Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Postponing fasting to tomorrow, Dont think I can make it today. Too stressful back to work day. Should do Tue + thursday this week.

OohMrDarcy · 20/05/2024 18:18

Kitchen closed on 560

ilovebagpuss · 20/05/2024 18:29

Hello back again after a rubbish few weeks. I decided to overhaul my plan as I just can't seem to eat a smaller portion when I eat the same as the family.
So I decided to just buy a ready meal for dinner (Gym Kitchen).
I have one slice of sourdough toast with egg or mushroom as a lunch.
Kitchen closed today on 550.
Mon/Thu this week.

OohMrDarcy · 20/05/2024 19:16

Well done @ilovebagpuss !

berryhand · 20/05/2024 19:33

Good work @ilovebagpuss! And @strangerInStrangeLand you are doing the right thing listening to your body.

@OohMrDarcy I reckon you due a whoosh on the scales soon!

Kitchen closing here on I reckon just under 650. Second day of b2b tomorrow.

OohMrDarcy · 21/05/2024 07:13

Morning all

Little whoosh overnight as expected and scales back where I expected them to be ... NFD for me today and a baked potato for dinner

Good luck to those fasting

harriethoyle · 21/05/2024 08:35

Kitchen closed last night on 650. Nfd today because I've got a gym class tonight and I can't do that fasted... going to IF for the next few days in lieu of FDs I think, because I've a work trip tomorrow and Thurs then off on holiday Friday night. It's damage limitation time!

Looks like everyone had good fasts yesterday! well done all!!
I m fasting today - water fast. Ready with my green teas and black coffee.

berryhand · 21/05/2024 10:16

Ooh where are you off to @harriethoyle? I go away on Sunday so also in damage limitation mode! Second day of b2b today, got a v big veggie rice bowl to have early afternoon which is 620 so that should see me through with a bit of wiggle room for teas/an emergency cup of bovril this eve.

harriethoyle · 21/05/2024 10:44

Just a staycation @berryhand but we've taken a house with friends for the bank holiday so that will be super boozy...!!

almost 7 o clock, still hanging on here. only 3 more hours to go and then bed! It is getting easier by the weeks but there is still that voice which says - eat :-)

Castlerigg · 21/05/2024 19:21

I managed a 16 hour fast, largely because I was in hospital today having a minor procedure under general anaesthetic. (All fine, I was home by 5pm.)

When I woke up they gave me tea and toast. I haven't had toast in AGES, partly because of the carbs, partly the UPF, and partly because it just doesn't really agree with me. This was basic white sliced bread, and OMG it was delicious, I could have nailed the whole loaf! It was a bit of an eye-opener actually, just in how easy it was to eat, and how moreish! It has strengthened my resolve, because sometimes bread is tempting, but I can see how easy it would be to undo all my hard work in a matter of minutes.

berryhand · 21/05/2024 22:06

Well done fellow fasters and glad you're feeling okay @Castlerigg

Kitchen closing here on 620. NFD tomorrow and Thurs then final fast day before holiday on Friday.

berryhand · 22/05/2024 10:14

Nice little whoosh on the scales this morning and now down to 160lb. One pound off initial target weight which is good, although I'm sure it's because I'm at my lightest time of the month immediately post period. Will take it though!

Hope everyone is good today, despite the crap desertion of summer.

harriethoyle · 22/05/2024 10:17

A whoosh for me too @berryhand... despite making like the Very Hungry Caterpillar yesterday and eating anything which wasn't nailed down! WHY is it that after a FD I can lose a measly 200g but after a day of robust scoffing I lose a kilo?! It genuinely irritates me 😂

Off to that there London today for a course, so supper with friends tonight which will be boozy Bearing in mind we're just stay-cationing next week I am going to try and fit in a FD or possibly two depending on activities with DSC. We'll see!!

berryhand · 22/05/2024 10:27

Excellent work @harriethoyle. There is no rhyme or reason to it sometimes! Enjoy your London trip. I am also in london today but just a boring office day for me.

harriethoyle · 22/05/2024 10:47

I start to think "oooh, it's because I've done pilates or my gym class or drank loads of water" @berryhand and try and replicate that and there is NO consistency on the scales 😂I'd like a reward for partial attempts at virtue!!

I am recuperating today, so lazing around on my partner's sofa. (We don't live together.) If I was at home I'd be tempted to do jobs because things would be bugging me. And the cats would be demanding food every twelve seconds.

It also means that I won't be tempted to graze on snacks. There is some really tasty chickpea salad in the fridge that I'll have for lunch later. I'm not fasting for the next week or so, but I'll be eating healthily.

PaperSky · 22/05/2024 20:50

Kitchen closing at 585 today.

1 week in and 3lb down.
Am buzzing 🥳

strangerInStrangeLand · 23/05/2024 11:01

Had a good fast day before and good weight loss 68.3 from 69.6. Which is back to the early days of 1 kilo loss per week before I plateaued for 3 weeks. Very happy to get this back.
Fitting in another fast day is seeming trickier with guests at home.

OohMrDarcy · 24/05/2024 09:47

Morning all

Checking in for a Friday FD today and so far feeling good.

Some good fasts and losses around so well done all!

anyone else fasting today?

OohMrDarcy · 24/05/2024 20:23

Kitchen closed on 508 here for me so I'm very happy with that.

Going to have a night time tea in a bit and head for an early night

OohMrDarcy · 27/05/2024 09:17

Morning all (quiet here for th holidays!)

Weighed in today at 104.6kg meaning a loss of 0.9kg this week
Super happy as that is next mini target smashed on to getting under 100kg next!

Having a bank holiday Monday fasting day today as travelling tomorrow for work so will be difficult and have events at the end of the week so won't be able to fast then either... Meaning today and Thursday it is!

Hope everyone is well and enjoying some family time
