Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

@MsBertieBoo I am ALL over that rice. Going to look it up now..

@tryingtomakesenseof there are loads of guides online with takeaway food calories. Even if you can't find an exact match you could go eg to the Nando's guide and see how much their peri peri burger is. Myfitnesspal is also good for guestimating calories ie if I have fries at the pub I will input a large McDonalds fries for that.

Thanks @MsBertieBooi think you’re right, the fizzy doesn’t help me!

tryingtomakesenseof · 16/10/2025 10:49

@harriethoyleI never even thought of looking up something similar 🙈 thanks for the tip. I use MFP.

Plan to have a protein shake if required otherwise I will power on to the evening with diluting juice.

tryingtomakesenseof · 17/10/2025 10:52

2nd FD down 😀 closed at around 650 cals. Happy with that.

next mission is to not go crazy over the NFD’s

MsBertieBoo · 17/10/2025 13:57

Wooo way to go @tryingtomakesenseof . I meant to ask - how was the comedy thing the other night? Did you see anyone good? Spag bol tonight here with garlic bread (and probably some red wine!) so I have had a hard boiled egg and some miso soup for lunch - front loading my virtue as @harriethoyle would say 😁

Thank you! It was a great night thanks. There was 7 acts including Shazia Mirza. The others I didn’t know but they were brilliant too.

2 not so great NFD’s (not horrific either though) but hoping I can make up for it during the week. Trying to at least be sensible and not snack. Any snacks I am adding onto the end of meals instead.

FD tomorrow here I come! NSV is that I’m feeling a little less bloated.

MsBertieBoo · 21/10/2025 16:37

FD today after a dreadful weekend and yesterday as I felt terrible (too much wine AGAIN) and mainlined absolute crap (pizza, garlic bread and chips featured 😂). Miso soup for lunch and then a jacket potato for dinner. Anyone else fasting?

harriethoyle · 21/10/2025 21:42

Just about to go on hols @MsBertieBoo and am definitely demob happy. Wine and a chicken wrap for tea 🤣🙈 I’ll be weeping when the holiday’s over!!

tryingtomakesenseof · 21/10/2025 21:56

I didn’t fast yesterday so fasting today instead. I’m almost caving in 🙈 but going to try and settle to sleep now.

I can already see changes to my tummy shape - it’s gross right now but guess it’s good it’s changing shape.

tryingtomakesenseof · 21/10/2025 21:57

@harriethoyleoooo happy holidays!! Where are you off to and for how long?

harriethoyle · 02/11/2025 15:46

I’m back! It was a great break but my god, all inclusive is MURDER on the waistline 🤣🙈 already dreading tomorrow’s FD! Going for a b2b and a mini on Wednesday as I have dinners out on Thursday and Friday which is pretty disastrous 🤣

OP posts:
SmellyMe · 02/11/2025 17:03

Hello hello! Welcome back! Did you have a good holiday @harriethoyle?

I’ve been wondering about this thread and what’s happening… I have not fasted for a long time but I am pleased to report that I actually haven’t gained weight. I think this is really bizarre. I am convinced my scales are broken! I still have a stone/6kg to lose and I wanted to get 2kg off before Xmas. I have loaded the fridge with fast-appropriate food so I’m hoping I can step once more unto the breach.

i did make to the gym today so that is always inspiring. Good luck for the week!

harriethoyle · 02/11/2025 21:24

Welcome back @SmellyMe we can brave the first day back together 🤣🤣🤣 I’m about to throw together some tuna and light mayo for tomorrow’s packed lunch and I have PT at 7am so it might feel a looooong day 🤣🙈

TeaRose29 · 03/11/2025 18:15

Welcome back @harriethoyle and @SmellyMe ! I have also been off the thread, due to a couple of trips away. DH and I went to Amsterdam for our wedding anniversary and there was a lot of lovely food and wine, but also loads of walking, so no weight gain. Then I went to stay with my daughter, again some nice food but then she dragged me round the Trafford Centre, so I think I walked it off! (And I certainly came back with a lighter bank account 🤣).

I'm planning a mini on Wednesday, as I have PT in the afternoon. Today has been a good NFD, with a gym session and plenty of protein, but I might have a glass of wine tonight. Good luck both for this week 💪💪

tryingtomakesenseof · 03/11/2025 22:42

Wow I just checked back today after spectacularly falling off and see that @harriethoyleonly posted yesterday after my last post. Is that a sign? 😂

Right. I’m back on it. FD tomorrow. Cheese omelette for dinner. Diluting juice otherwise.

any tips for stopping headaches? Wondering about electrolyte sachets? I have Celtic salt in the house which is supposed to do the same thing..

tryingtomakesenseof · 03/11/2025 23:06

Also, does anyone make allowances for totm? Or do you just power on?

harriethoyle · 04/11/2025 09:07

Thanks @TeaRose29 @tryingtomakesenseof - it's definitely a sign!! Yesterday was HARD but finished on 747 and doing a b2b today. Already been to the gym and have FD compliant lunch and dinner planned.

I just tend to power through at my TOTM but I am not that affected tbh, I've never really craved chocolate or anything so I can't use that as an excuse!

Kitchen closed today on 855 giving just about 1640 for the b2b. It’s been hard!!

OP posts:
WeightLossForWalking · 09/11/2025 18:40

Just a quick check-in to say that after sitting on 10 stone for a MONTH, I pulled out all the stops and am in the 9 stone 11 range at last. I hope to stay under 10 stone from now on. Next stop - under 9 stone 10!

harriethoyle · 09/11/2025 18:45

Amazing @WeightLossForWalking - that’s a great result!

I’m back on the wagon of virtue after a spectacularly boozy weekend- tempted to go for a full week and weekend off the booze to get things back on track, we have a blissfully empty weekend next weekend and it would do me a lot of good…

b2b tomorrow and Tuesday if anyone’s joining me?

OP posts:
SmellyMe · 10/11/2025 09:26

Morning all! I’m going to try and fast today! I didn’t manage last week. I decided to finish up some yogurt on Monday morning and that put the whole week out.

So, here goes! Good luck @harriethoyle and anyone else giving it a go. 4lbs/2kg by Xmas is my target. Then I shall eat what I like then aim to lose 4kg + any gain in the new year. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

harriethoyle · 10/11/2025 20:13

How did you get on @SmellyMe ? Kitchen closed here on 713 and hasn’t been too bad. Tomorrow might be trickier as day two though 🤣

OP posts:
SmellyMe · 10/11/2025 22:16

I totally caved @harriethoyle! I think I was too cold. I had a good FD meal but about an hour later, juice and coffee hadn’t helped and I had a sandwich. I had a light dinner, though. Perhaps I will have had a sort of mini. It would be <1200 cals.

well done you 💪🏼

harriethoyle · 11/11/2025 08:30

You can pick up a FD this week @SmellyMe - 4 week days left!

signing in for day 2 of the b2b… 🤞🏼

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 11/11/2025 19:39

Kitchen closing on 785 which gives 1498 for the b2b. Back on Thursday for a third FD to capitalise on my week of virtue 🤣
