Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

I did indeed (over)sleep !

Tonight its fish cake and poached egg with steamed veg
and having planned dinner, both of us are quite happily fasting !

harriethoyle · 06/01/2026 18:11

Kitchen closing on 799 so 816 average for my b2b days. Happy with that in light of two gym sessions yesterday and today.

Third FD Thursday before holidays on Sat - I’ll aim to be relatively virtuous tomorrow to maximise the damage undoing before it all starts again 🤣

BigChocFrenzy says hello from Germany.
She is 70 now but still does 16:8 every day and lots of walking and regular Zumba classes.
She nagged me to cut down on my drinking (yet again) and reminded me to eat LOTS of types of veg
so I shall pass the nag on to the rest of you :-)

When I first joined this group it was run by bigchocfrenzy ! She was very encouraging. Tell her hello from us. My name has changed along the journey

harriethoyle · 08/01/2026 10:10

Anyone joining me today? On third of three this week, usual tuna sandwich for lunch and am having chilli with courgetti for tea. Will come in around 650 or so which is a bit high but its SO COLD 😂

harriethoyle · 08/01/2026 20:17

Enjoy @Talkinpeace!

kitchen closing on 701. I’ll take that, I was ravenous when I got home…!

I am going to see how I get on not eating until lunch time so I can see if I break this inability to fast. 1030 is my danger zone for caving.

I am going to eat a massive bowl of porridge made only with water an salt. Then I’ll have a normal dinner and do proper FDs next week if I am successful.

despite being a Scot, I only ate porridge this way for the first time a month ago. I hated porridge as a child. My mother would make it with water and salt; so thick you could slice it. You’d get a mound of this gelatinous stuff and then she’d surround it in a moat of cold milk (which I also hated and didn’t drink/eat) 🤢🤢🤢. I always adored the smell of porridge though. I met my husband in my 20s and he made it for me with milk and cream and sugar. Funnily enough, I loved it!! I also learned to love it with just milk. I have tried it making it with water in the past but I put fruit and maybe peanut butter in it and it was always rubbish. However, as I discovered a couple of weeks ago, a pinch of salt makes it onto something completely different! Who knew! ? 🤣.

@Talkinpeace not drinking has been instrumental in my weight loss. I’m thinking 16:8 might be a good way to go for me, too. I’ll see how I do today. Good luck all.

harriethoyle · 09/01/2026 10:15

@SmellyMe your husband's porridge sounds lush but your DM's not so much 😂I had a Gregg's chicken bake for breakfast this morning, no bread at home and I felt shaky with hunger post-gym class. No regrets!! It was junk heaven!

OP posts:
Talkinpeace · 09/01/2026 13:52

@SmellyMe
Yonks ago I realised that half my calories came from booze
and now I am older I sleep even worse.
Need to get back on the wagon at least 5 days a week

SmellyMe · 12/01/2026 08:59

Going to attempt fasting today. I held out to 2pm on Friday and had my massive bowl of porridge! However, I decided to give in to the pangs later in the afternoon but didn’t go nuts.

I have also discovered that I am allergic to one of my prescriptions. I’ve seen a GP and a consultant in recent months and neither of them thought to change this one thing, everything has changed around about it!

so it would appear I have had my body pumping full of histamines for months so no wonder I have felt crap and have been unable to do FDs!!

Will see how I do today. Good luck to anyone else x

harriethoyle · 28/01/2026 08:48

Hi all, am back from skiing - which ended abruptly when someone crashed into DH and ruptured all the ligaments in his left knee 🙈🙈 surgery beckons and I am exhausted from all the running around looking after him whilst also working full time 😬

managed a mini of 700 on Monday and aiming for something similar today. Will be cutting down on my boozing because I’m currently the only driver and we live rurally and I suspect the weekend will be filled with batch cooking to make the working week easier so I’ll aim for healthy meals… but really I think survival is the name of the game for the next few weeks!!

Kitchen closing on 774 - I’ll take that. Back to fasting proper next week once things have settled a bit…

OP posts:
TeaRose29 · 31/01/2026 18:27

So sorry to hear that, @harriethoyle . Awful for both of you. Sounds like a good idea to just focus on healthy eating while your husband is laid up.

I’ve also been run ragged because DH has had a succession of health issues (horrific flu, then bad back, then stomach problem) for weeks. We’ve also had the decorators in and new carpets fitted, and I have both literally and metaphorically been doing most of the heavy lifting 🏋️‍♂️🤨

My weight has SS, but from tomorrow (conveniently 1 February) I’m going to do a 12 day detox, aiming for about 800-1000 calories AND NO BOOZE!

harriethoyle · 02/02/2026 08:23

Thanks @TeaRose29 - we battle on!

Fasting today, anyone with me?

OP posts:
SmellyMe · 02/02/2026 08:31

@harriethoyle sorry to hear about DH! I hope he’s on the mend soon.

I had one week of fasting - I think it was 3 weeks ago now- but haven’t managed again. I seem to be hungry all of the time and my belly is expanding before me!

harriethoyle · 02/02/2026 09:58

Get back on the wagon @SmellyMe - the first step is the hardest and you know it works!

Kitchen closing on 703 - back tomorrow for a b2b 💪🏻

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 03/02/2026 11:38

Good morning (just!) - anyone with me?

Am on day 2 of b2b - ham sandwich and a fishcake and broccoli for tea. Have really got to shift my holiday weight ASAP and obviously all the drama with DH meant that I have not been as virtuous post hols as I normally would be, so going to do a mini tomorrow I think and might stay dry Friday night rather than reaching for the usual wine... Wine

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 03/02/2026 19:39

Kitchen closing on 561 plus a forkful of DH spaghetti and pesto which makes c1300 for the b2b. Perfect! 👌🏻

TeaRose29 · 04/02/2026 10:23

Well done @harriethoyle . Are you doing a mini today? I am.

harriethoyle · 04/02/2026 13:30

@TeaRose29 am aiming to come in around 1200 although I had three custard creams at tea break this morning so I might have undermined my efforts before they even began 😆

Well done @harriethoyle ! In spite of the custard creams! 🤣🤣

TeaRose29 · 06/02/2026 17:13

I’m planning an emergency protein weekend: basically chicken and Greek yogurt. Boring but it works. Next Thursday/Friday I have a girls’ trip. We are staying at a 5 star hotel and will be dining out two evenings in a row, so I would like a couple of pounds off before the inevitable gain!

harriethoyle · 09/02/2026 08:37

How did you get on @TeaRose29 ?

I’m signing in for a b2b with a possible third FD on Thursday, we’ll see…
