Fast 800 meal ideas

I'm starting the Fast800 tomorrow (but with a little flexibility). I will eat the same evening meal as my children every night, but then have a 200-400 calorie meal around lunchtime. It may mean me hitting 1000 some days, but I'm not concerned about that.

I am asking if anyone has any favourite low calorie meals. I have 3 of the Fast800 books and have been searching through them but thought someone might have speciific easy/go to meals.

Apologies if this is insensitive with Dr Mosley's death, but that has pushed me to do something after so many weeks/months of being unhappy as life is way too short. I saw him record his podcast 2 weeks ago and have since bought and am reading his Just One Thing book ❤️

Does anyone have any quick ideas for when you are on the go? I will finish my very active work at 11 today then straight for a massage. I think I will need something to tide me over as I won't get home til about 1.00/1.15.

I last ate earlier at 5pm due to work last night and have done a lot of activity since then and I think I may need food. I was hoping to make it a regular longer fast on Thursday tea time to Friday later brunch but not sure if I may need to do the opposite. It would mean a 20 hour fast! I'm not sure I'm ready for that.

Picoloangel · 14/06/2024 08:55

@Breathmiller could you do a protein shake or maybe a tub of cottage cheese and some nuts?

I have this problem usually - I go from one busy activity to another and don’t have time to eat.

vincettenoir · 14/06/2024 10:48

@Breathmiller you can pick up a protein bar in a lot of newsagents / supermarkets.

Breathmiller · 15/06/2024 08:56

Thanks everyone for the ideas.

I ended up (inadvertently) doing a 24 hour fast. Easier than I would have thought especially as I was fairly active for part of it up, til about 23hours then I felt...faded! But remarkably water revived me more than I imagined. I would perhaps do another one but on a day when I had less to do and I would drink much more water.

But...I then ate A LOT. Not sure if it was because I was hungry but more just that Friday night/birthday blowout thing. I did make some better choices of food than I might on a Friday night (sweet potato fries instead of normal and roasted med veg with my burger) but it was a lot of calories (I added them up today) and things like sugar etc that I have avoided this week.

But, I'm actually okay with this. Part of my "take this lightly approach". It won't be as much every Friday. I'm working next Saturday so I won't do it next Friday and it won't be a birthday so...meh. I would normally be annoyed I had "failed" and I don't feel that.

And if I add up my whole weekly total and average over the last 5 days its obviously a LOT lower than it would have been had I not been fasting during the week.

Still undecided what to do today. I will either fast again or just take a lighter approach to a healthy eating day and start again properly on Monday. I'll see how I feel.

Hope you all have a good weekend.

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 15/06/2024 21:55

Have just finished reading this thread, found it really motivating, and thank you for all the food suggestions. I'm starting monday. MM was so inspirational, I'm gutted he passed and so very sad for his family. I'm also grateful for his life's work that we can continue to benefit from.

I've been doing a monthly fast for the last couple of years, usually a 24 or 36hr, but it has absolutely no effect on my weight, unsurprisingly. But it does give me the absolute confidence I can manage on a lot less food.

I'm probably about 4 stone over the weight I'd like to be, peri-meno, started HRT recently which has made a difference to my energy levels already. I dislike cooking, don't need a lot of variety, quite happy eating the same stuff day in day out. DH preps the evening meal as he prefers variety in his food, then I cook it for the both of us. It's the only meal that varies for me, left to my own devices I eat the same things all the time. I'm a bit time poor, busy job, dog that needs walking, DH with cancer so lots of hospital appointments etc etc. You all know what it's like I'm sure. Somehow I'm always leaving my health at the bottom of the pile and eating to feel better - which doesn't actually work 😬

I think that my rough plan at the moment is to go OMAD in the week so I can continue eating the evening meal with DH, and then I might go up to 1000 cals at the weekends if needed. I don't drink so that's not for alcohol, most of my socialising tends to involve food, especially in the summer.

I'll do some initial weighing/calorie counting to get a feel for how much to eat to stay inside the calorie allowance with my favorite meals. I'm hoping that I can continue to eat the same things and just reduce portions. I need to get much better at drinking water, so that will be a focus. I tend to drink lots of tea with sugar and I love it so I'll be switching that out for herbal tea and hot water during the day and will save my beloved yorkshire decaf with milk and sugar as a treat after dinner. DH will be 24 or 36hr fasting one day a week so I might join him on those.

I think a couple of people have mentioned protein powders - any recommended brands? I'd be looking for a good quality powder with no sugars, sweeteners and colorings etc. I'd be grateful for any recommendations. I figure I could use a protein shake as a quick and filling meal replacement on occasion, and add to yogurt if I need to hit a protein goal.

TIA

Welcome @OttersAreMySpiritAnimal

It sounds as if you have a lot on your plate. I sympathise massively with perimenopause- it left me a shell of myself with terrible anxiety, insomnia etc but HRT made a real difference to me too.

I have been doing IF on and off for years but I think the key is making sure that you don’t overeat in the window when you’re eating. I’m doing 18-6 now.

Im doing 1000 calories but tend to always over estimate in My Fitness Pal so I suspect it’s quite a bit nearer to 900. I do cook but fairly quick and easy things and meal prep for the days I’m at work - for lunches I generally do boiled egg/salmon flakes/cottage cheese with a bit of quinoa and throw in edamame, sweetcorn, tomatoes, pomegranate, cucumber or sometimes I have chicken or lentil soup.

An omelette with cottage cheese whisked in is lovely - very thick and fluffy or sometimes I do a couple of poached eggs with some fresh cherry tomatoes which I cook on the hob in a tiny amount of olive oil.

I don’t know if my regime is working as I can’t weight bear at the moment so can’t weigh myself. I am usually v v active with lots of walking and gym etc but am injured. I’m exercising my upper body and abs and hoping as life returns to normal that my weight will drop. I only need to lose a stone or so but it’s so much more difficult now that I’m older.

I do use protein shakes to up my protein - Sun Warrior is quite good and used to be a more natural choice. I use My Protein Impact Whey now but it does contain some sweetener. I quite like vanilla or white chocolate and often put frozen spinach in mine with some mango and banana.

I tend otherwise to stay away from protein bars and desserts because they are very synthetic but it’s a shame because they massively up the protein intake!

Polkadotsanddiamonds · 16/06/2024 11:33

May I join you. I've been reading about this for weeks and did it for 5 days previously but was training for a half marathon and felt dreadful so stopped. Now 2 stone heavier thanks to peri and lack of giving a sh*t about my self but I don't like myself in the mirror

vincettenoir · 16/06/2024 13:05

I think protein shakes help a lot. My blood sugar is all over the place at the moment, which is why I plan to start this tomorrow (as well as the weight gain). I eat breakfast and find I’m immediately hungry afterwards. I often use them to bridge the gaps between meals and they are great for shifting distracting hunger pangs.

BeachRide · 16/06/2024 13:32

First week done and 3lbs down! 21lbs to go 😀

Picoloangel · 16/06/2024 15:07

I added cottage cheese to a protein shake today - it’s upped the protein and made it really think and creamy it was really nice.

Redpriestandmozart · 17/06/2024 18:16

Shocked that I had an 8.8lb weight loss for my first week, under no illusion that a lot would have been water loss but happy nonetheless. I have stuck to 800 cals per day, weighing every single item.

WhatsForDinner100 · 17/06/2024 18:48

Dr Mosley was an inspiration, wasn't he.

I'm fairly slim, size 8-10 (but have a little belly that I'd like to get rid of!) by keeping off pastry, biscuits and too many fried foods, especially fatty foods such as sausages or too much cheese or coconut sauces. Several friends have lost a lot of weight by only drinking alcohol at weekends.

It's important not to feel hungry, otherwise there's the temptation to nibble. I also try to avoid shopping when I'm hungry, otherwise snacks pop into the trolley, which I regret afterwards. Internet shopping is probably better to stop impulse buying.

Protein and vegetables will help keep you full. Keep portion size to a handful each of protein, carbs and veg.

I roast a chicken regularly, then carve off bits which can be added to stir fries or served with veg or salad.

Oats are good for a filling breakfast - overnight oats or porridge are easy.

Noodge · 17/06/2024 23:27

I really need to get back on the bandwaggon with this. I want to lose this 'rubber ring' I've developed before summer really kicks in!

I've made a version of the vegan Rogan Josh tonight using Quorn pieces instead of chickpeas. Does anyone know how many calories the original recipe was/is?

Howcanichange · 19/06/2024 21:02

I started properly on Monday. Going well so far.

vincettenoir · 20/06/2024 09:04

I started on Monday too and it’s going well. I think I’ll find the weekend more challenging as I’ll crave wine and treats.

GalacticalFarce · 20/06/2024 09:27

Glad this thread popped up. I've been thinking about this for ages and couldn't muster up the energy or any willpower til now.
I've got the book and I'm going to have a look at the recipes again and draw up a plan.

Breathmiller · 20/06/2024 11:54

Hi everyone and welcome to new folk.

vincettenoir

I did last week Monday to Thursday and eased off on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I didn't go crazy but did enjoy nice meals, some treats and also stopped counting calories strictly but kept an eye out of interest. Its amazing how quickly it adds up.

I did wonder how I would feel about getting back in to it on Monday but bizarrely I looked forward to it, having boundaries again. And, I have done it again mon-thurs easily.

I have a busy weekend with work so will see what happens. I will need energy. Also my household is ill with a cold/cough and I feel it coming too so that will be interesting to see how that pans out. I don't actually feel like eating but know I need to for work tonight.

I'm aware its not the proper fast 800 with only doing it 4 days but it is making a massive difference. Especially the 16/8 or more. Finishing eating earlier (even at the weekend) is quite a revelation.

All my clothes feel much looser and the biggest difference is definitely round my very apple shaped middle.

vincettenoir · 20/06/2024 13:54

Thank you, that’s really encouraging. I’m really hoping for (even modest) results because I have been struggling to shift any even though I have at least 10kg to lose.

Noodge · 20/06/2024 18:36

I've gone down from 10st 4 to 10st.

I bought some scales, but they didn't arrive until I had already been doing low carb/IF for about ten days or so so lord knows how heavy I was then.

It creeps on doesn't it?! It may not sound heavy for some but I am 5'2 and I look horrendous with bulgy bits. I am also an apple, which means that essentially I just get a big fat belly and look like an easter egg on legs. Not a good look for summer!

I want to get down to around 9st. So quite a way to go.

I CANNOT find an answer about the vegan Rogan Josh calories per portion, nor can I find calories for Quorn sweet chili fillets-on the packet it says half a packet are 85, MFP says ONE fillet is 85 (and there's 5 in a pack)!

I am going to have a day off this weekend as I am going out for dinner but I am going to TRY to only have that dinner and nothing else-so it doesn't do too much damage.

GalacticalFarce · 20/06/2024 19:22

Today has been day one and has gone well. Porridge with apple and cinnamon, tuna and bean salad, Greek yoghurt with blueberries.
I've got a holiday and a family wedding this summer. Would love, love, love to lose 2 stone by August. I'll take 1.5 stone gladly too.

GalacticalFarce · 20/06/2024 20:03

When I say August, I mean towards the end of August.

Breathmiller · 21/06/2024 08:17

Well done GalacticalFarce at doing day 1 and good luck with feeling lighter and better for August.

I've done another week. Things I've learned...to drink drink drink water. It helps so much.

And to eat real food. I am trying to empty my freezer and have odds and sods in there. I had a vegan freezer rice meal thingy in there so had it on Wenesday. Not only did it give me a stomach ache and tasted horrible but it didn't fill me up at all. Seemed such a waste of calories.
I seem to be naturally gravitating towards wholesome proper foods i.e porridge, berries, nuts, beans, veg, salad, lentils, soya yoghurt and eggs. And I really have not been feeling hungry.

Oh, and my pants keep falling down they are too big 😅 thats a win.

Noodge · 21/06/2024 17:22

I am down to 9st12. It's going in the right direction. I've not managed it today, have had about 900 cals, depending on whether I rely on MFP, the internet or what it says on packets 😂if I go by the internet I have stuck to fast 800!

TheCatterall · 21/06/2024 18:09

You are all inspirational and I’m sneaking in to join you.

I’m 50 at end of August, peri-menopause is nearly moved over to menopause and I’ve gone from a pair shaped size 14/16 to an apple shaped sized 20 and I can’t cope with it and the growing health risks and ailments.

sure I’ve got some of our beloved MM books somewhere so will dust them off and actually read and implement them.

I’m 18st 11bs (263lbs / 119kg) now - and aiming for 16st (234lbs/ 101kg) to start with.

don’t forget to take measurements! I don’t always see changes on the scales but will see changes in measurements.

good luck all.

GalacticalFarce · 21/06/2024 19:37

Well done on the weight loss and especially to pants falling down! I can't wait to have that problem.

Today was good as well. Porridge with blueberries, mushroom omelette, homemade burger (no bun) and homemade coleslaw with a few oven chips.

I agree with drinking lots of water. It's helping me.

I've just got Alan Carr's easy way to quit emotional eating. I'm trying to give this as much effort as possible.
