Day 1 of this adventure. I’ve got a headache but will soon be going to bed.
My eating window today was 8am-4pm. I’ve got so much to shift & hope I can keep this up. Anyone else want to join?

I just had a Google and apparently you shouldn't fast if your bmi is 18.5 or below. My bmi is 18.73 so I kind of feel like I can only just do it by the skin of my teeth! Does anyone think this will be ok?

I'm in the middle of my first fast now, 3pm - 7am.

Hmm....why do you want to do it? You could well lose weight if you do and it seems you can't afford to.

Hi, can I please join this thread. I know next to nothing about fasting but want to learn and give it a try! Going to finish eating tomorrow at 3pm then have nothing until 7am.

What are the benefits of doing this? Keen to learn. So far I just like the idea of it and have a vague awareness it's healthy.

Hello and welcome. There are many cited benefits ! I learnt most of what I know from podcasts. A lot of Dr Mindy thingy who wrote Fast Like a Girl. I started it at the beginning of June initially as a bit of a desperate measure to get control of my endometriosis symptoms. I’ve read it can be beneficial for that - as well as autoimmune conditions and lots of other more general health benefits. But I’m not a doctor! There’s lots out there on the web but I’m a big fan of podcasts if you did want to learn more. I find it pretty interesting

I also do have some weight to lose - and although it’s been slow it is heading in the right direction. I also like that I think about what I eat more, and I appreciate food more. I have got used to feeling hungry - which I think is no bad thing. I’m hoping keeping up with 16:8 will help me keep weight off as I head into my 40s and at some stage soon perimenopause .

Hi there, I’ve been doing for just over a week now. Got my scales sorted and weighed last Sunday. Unfortunately I haven’t lost anything so far. This is what I was concerned about as I wasn’t eating breakfast before I started and therefore not too dissimilar to my usual WOE.

i have an 8 hour eating window; sometimes less. Yesterday I ate at 1pm and finished my dinner just before 8pm. I am still having milk in the one coffee I have in my fasting time. And other than cutting out things like chocolate, biscuits and sweets I am still eating normally within my window. I am still eating crisps at lunchtime for instance.

Is not losing anything yet normal or do I need to make a change? If so what should I look to cut out? The milk in my coffee or the crisps or both?! 😱

Might just be too soon to see a difference. If you really want it to speed up then I reckon ditch the crisps! I have struggled to let go of milk in coffee but am getting more used to black coffee. I have milk in it during fasts at the weekend which feels like a treat.

ugh what do I sound like! Please note I had an enormous ice cream for lunch yesterday. And I have not given up wine!

If it’s for other health benefits you could try it and increase calories during feast window?

Rishi Sunak starts every week with a 24 hour fast doesn’t he, and he looks low BMI. I guess lot everybody does it for weight loss

Queencam · 10/08/2024 23:35

Did 18 hours today and found it fine. Have kept it up for 7 days straight so hopeful for next weigh in 🤞🏼

greengreyblue · 11/08/2024 00:24

Did about 22 hrs fast today unintentionally. Went to a friend’s birthday and food came out very late! Party food so not great for the diet but just had what I needed.Felt full very quickly. A few drinks too but 17000 steps as at a festival.

greengreyblue · 11/08/2024 08:25

@bakewellbride As others have said you’d need to be careful to ensure you eat enough to maintain your weight.

Rollergirl11 · 11/08/2024 08:57

I think I need to cut out the crisps and see what happens. I think it’s quite telling that I felt trimmer when I came back from my holiday where I wasn’t eating any.

@bakewellbride I think the thing is that IF is instructing your body to take its energy from the body rather than from food. People with a low BMI who are close to being underweight will have less body fat and so it could be detrimental for them to fast. My DD has BMI lower than 18 (and a diagnosed ED that she is in recovery from) and there’s not a chance in hell I would encourage her to do this WOE ever.

bakewellbride · 11/08/2024 13:57

Thanks to everyone who gave advice. My first ever fast was a success and I felt great at the end of it but I will be careful not to overdo it.

greengreyblue · 12/08/2024 08:38

Morning all. Really want this week to show more results. Holiday and weekend has slowed progress but at least not reversed it.

IdLikeToBeAFraser · 12/08/2024 10:14

I have been absent but still doing the fast. Tiny bit erratic over holidays but fine. I am about a month in and have lost about 2.5kg.

I have noticed that the first week or 10 days I didn't actually reduce calories that much. I was just so hungry that when I ate, I almost binged. But thatbis settling down and I am generally a lot quicker to feel full now ams craving a lot less sugar and carbs.

I also had an upset stomach for a fee day's. But I used to be on metformin and always found if i changed dose or had stopped for a while.and restarted that my stomach would be very sensitive and upset dor a few days so I took the view that this is having a similar effect. And sure enough, it settled down after a couple.of days.

I gained a bit over my period but am cautiously optimistic I will be dropping again by my next weigh in (tomorrrow). Interestingly, even though the weight loss is quite small still, I can see it on my clothes already and I have a pair of shirts and a t-shirt which are still snug but which a month ago I could not even put on. So feeling quite good.

Thanks for reminding me.of.smoked mackerel- have some in fridge that desperately needs using as well ad some slightly dodgy tomatoes that will be nice with it. Brunch today sorted!

greengreyblue · 12/08/2024 10:46

Similar loss to me @IdLikeToBeAFraser o er similar period. I started late June. Do you have much to lose?

IdLikeToBeAFraser · 12/08/2024 11:03

greengreyblue · 12/08/2024 10:46

Similar loss to me @IdLikeToBeAFraser o er similar period. I started late June. Do you have much to lose?

yes, a LOT. The day I started, I weighed almost 85kg.

If I can lose 12kg I will be thrilled but longer term, I want to lose more like 17kg but am not even thinking about that right now as it feels insurmountable at this point. Technically, I should probably aim for more like 22kg but honestly, that's just not on my radar right now - I need to have smaller manageable chunks. I know that if I lose those 12kg I will look and feel so much better and so that's what I'm focusing on for now.

In fact, as someone whose weight has tended to fluctuate around 4kg for the last few years, my first goal (which I'm hoping to meet tomorrow or by the end of this week) is to get down below what has been my absolute lowest (82kg) over the last few years because that will be my first sign that this really is definitely working. I am looking forward to saying to myself "I have definitively not weighed this "little" in at least 5 years". I got down to about 76kg about 5 or 6 years ago but piled it back on after my doctor told me I had to watch my cholestrol and stop no-carbing at night and, simultaneously, got plantar faciatis and couldn't do any meaningful walking for almost a year.

Can relate to a lot of this.

Similar weight loss. Ditto dodgy tummy and weight fluctuation around my period.

Also ditto on eating less when I do break fast. I’m much more mindful now of that first meal. Today it was an apple with peanut butter and Greek yoghurt.

You’re going in the right direction. Slow and steady is best isn’t it for longer term, meaningful weight loss

greengreyblue · 12/08/2024 21:03

18hrs today lunch: tinned mackerel in tomato sauce, salad and a few tbsp of butterbeans.
Frozen blueberries , 1 tbsp Greek yoghurt. Really cooling.
Dinner: tagliatelle with a smoky bacon, tarragon and low fat crème fraiche sauce and side salad. Not really diet food but did only have a small portion., apple.

greengreyblue · 13/08/2024 16:52

17.5 hr fast today
lunch: a classic mumsnet ‘massive salad’ with butterbeans added. Really was filling as had lots of crunch ( radish , celery, tomatoes, cucumber, carrot, onion, peppers, spinach) and then the beans. Balsamic vinegar and a bit of olive oil. Apple.
Dinner: just prepping the veg for a chicken and vegetable stirfry with rice noodles.

Queencam · 13/08/2024 20:08

16 hr fast, ten day streak - my longest.
ate half a cold burger out the fridge initially 😅 then had a protein bagel with ham avocado tomato and mayo for lunch. Dinner was a cannellini bean dish with cherry tomatoes and basil and ricotta I saw on Instagram nutritionist account. So good I could eat the whole bloody pan but have just started the next fast on Fastic so now got to make a mint tea and stop eating 🤐

greengreyblue · 13/08/2024 20:41

Hahaha @Queencam me too! My noodles were pad Thai-ish and v tasty. I realise this is where I’d go wrong. I’d cook healthy food but kept going back for more. Now I’m boxing up leftovers immediately and putting them in fridge or freezer. On mint tea too but watching Master Chef… probs not a good idea!

Yes can relate. Fasting has been a game changer for forcing myself to wrap the leftovers up and freeze / refrigerate instead of scoff. There’s something powerful about logging that next fast on Fastic I find

greengreyblue · 13/08/2024 21:03

Not heard of Fastic. Do tell.

My weight is the same today as it was 4 days ago. Feel sad. But I do feel like I look a bit different so just going to keep plugging on.
