abstain). When I get back I’m going to do a reset and really crack on and drop these few pounds.

I hope it stops raining soon, as I really want to up my steps. Walking is the one thing that really seems to help me drop the pounds.

Anyone with me today?

harriethoyle · 11/02/2026 12:13

Do you know @TeaRose29 i frequently find Chinese meals in our area disappointing! They are much more consistent near my ILs in Northern Ireland, oddly

Afternoon all

On track for todays 'no snacking, eat something vaguely healthy' day. Have reopened nutracheck for the first time in ages and planned my day which is a bloody good start.

Good planning @TeaRose29 to get ahead of the girls trip!

TeaRose29 · 11/02/2026 13:23

Well done also on your planning @OohMrDarcy ! I've heard that Nutracheck is good. I use Carb Manager, I love it.

I'm just sorting out my outfits for my trip. I bought a lovely silk skirt in the Mint Velvet sale (size 12) and it was a bit tight round the waist when I first got it. Fits perfectly now. I'm so pleased, the scales haven't budged but I have been working out a lot, so a NSV!

harriethoyle · 12/02/2026 07:44

Fabulous NSV @TeaRose29 - enjoy your frolics!! Great to have you back and planning @OohMrDarcy 🙂

Signing in for a third FD of the week, probably coming in around 600 ish which I’ll take if I get there!

Going for the ultimate fasting test: doing an FD at the in laws house. They are FEEDERS. 😬🤣 but I’m aiming for tomorrow and Thursday, when I’ll be back to work in person as opposed to remote. Wish me luck!!

TeaRose29 · 19/02/2026 09:13

I’m back from my trip! I was pretty good, although a cream tea was consumed (at brunch Blush). Averaged 13,000 steps a day, which is probably why weight has STS.

I’m going to try for a mini today. I’ve got weight training this morning, then I’m off for a Prophilo facial (stimulates collagen, it’s brilliant).

How did you get on at the inlaws, @harriethoyle ?

harriethoyle · 19/02/2026 09:34

Failed miserably at dinner time @TeaRose29 😬🙈 so going again today. Already starving and it’s not even 10am! 🤣

I didn’t have time to record my calories properly yesterday, but I stuck to my food plan so would have come in at about 1000. Happy with that as I did a huge lifting session and smashed a few PBs! 😊 Rewarded with 1 1/4 pounds off this morning!

How did you get on, @harriethoyle ?

harriethoyle · 20/02/2026 13:58

Failed miserably on both days @TeaRose29 - all I managed was an IF both days. Argh! Starting again on Monday...

HLBug · 21/02/2026 18:11

Hi All - I was on these threads a good few years ago after my DD (nearly 9) was born. At that time BigChoc was our thread leader and a big source of inspiration and encouragement. I lost over 3 stone (from 12st down to 9st) and happily maintained for a while. Then covid came along….and I’ve slowly put it back on over the past few years. I’ve muddled through losing and gaining the same stone doing calorie counting only in the past, but it’s time to get smart and in control again. First FD will be Monday. I haven’t been on the scales for a while, but will join the Friday weigh in gang. I’m guessing I’m back up at 12st again, if not more.

Talkinpeace · 22/02/2026 13:22

Hi there @HLBug I will say hello to BigChoc for you when I next email her !

I used 5:2 to control my weight for over a decade but am now really struggling with menopause and an injury and family work timings that make fast days nigh on impossible.

I keep watch on these threads in the hopes that I'll get my mojo back when the sun comes out !
