Anyone up for supporting each other with 36 hour fasts?

As a midlife / perimenopausal woman these worked brilliantly for me in the summer and I managed to lose my first stone. I'm completely convinced by the health benefits and would like to get back in to them, but can't break through the struggle at the 21hr-ish mark. OMAD is no problem, I just want to hit the 36-hour fast.

Would anyone like to buddy up for some mutual encouragement?

What happened after you lost that stone. Did it stay off?

Peae · 14/12/2024 23:04

Yes, lost another couple of pounds.

What is driving you to break the fast?

What kind of food are you eating. When I am eating low carb high fat, so my metabolism is happily burning fat, I find I'm really not hungry. When I'm busy and active I can easily fast (while drinking plenty of water )

It's more usually boredom rather than hunger that drives me to eat.

Peae · 15/12/2024 19:53

There are two things I have to overcome. The hunger pangs when the ghrelin peaks, and secondly just the habit of associating times of the day/week with the “treat” of eating. Hope that makes sense.

Hello. I might be interested in this. I generally do 16:8 or 18:6 every day but I've got about 7 pounds that I'm just struggling to lose. I'm quite short, so my daily calories are quite low and I can't see how I can really go much lower each day.

I saw your post this morning but was nervous about posting (and have name changed for this thread) as I know there can be strong feelings/comments from people about fasting!

When are you thinking of starting? What pattern are you thinking of doing?

What's your current daily calories and/or do you mind sharing your height and current/target weight? (No worries if not!)

Peae · 15/12/2024 21:16

Hi, I would love some support @Sunflowers84 . I was intending to do today, but after making a start on the Christmas food shop this morning I ended up eating and doing 18:6.

I follow the approach of Fung/Ramos and thus don't count calories. I would love to break my current plateau and break past the 12st 10lb mark.

I'd like to try a 36 hour fast starting Monday evening if you're up for it??

Great, yes - let's do it! What kind of time will you start fasting on Mon? I guess it will work best to support each other if our timings are pretty similar? I can actually be quite flexible about what time I have dinner tomorrow.

Sunflowers84 · 15/12/2024 21:25

Also, do you have any recommendations of podcasts or books linked to the benefits of this?

Peae · 15/12/2024 21:44

I have found the Fasting Method and Fast, Feast, Repeat helpful at different time. I don't listen religiously though, I just pick and choose episodes that interest me.
The Feel Better, Live More episodes with either Jason Fung or Pradip Jamnadas were what got me curious about fasting in the first place.

I'm hoping to start my fast before 6pm tomorrow if that works for you? Please don't feel obliged to 'be here' for me, although I would love the companionship. (I might check-in with this thread throughout Tuesday for accountability).

Sunflowers84 · 15/12/2024 21:55

Yes, I think it will really help to check in here to encourage each other. Your thread was such good timing for me, as I had been thinking about doing this.

I'll aim to finish dinner around 6pm but might be slightly later. I'll update here with when I start my fast.

Do you have any tips from when you did this earlier in the year?

How often are you thinking of doing this?

Peae · 16/12/2024 07:41

At this stage I would be happy to just get through a single fast, psychologically. Before I was doing one a week, but I think two a week is recommended.

Tips.
The more your diet is already full of satiating foods like avocado, olive oil, whole foods and lean protein, the easier it will be for your body to switch to burning fat for energy and not send you signals to eat for energy. (I am definitely not prepared in this way right now!).

Plan to keep busy during your fast.

This is more controversial, but better to eat a small snack of, say, olives and oily fish if it keeps your 'fast' going for a bit longer. Personally, I feel that this breaks your fast but for the psychological benefit I do it if needed.

Finally, make sure you're eating plenty on your non-fasting days. You don't want to damage your body through lack of nutrients or damage your metabolism through lack of calories.

How do you feel? I feel excited to do this with someone, as I've always done them alone. I hope we get one or two more joining us today.

Hi, I'd like to join in. I'm not sure I can do it, but I'd like to try. I'm a huge emotional eater and this trips me up everytime. The most I've done is a 20 hour fast. I sometimes have coffee with a teaspoon of full fat cream to keep me going, as I'm doing it more for weight loss than autophagy at this point. What time do you think you will have your last meal before fasting starts today?

Peae · 16/12/2024 09:37

There’s stuff about electrolytes too, but I’ve never found I needed them on a 36.

This recent episode was helpful,

Welcome @EasternEcho ! I’m aiming for about 6pm. How about you?

OP posts:
EasternEcho · 16/12/2024 10:36

6 is fine with me. I'll do OMAD today, and restart at 6.

Sunflowers84 · 16/12/2024 13:49

Hi both. Due to change of plans, it looks like I might be starting around 7pm (possibly 7.30pm).

But I wouldn't eat breakfast at 6am on Wed anyway, so it doesn't really matter. (I'd still like to be as close as possible to your timings though, so that we can support each other.)

Peae · 16/12/2024 15:08

I think a few hours apart isn’t a problem, just good if we’re all fasting on the Tuesday?

OP posts:
EasternEcho · 16/12/2024 16:10

Oh I had forgotten that I'm ahead of UK time by an hour. So I will be starting my fast at 5 p.m. UK time, but that shouldn't really matter.

Sunflowers84 · 16/12/2024 16:35

Thanks for all the tips you gave. Sorry, another question - when you did this in the summer, did you just drink water? Or did you also have black coffee/tea or herbal teas?

I'm excited about doing this and tomorrow works really well around family, etc.

Peae · 16/12/2024 17:31

I don't drink hot drinks, so I was only drinking water. This month I'm afraid I'm back addicted to Diet Coke so I will be "dirty fasting" with whatever cans I need to keep the caffeine withdrawals at bay. You know what? At this point I'm ok with that. It will be a massive success for me if I can prove to myself that I can get through the day without eating.
So, black tea or coffee are best, but if you need a splash of milk or whatever to get you through, I say do it. (This is controversial, some reckon only clean fasts count).

TotallyTwisted · 16/12/2024 17:36

Disordered eating is cool, kids! Hmm Seriously, do not do this. It is not good for you.

November10000 · 16/12/2024 17:37

Count me in too if I may join.
Though I will have to start at 7pm as I have just seen the thread and haven't started making dinner yet.
I have had success with fasting in the past and find it great for shifting those stubborn few lbs.

Peae · 16/12/2024 17:42

I really don't think it matters too much when we start, so long as we have a bit of encouragement tomorrow. I won't be breaking my fast at 6am on Wednesday either :)

Ok everyone, I believe as we finish eating we enter the 'anabolic phase'. Our bodies are converting the nutrients from our last meal in to tissue growth and our pancreases are producing insulin to convert sugars from the meal in to energy sources, storing excess as body fat.

Good Luck @Sunflowers84, @EasternEcho and @November10000!

Finished dinner at 6.45 and kitchen is now closed - bar tea with a little milk and lots of water - until my early lunch at 11am on Wednesday.
