Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Anyone fasting this week? Doesn't seem to be much activity on here?!

harriethoyle · 01/12/2025 08:46

Morning @Hdjdb42 I’m fasting today. I’ve got a work residential course tomorrow through Thursday which is really annoying from a fasting perspective! It’s impossible to fast… so I’m going to try intermittent fasting to limit the damage, stay on the lime and soda in the bar and get at least two days in next week.

It’s definitely damage limitation time!

I’m going to give it a go today.

I’ve been mulling over body composition. I tried on some clothes from my youth this weekend and I’m still too fat for them pretty much all over. I must have been very lean with muscle when I was younger as I was around the same weight or heavier from 25-30 (mostly heavier)

the weird thing is, my engagement ring is about ready to fall off. I have to put it on before the wedding ring now and it spins around a lot!

good luck to anyone on a FD today!

harriethoyle · 01/12/2025 09:20

I definitely think my shape has changed @SmellyMe - I feel denser if that makes sense?!

I failed AGAIN. Eating is the problem. In the summer, I would have a meal at around 1030-11 and again in the evening around 6pm. I had a good protein rich meal yesterday but felt
really hungry after. I had brought emergency measures to work in case that happened and had a miso soup. There were only small mugs so I had a half sized one. Still didn’t feel satiated so I had another. Then I ate my colleague’s emergency spare much noodles!!

I think I might have some underlying illness or something. I’m feeling a bit rubbish but not ill. Next week, if I’m feeling up to it, I will fast all day and eat a bigger meal in the evening.

harriethoyle · 02/12/2025 10:35

Are you eating properly the day before a FD @SmellyMe ? the other thing that helps me is bulking up with vegetables. Like a huge mound of broccoli with my cannelloni, or my fish cake. The amount helps!

I find it easier to wait until 1pm for fruit (apple and banana) and a cereal bar. Then eating a meal at 5pm. If I had something early in the morning then I'd be hungry throughout the day and I'd eat too much for a fast!

Apples are great as they really fill you up and low in calories! Water is very filling too!

I agree with this @Hdjdb42 - if I can skip breakfast and wait til lunch I find the day far easier...

Well done on your fast yesterday 💪
Day one of my fast completed today, a little high at 736. But I plan to do 2 more fasts this week to balance it out. My eldest said I look really good today and she could see my jaw line!!! Hooray!!! I'm petite so any extra fat is visible! I've only been fasting for a month (3 times a week) and look better already! So happy 😊

Hdjdb42 · 03/12/2025 19:29

Day 2 back to back fast finished at 749. Planning to do another one this week. My skin looks nicer, my spots have gone. Amazing how fasting helps the skin too! Did anyone else fast today?

sweetgingercat · 03/12/2025 22:02

Hi all, I’ve popped back in with my tail between my chunky legs because I’ve been a bit rubbish at keeping myself on

5:2 and have been eating merrily for a good long while. So…..

Back to IF and here…. This is my second day of fasting this week. I don’t want
to rush into a B2B so I’ll either stick to two this first week or do another on Friday.

it’s a bit of a surprise to see so few people here this time. Is that due to mountjaro? @harriethoyle you have done a fantastic job keeping it going. Thank you…

Augustus40 · 04/12/2025 07:16

Very happy with my first week of 16 8. Lost three pounds. Now in second week. I weigh every Tuesday. Honestly skipping breakfast has been surprisingly easy!

Same here. I thought the same as you, alot less people on here. The weight loss injections chat seems very lively. Well done for coming back 👏

Hdjdb42 · 04/12/2025 16:41

Kitchen closed at 713. That's my 3rd back to back fast this week.

harriethoyle · 05/12/2025 07:49

You’re welcome @sweetgingercat !!

anyone else finding it increasingly difficult to find FD with Christmas events starting? I was going to fast Monday but had forgotten I’ve got a carol concert and meal afterwards. So I’ll have to do Tuesday and Wednesday.

i tweaked my back on Monday at PT so haven’t been able to do weights this week. Am limited to cardio and resenting it slightly 😭 I miss lifting! I’m really hoping it’s better by Monday…

I'm sorry you've hurt yourself, I hope you feel better soon. Nothing worse than a bad back! Quite scary really! I don't have much planned this Christmas for the first time as my children are now tweens who don't want to do anything! My job has changed to wfh so there's no christmas party/meal which is sad. But at least I can focus on fasting. Just hope I don't lose motivation when the christmas food and leftovers appear!

harriethoyle · 08/12/2025 16:33

Hello all - happy new week 😄

I'm fasting tomorrow and Wednesday - anyone with me? WFH tomorrow which is not ideal but it's one of the only two days possible. Will push through!

Kitchen closed at 680. Today was a completely accidental fast! It's my day off and I had so many errands and jobs to do! Forgot to eat until very late today! Hurrah! I'm with you tomorrow for my second fast. I find it easier to do when I'm working.

sweetgingercat · 08/12/2025 19:25

Hi both, I’m fasting today and either tomorrow or Weds. I wanted to do three days but some friends have invited themselves to lunch on Thursday… so
I might have to do a mini fast and make them eat salad! 😁

sweetgingercat · 09/12/2025 00:30

Oh bad, super late supper tonight. Kitchen closed at 540, so I'm happy with that. I made a greek salad called maroulosalata for the first time and it was delicious. It involves cutting up lettuce into tiny slivers so you much more than you normally would) with a little lemon, olive oil, dill and spring onion and a fine sprinkle of feta cheese. It's definitely going on my fast day list!

harriethoyle · 09/12/2025 08:10

That sounds lovely @sweetgingercat . I’m sticking to the tried and tested today - black coffee, tuna sandwich, baked fish and broccoli.

Kitchen closing here on 611 - I’ll check in tomorrow for accountability 😬

well done @Hdjdb42 - you’re smashing it at the moment!
