Anyone up for supporting each other with 36 hour fasts?

As a midlife / perimenopausal woman these worked brilliantly for me in the summer and I managed to lose my first stone. I'm completely convinced by the health benefits and would like to get back in to them, but can't break through the struggle at the 21hr-ish mark. OMAD is no problem, I just want to hit the 36-hour fast.

Would anyone like to buddy up for some mutual encouragement?

@blueshoes what’s your fasting experience so far?

@blueshoes what’s your fasting experience so far?

I have been doing 16-8 with calorie restriction badly and falling off the wagon all over the place.

Lost 9 pounds in 2-3 months but put half of that back on over Christmas 😭

I need a short sharp kick.

Peae · 27/12/2024 21:38

I don't think anyone could really predict how much, if any, weight you'd lose with a one-off 36-hour fast.
It sounds as though fasting was working for you before, just get back on the horse with 16:8 or maybe 18:6 or even OMAD - whichever you can be confident of doing.

Why do you restrict your calories though? Do you worry about lowering your metabolism?

@Peae thanks for replying. A 36 hour fast sounds like just the thing I need for a week long indulgence, however much weight I lose. I suspect it will be mostly water over such a short period.

Not sure about lowering my metabolism with calorie restriction. I have not been taking a scientific approach. I just want to reach my target weight in the fastest possible way and maintain with sporadic indulgences.

Peae · 27/12/2024 22:09

Sounds like you’re going to give the 36 a go? 😊Do you know when?

I'd love to join! I Am currently 25 hrs into a 36 hr fast. I also did one on Dec 22-23. I usually try to have one per week but can't always manage it so very glad I found this thread! I look forward to reading the whole thread from the beginning tomorrow

Very good question. Thank you for making me think about this.

I think I shall start tonight from midnight, after I have scoffed my sticky choc cake with brandy cream. It sadly will not eat itself.

Tomorrow is good to be fasting because my feeder dh is away. This 36 hour fast is just a circuit breaker. I intend to do more feasting as have relatives staying over the New Year.

I will join you if you are starting tomorrow evening, on my final stretch 😂

Peae · 27/12/2024 23:05

Well done @LuckyLuchi , good luck.

And you too @blueshoes, theres no way I’d manage it after that final meal, at that time of night!

So pleased to have found this thread. I've been fasting on and off for years. But not really extended fasting. However I recently tried 36hr fasts - have done about 4 a couple of months ago. Only one a week but was planing from Jan to try and increase to 2-3 a week. Not possible right now as everybody home from work and uni. Can't wait to restart. Big follower of Fung and Ramos too - their Facebook group is quite good too. Megan calls fasting 3 times a week therapeutic fasting - which is 3 x at least 24hrs fast. Glad to have found others doing similar things

fastingaway · 28/12/2024 09:37

@Peae I love the idea of putting the fasting days into the diary. Had been thinking the same as Jan has me at the office a fair bit. I haven't attempted a full day fast at the office yet so thinking of doing the fasts when wfh.

I'd love to lose more weight as with perimenopause have ground to a halt but also will always do some kind of fasting for health reasons.

Peae · 28/12/2024 10:52

Hey @fastingaway you are very welcome! If I've got a busy day at work I find it easier to fast. But if I've got a slow or tricky day I find it harder, as I'd normally turn to food to comfort myself. Definitely want to get in to 36s regularly for the reasons you state.

@LuckyLuchi and @blueshoes how are you both doing?

blueshoes · 28/12/2024 12:29

OP, thanks for asking. Slept through the first 8 hours, so that was easy. Now going grocery shopping with dd (will stay away from impulse buys). I am definitely a comfort eater at work so being busy and active helps a lot to make the time fly by.

Triggers are sitting at my desk and working on the PC on a dull piece of work or admin. Or being stressed with deadlines. Too many of those around. Also mnetting 😂

Another 26 hours to go.

Fabulouslyunfabulous · 28/12/2024 20:06

I decided to fit in another fast to end 2024 the way that I mean to go on. Started at 7 tonight.

Ive ordered a gorgeous dress for NYE which won’t allow for bloating to spur me on.

Sunflowers84 · 28/12/2024 20:43

Hope it goes well @Fabulouslyunfabulous

I'm really keen to fit in a fast day soon, but it's tricky with family plans and food that needs eating! I might try to do from tomorrow (Sun) eve until Tuesday morning?

Fabulouslyunfabulous · 29/12/2024 12:17

That’s what I worried about, food waste!
I’m determined that we won’t have anymore crap in the house from the 1st but there’s still food that needs eating.

Peae · 29/12/2024 14:34

I am currently booked in to a spa hotel with the remaining sweets and cheeses from home. I’ve put weight on this week and tipped back in to the 13st bracket. Whatever, it went on quickly, it’ll come off quickly.

Feeling super-motivated to lost 2st in the next year, which is just over 2lb a month and feels very do-able. Would be amazing to be under 11st next Christmas.

(Sorry, thinking out loud again, but feeling so excited).

How's your fast day gone @Fabulouslyunfabulous?

I finished eating at 7.30pm this evening and aiming to fast until Tuesday morning. I'll try to check in here a couple of times tomorrow for my own accountability! It seems to help me to know that you all 'know' my intentions! (Funny isn't it, but just telling all of you my plan seems to help me to stick with it!)

Sunflowers84 · 29/12/2024 21:13

Me again! I have a question for those of you who are more experienced fasters ... do any of you also do strength training as well? Have you found it ok to do this on fasting days? I do a Caroline Girvan workout at home most days (but my weights are not particularly heavy). There seems to be so much advice about eating enough protein in the hours after a workout but I'm wondering how that works on fasting days?

I did a morning CG workout, as usual, on my fasting days last week and felt fine in terms of energy, but wondering if not eating (especially protein) will mean it's a bit of a 'wasted' workout? Any thoughts?

Peae · 29/12/2024 21:30

Yes, lift. I listened to something recently that said the protein thing was over-thingyed (sorry, perimenopause and I can’t remember the word). The argument was, that if it was all about protein, most men in the US would be body builders. It’s the muscle damage (progressive lifting) that matters. Just drink plenty of water.

If it leaves you famished you’ll know for next time. I’ve learned not to swim with no meal in sight!

IANAD.

That's interesting. Thank you!

TennisToday · 30/12/2024 10:14

Watching with interest.

Currently doing 2 x a week 24 hour fasts. And then 2 x a week 6-18, but once kids are back I would like to change one of the 24 hrs to a 36 hrs. Just need to work it around the kids and can’t start while kids are off school/hobbies.

Can I ask what people have as-

  • there last meal before doing a 36 hr fast
  • the meal they break the fast with?

I know if I start a 24 hr fast with having just eaten something sweet it makes it sooooo much harder!!!

I need something to eat that makes it easier. Any suggestions???

TennisToday · 30/12/2024 10:15

Garrrr their not there!!

Peae · 30/12/2024 10:30

I think the more (healthy) fats and protein and the less UPFy carbs and junk your diet contains in general, the easier the fasts are. I try to eat a last meal focused on things like avocado, olive oil, beans, lentils etc.

LittlePearl · 30/12/2024 11:05

I’d be interested in joining you / supporting others, and getting support.

I’ve fasted on and off for years and am convinced of the health benefits. I usually do some kind of time restricted eating though have been less disciplined recently and would like to correct that.

For a while I did one 40 hour fast a week and I feel as though it helps press the reset button in terms of my tendency to overeat. My problem is that I really feel the cold when I’m fasting, plus it’s hard going to bed hungry!

Currently eating up leftovers and battling a nasty cold so I won’t be fasting properly until we get into the new year but after that, count me in.

Peae · 30/12/2024 11:59

Welcome @LittlePearl !

How’s it going @Sunflowers84 ?
