Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

I'm planning my first fast day in ages tomorrow. Wish me luck!!

OohMrDarcy · 21/08/2024 20:01

Kitchen closed on around 509 today. Been very good and had a mountain of water so happy with that

CrabPuff · 21/08/2024 20:06

Low carb lunch - I had one the other day that was prawns with Marie Rose sauce and iceberg, 80s style on an avocado half.

miso salmon with Japanese cucumber salad is good - or chicken and cauliflower mash. I make it with the hand blender to be quick, with lots of butter and garlic

mushroom soup with cream.

Lucylurker · 21/08/2024 20:54

FD here as well, nearly done. I find Monday and Wednesday work well for me, like crab says it’s over early in the week. Not losing a lot of weight but still is going in the right direction I may look at this b2b to see if that will give it a kick.
hope everyone doing ok.

Castlerigg · 21/08/2024 23:55

Kitchen closed on 10,000,000. Work lunch was delicious (homemade chicken burger with some kind buttermilk batter, and fries). Then butter chicken for dinner.

I found out M&S cherry liqueurs are 50 kcal apiece. After I'd had three.

Much needed FD tomorrow!

CrabPuff · 22/08/2024 07:19

I swerved the hot choc last night so feeling very virtuous.

I agree on the 5:2 loss feeling slow but actually being effective! I assume a pound a week and given how much less thought you have to give to calories it’s worth it. I cannot sustain low carb or 1200 cals a day for more than a month and it makes socialising so hard.

Katypp · 22/08/2024 07:44

Day 4 of 7-day holiday today, heading to the city. So far have stayed well within calories (but ignoring FDs obviously).
Not really making g much effort but it's so hot and obviously lots less lying about, so smashing it so far.

Whatapickle78 · 22/08/2024 09:16

Morning!

Still in school hols here and have totally fallen off the wagon as a result… annoying after losing nearly 3kg in the two months leading up to holidays!

Starting again today - two coffees in and now off for a mild gym session before work. Planning crunchy tuna salad for lunch.

Hoping the kids not being around (at clubs today for first time all summer) will help me keep on track!!

good luck everyone else and happy fasting xx

MelodyMalone · 22/08/2024 09:19

Attempting first fast day in ages. It's going ok so far, but it's only nine o'clock 😄

TeaRose29 · 22/08/2024 10:13

@CrabPuff please could you provide the recipe for miso chicken and cucumber salad? Sounds delicious. I get frozen cauliflower rice from Tesco which saves all the faff and is a good filler.

seaduck · 22/08/2024 10:25

Fast day here as well. Last day before we go on holiday next week, not going to fast on holiday because well, holiday...
That article above is reassuring about the losses not being consistent. I have definitely found this to be the case!

Castlerigg · 22/08/2024 21:04

Fast day for me too, except I sabotaged it at the last minute because I was grumpy. Not hungry particularly, a bit lacking in energy, but really pissed off. No idea why, so I'm thinking maybe blood sugar related. So I ate twice pieces of white chocolate fudge. I think I'm on about 700, so that's not too bad.

seaduck · 22/08/2024 21:26

Yeah me too @Castlerigg . Couldn't resist a last minute spring roll, but think I'm under 700. Took some extra will power today as out of office on for holiday, really really wanted a glass of wine to celebrate.

CrabPuff · 22/08/2024 22:40

Tearose29 - here is the link to the salmon recipe
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/miso-marinated-salmon

I actually haven’t tried their cucumber salad in the link but I can’t find the link to my own so I’ve copied it out:

1 large cucumber
100ml rice vinegar
110g caster sugar
big handful of dill
seasoning; salt and pepper

Peel and slice the cucumber as thinly as possible (I use a mandolin). Peeling is a must! I also remove the seeds but that’s optional

Heat the vinegar in a small pan over a gentle heat, pour in the sugar, stir slowly and regularly and remove from heat once all the sugar has dissolved and allow to cool.

Finely chop the dill. Lay a quarter of the cucumber slices in a high sided dish (I use a soufflé dish for 4 - not a ramekin, a big one)

spread some of the dill over the cucumber then put the second quarter on and add dill, doing all four layers then pour the vinegar sugar mix over and leave to marinade for at least an hour but ideally longer.

Drain all the liquid (a lot of it) and season lightly before serving with miso salmon.

Ever wondered what to do with the Japanese paste miso? This variation of a classic Nobu fish dish is a great place to start, from BBC Good Food.

Good work on the fasting @CrabPuff. I would usually have done yesterday but had a friend coming over for dinner.

Doing second FD of the week today then will do Tues and Thurs next week I think. Although could attempt a b2b Tues and Weds then do Friday as well, will see how disciplined I feel as period is due any day now.

Today I am planning to hold out until an early tea which is likely to be some kind of beef/veg noodle dish.

Hope everyone has had a good week and that there is a a chilled white wine in all of our weekends!

seaduck · 23/08/2024 08:36

0.3kg loss 😊. Miss the first few weeks where it fell like it was nearly 1kg a week but really glad it's still going down!

TeaRose29 · 23/08/2024 09:32

Thank you @CrabPuff , I really appreciate those recipes. They sound delicous and good for FDs, and well within my (limited) abilities!

@Castlerigg , I think you were very restrained to just have 2 pieces of chocolate!

Well done @seaduck , it is all in the right direction!

Well I weighed in this morning and am 10.00 1/4, which is 1.75 pounds off in 4 days, so I’m pretty happy! I’ve done some really heavy gardening this week, which has probably helped. Going for a mini of around 800 today:

B = just tea and coffee
L = protein shake and one slice wholemeal toast
D = fillet steak and salad

I’m playing tennis this afternoon so can’t eat too little or I will have no energy. I’m going shopping then out to dinner with my daughter and her boyfriend tomorrow, so calories (and chilled white wine) will be consumed 😊. I’ve finished the exam marking thank God 🙏 so next week will be a better one for fasting.

Good luck for today @berryhand , is anyone else joining us?

MonkeyTennis34 · 23/08/2024 10:04

I'm now 9st 11lb so I've put on half a pound over last 2 weeks.

1 week we were on holiday and the other had 2 family birthdays in it so I'm not complaining.

I've now caught the coughing/fatigue virus my son had so have very little appetite....but know I must eat.

We've booked to see a show in London tomorrow so I'm just resting today and hoping for the best.

Well done to everyone who's losing, fasting.

CrabPuff · 23/08/2024 19:45

NFD today - fairly low appetite today and also yesterday quite an upset tummy - FDs sometimes do that to me!

either way - good scale victories to my fellow 5:2ers and hell YES to the chilled white wine. And everything else. I do love a weight loss plan where you don’t have to constantly think about it at the most fun times.

Monkey - I was v under the weather last week and didn’t eat much. I used it, really on the FD since I’m often pretty hungry. Felt better by the NFD luckily and took all the drugs available.

Castlerigg · 24/08/2024 22:20

Took DS away for a couple of days, so I relaxed about what I ate. Didn't go mad, but didn't particularly make any effort to keep it healthy or low cal. Back home now though, so back on it tomorrow. Not a FD but definitely a "no shit food" day.

OohMrDarcy · 25/08/2024 07:46

Morning all

Going to attempt a Sunday FD today...

Think I'm going to do a chicken casserole for dinner, after yesterday's rain I'm feeling autumnal!

OohMrDarcy · 25/08/2024 21:30

Kitchen closed on 488

OohMrDarcy · 26/08/2024 21:05

Weighed in this morning at 97.2kg which means a loss of 0.9kg this week 🙂

MonkeyTennis34 · 27/08/2024 08:08

@OohMrDarcy well done, that's great!

I'm aiming to do a b2b Wednesday/Thursday ....we shall see.

I tried in some bikinis yesterday for my holiday and actually felt really confident in them. Especially with my trusty beach throw on top!
