Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

I’m back! It was a great break but my god, all inclusive is MURDER on the waistline 🤣🙈 already dreading tomorrow’s FD! Going for a b2b and a mini on Wednesday as I have dinners out on Thursday and Friday which is pretty disastrous 🤣

Glad you had a nice break. I'm back to fasting. Had a long break from it because I suffered with gallstones and lost weight naturally. Had the operation, fully recovered and putting weight on now! So I'm back on the horse! Today ended at 569!

harriethoyle · 12/11/2025 19:43

Great job @Hdjdb42!

Kitchen closing here on 1050, going to do a third FD tomorrow although now wfh so that makes it a lot harder 😬

Back to pre- holiday weight 🎉

Well done! 🥳
Kitchen closed at 549. Done 2 b2bs. Want to look slimmer for Christmas! 🌟 By the way I've found those kelloggs cereal bars pretty low in calories (82), for a yummy snack!

harriethoyle · 13/11/2025 18:18

Great FD @Hdjdb42 🙌🏼

kitchen closing here on 745, bit higher than I was aiming for but I went to the gym this morning and was RAVENOUS afterwards so I had porridge rather than skipping breakfast 🤣

Did a third back to back today, as I'd started late this week and didn't want to fast over the weekend! We have home made pizza tomorrow and a roast dinner with cake on Sunday! My favourite meals of the week! Kitchen closed at 592.

Oh and ps yes Superdry clothes are TINY!! My daughter loves it but I find it very depressing as I feel like an elephant!

Agree with this 👆

harriethoyle · 16/11/2025 18:52

I think Friday FD is heroic @Hdjdb42 !

I’m fasting today and tomorrow and a mini on Thursday. Anyone with me?

Hdjdb42 · 16/11/2025 19:20

I'll be fasting with you tomorrow! Had a lovely weekend of good food and a delicious chocolate cake today! Need to burn it off!

Hdjdb42 · 17/11/2025 15:42

Sorry @harriethoyle today was a bust for me! I spend alot of time running errands and being outdoors in this cold weather. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day for me! Hope your fast went well?

harriethoyle · 17/11/2025 16:12

Am likely to come in around 800 - a bit high for day 1 of a b2b but I went to the gym this morning and did weights and a full cardio session so I was RAVENOUS by 8.30am! So I had porridge which I wouldn't usually on a FD. But am pretty confident I more than burned it off...

Kitchen closing on 885. Probably aiming for c650 tomorrow but another gym session booked in for the morning so might have porridge again…

Well done @harriethoyle for yesterday. Mine was a wipe out! Today was better but a little high, kitchen closed at 840. I'm on my period so had some chocolate!

harriethoyle · 18/11/2025 18:12

Kitchen closing here on 720, so 790 average for my b2b days with two gym work outs. Already looking forward to breakfast tomorrow!

Well done all. I have not managed to fast. I have bad dermatitis on my face and I am trying yet another cream. This one appears to be causing sleep issues - burning hot at times- and I cannot fast with not enough sleep. I have lost about 1lb recently which takes me ever closer to my wedding weight (700g to go) and being in the green/mid/fair range for my height/build is 1.5kg (3Lbs) away.

Hdjdb42 · 19/11/2025 16:14

Hope you feel better soon @SmellyMe . 1lb down is good! Well done @harriethoyle 💪. Kitchen closed here at 629. That's 2 back to back done. Might try another day this week as I'd like to lose a bit before Christmas! 🎄

Hdjdb42 · 20/11/2025 21:35

Done a third back to back today. Kitchen closed at 689. Did anyone else fast today?

harriethoyle · 20/11/2025 21:41

@SmellyMe that sounds awful, poor you. Get well soon!

@Hdjdb42 i was on NFD today but did 4 miles on the cross trainer this morning which offset the cake at elevenses 🤣

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 24/11/2025 09:06

Checking in for a Monday fast - work course tomorrow and Wednesday which is fully catered so that will be tricky to fast at. Might try for a second on Thursday.

Failed miserably at yesterday’s fast … there was apple pie and ice cream to be finished from the weekend! 🤣🙈

I love apple pie, I would have crumbled at that too! 🙈 Had apple pie and custard last Sunday after a roast dinner! I'm fasting today!

Hdjdb42 · 25/11/2025 20:46

Day 1 of fasting today. Kitchen closed at 618. Well done to all who fasted today!

Hdjdb42 · 26/11/2025 16:24

Kitchen closed at 616 that's 2 back to backs done. Find it easier to do when working!

harriethoyle · 26/11/2025 16:30

Well done @Hdjdb42 - a great effort!

Kitchen closed at 724. My third back to back this week. Feeling proud 🙌 and hopeful this stone will drop soon! Did anyone else fast today? This thread is very quiet compared to last year! This thread used to be so busy and fill up quickly! Did most fasters leave to use the weight loss injections?
