Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Kitchen closed on 590 today. I am really surprised it has not been as hard as I thought it would be so far. It's much easier than the first time I started fasting. Do you think your body 'remembers' that you have fasted previously?

Well done both for powering through!

harriethoyle · 10/12/2025 08:55

I think once you get started @sweetgingercat you just fall back into the groove. Remembered patterns I guess!

Checking in for my day 2 b2b…

Kitchen closing on exactly 700 which gives 1311 for my b2b - almost perfect 🤣

Well done guys, you're both doing great 👏 Kitchen closed at 804. Didn't do so well today! But it's my third back to back, so I'm still happy. Might do a mini one later this week. Trying hard to lose some weight before Christmas, as I'm bound to put some on! 😬

harriethoyle · 10/12/2025 19:29

Yep I’m absolutely in damage limitation mode @Hdjdb42 - trying to undo the damage before it’s done! 🤣

Breakfast was so good this morning 🤤

Trying for a relatively virtuous day - travelling to the in laws tonight so I’ve made a pack up tea so I’m not tempted by a Burger King or similar!

It's lovely having breakfast, a real treat after fasting. Good for you with your meal prep! I'm aiming for a mini fast today. We will see what happens!

Hdjdb42 · 11/12/2025 17:50

Did another one today. Kitchen closed at 773. Looking forward to breakfast tomorrow!😋 🙌

harriethoyle · 15/12/2025 14:32

Forgot to sign in this morning but I am fasting today and tomorrow - I am HUNGRY!!

IF still working a treat, for me. I was extra strict with what I ate in my fasting window, this last month. And I lost 6 pounds. Current weight is now. 10st 2. Which, is light as I've been since I was like 18.

Any time I really focus on it, it works.

Now, I doubt I'll be long at that weight, because I'm going to stuff myself over xmas lol

harriethoyle · 15/12/2025 17:21

@dannyufcfan that’s great! If you crack on until Christmas Eve you’ll have done a lot of damage limitation which is my current plan…

A tip that's helped me that I forgot to give. During fasting hours I chew the odd piece of gum as I don't want to eat while I'm chewing.

I know, a piece of gum is technically 1 cal or something but it's well worth the trade off.

Hdjdb42 · 15/12/2025 19:17

Only done a mini fast today as I'm on my period and not feeling great. Kitchen closed closed at 811. Will have another try tomo! If I'm struggling to fast properly then I'll do a few mini fasts, as it's better than nothing. Any damage limitation before Christmas is better than none! How's it going today @harriethoyle ?

harriethoyle · 15/12/2025 20:55

Kitchen closing on 751 here - had a wrap with my veg chilli and it was worth every extra calorie 🤣 b2b tomorrow…

Signing in for my b2b. Bloody starving after the gym this morning and I forgot to pack my usual peanut butter sandwich so it's going to be a LONG haul to lunch...!

Kitchen closing on 602 - 1350 for my b2b which I’m very happy with! Yoghurt and granola for breakfast 🤤

Well done @harriethoyle 👏. Kitchen closed today at 805. Another mini fast! Not doing so well this week as I'm on my period and always hungry! But I'm being kind to myself as I know I'll smash it next week. My mouth is salivating at the Christmas food stored in my garage!

harriethoyle · 17/12/2025 08:17

Breakfast was good 😊 relative virtue today with FD sandwich for lunch and ramen tonight

Looks like the Christmas season is upon us! This week we've had a take away then cocktails another night. I've only managed 2 mini fasts this week. I'm aiming for 2 fasts next week before Christmas begins! Can't see me fasting again until Jan, when all the delicious food has gone!

harriethoyle · 20/12/2025 08:37

I’ve had two Christmas nights out in a row @Hdjdb42 and I’m weary today 🤣

I’m going to fast on Monday then that’s me done until new year although I will IF most days , I think to try and limit the damage. Will also keep on top of the exercise.

That sounds like a good plan. I'm aiming to do similar. I might be quiet on here until January! Have a merry Christmas and New year! 🥳 Enjoy it! Xx

harriethoyle · 22/12/2025 11:53

Final FD of the year, I suspect...

Anyone with me?! tumbleweed 😆

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year @Hdjdb42 - see you on the other side...

Well done! I’m going to be back on it in the new year!

sweetgingercat · 22/12/2025 23:35

Oh well done all of you. My other half left to spend Christmas with his folks on the other side of the world last week and we had Christmas celebrations and meals before he left and that, together with some nights out, totally threw me off my fast game last week. I'm now at home with my hungry teenage son (who is relishing the prospect of Christmas eating) but I'll get through it with my favourite salads here and there!
