Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Welcome @Happyhome05 - dive in and feel free to ask any questions. We're a friendly bunch!

Good luck @strangerInStrangeLand

I felt positively shaky with hunger on the way to work (at 9am!) and recognised there was NO CHANCE of getting to lunchtime without eating. So I picked up some breakfast and will stick to planned fast day lunch and tea, coming in at c. 900 calories. A bit frustrating but sometimes your body just tells you what it needs. I had quite a low NFD on Tuesday, inadvertently (sub 900 cals), and I wonder if that scuppered today as just being a fast too far.

Bank holiday on Monday so back on it on Tuesday!

Hi all, 3rd fast day for me today. I also didn’t get much sleep due to the intense storms, particularly the lighting! Had a coffee so far. Good luck all.

strangerInStrangeLand · 02/05/2024 16:59

Good luck everyone, I have exhausted 521 so far and hope to close kitchen with this. 4 more hours to go then I will just sleep

Tinydancer123 · 02/05/2024 21:06

Hi all , I took the advice did 2 days at 738 , day off @1000 and today @ 552. Still stuck but maybe it will shift next week ( as time of month ) x

strangerInStrangeLand · 02/05/2024 22:06

Well done @Tinydancer123 @harriethoyle good work listening to the body! Looks like you have a fast sub 800 type week this time

I stayed at 521, Just water since then, also managed to go for a walk and do some zumba just 15/20 mins .
Week 4 complete! Really admire anyone who has been doing this for a long time, even tho doing it each week is manageable, doing this week after week consistently is something!

sweetgingercat · 03/05/2024 01:21

Kitchen closed on 578 today. We’ll done everyone. @strangerInStrangeLand ylu are correct, it’s difficult to maintain week after week especially if you go on holiday. I find that really hard…

Happyhome05 · 03/05/2024 06:33

Hi 👋@harriethoyle thanks for the welcome 🙏 I managed a full fast Monday, I had planned one full one yesterday but my hunger got the better of me, so ended up eating more than 500 cals, stilll had done a 19hour fast. I weighed and I have lost a 1lbs. I’m happy enough with that. Slow n steady. Going to do a few mini fasts over the weekend, then see u back here Tuesday for a full one. Enjoy the bank holiday weekend x

harriethoyle · 03/05/2024 07:23

Morning all - the irony, after muffing up yesterday's FD half a kilo off overnight. Last week, a perfect b2b and nothing lost after FD2 🤣🙈

Keep tracking @Tinydancer123 and definitely give it a week. I'm always heavier at TOTM.

Welcome @Happyhome05

Well done to yesterday's fasters

Checking in for a Friday FD here, got some chicken and veggies for my dinner tonight

Happyhome05 · 03/05/2024 08:46

Thanks @OohMrDarcy

Good luck with your fast today 💪

strangerInStrangeLand · 03/05/2024 12:19

welcome @Happyhome05 Good luck all fasters.
I lost half a kilo from 70.7 to 70.2 after yesterdays fast still half a kilo over last weeks lowest at 69.6! I m still attributing that to water ;-) The joy of going below 70 snatched from me too soon! booo ! ha ha!
Tracking my NFDs this week and will keep them to 1600 my TDEE, Its easy to get complacent. I just ate a brioche slice - 170 calories! similar size rye bread is 60 calories!??!!!!! my breakfast + lunch already 1000(mostly good things except for piece of chocolate + brioche = 250)

Going on holiday week after to Italy. may be couple of days skip breakfast and make average of 1600 for 10 days should keep my weight same as there will be lot of walking ? I hope so.

OohMrDarcy · 03/05/2024 19:17

Kitchen closed on 535 today so happy with that. Have a lovely weekend all

berryhand · 03/05/2024 20:45

Well done to all fasters this week! Kitchen closing here on about 520 so that'll do.

Going to try as ever to be restrained over the bank hol. Back for a Tuesday FD I think. Have a great weekend everyone!

strangerInStrangeLand · 04/05/2024 23:32

Two good NFDs with 1550 per day, my TDEE is between 1500-1650 based on how much I say my fat % is. my scale says I m 40% fat but I think I m about 35%..

OohMrDarcy · 06/05/2024 07:31

Morning all

Weigh day today at 106.6kg meaning a loss this week of 0.8kg

I must be mental as I'm going in for a bank holiday Monday FD today, should be an easy one as I have my left over mini roast for dinner all ready so get to enjoy that later on! Just me and the dog today and it's miserable here so shouldn't feel the urge to be in a beer garden or anything!

strangerInStrangeLand · 06/05/2024 10:33

@OohMrDarcy I m with you today. fasting - 500 calories or 650 back to back, not decided yet.
my NFD yesterday was not good 1800 cal but I walked 10km so calorie wise it was ok,
I ate lot of sugar and wheat. I know it is not good for me but i end up eating when everyone around me is eating and its slippery slope, I ate so much chocolate. That is why sugar is so evil, it just draws me in and next thing I know I m eating a pack full of custard biscuits.

Counting calories is very good, I m going on holiday next week will continue to count even tho I may not restrict myself.

OohMrDarcy · 06/05/2024 18:53

Kitchen closed on 598 which I'm taking as a massive win considering I definitely thought about ordering myself a Chinese 🤣

Hope your day is going well @strangerInStrangeLand

NFD tomorrow, and in the office so have my food roughly planned for the day already

harriethoyle · 07/05/2024 08:30

Morning all, signing in for day 1 of a b2b. Who else is with me?

I'm with you today @harriethoyle! Also need to get out for a run at some point too

strangerInStrangeLand · 07/05/2024 10:37

good day yesterday 516. Back to the same weight as 2 weeks ago 69.5. After hovering above 70 last 2 weeks. Next fast day tomorrow or day after. Need to sneak it in as I have family staying over.

@OohMrDarcy good work . It is definitely a win 💪

Good luck todays fasters.

berryhand · 07/05/2024 20:58

Good work @strangerInStrangeLand! I think kitchen has probably closed here on around 550 which I'll take.

Was starving earlier and very tempted to order myself a pizza but held firm. Next FD Friday I think.

harriethoyle · 07/05/2024 21:23

Kitchen closing here on 621. Back tomorrow for day 2 of b2b. Well done @berryhand and @strangerInStrangeLand

Castlerigg · 07/05/2024 22:59

I haven't posted the last couple of weeks because I wasn't sure if fasting is going to work for me, but I'm back for another try. I'm combining it with reducing my alcohol consumption, because the 9pm wine both delays the start of my fast and ups my calories.

I've been doing pretty well staying under TDEE (1200) and have been losing weight very gradually, but I want to step it up a gear now.

I've started drinking Rooibos tea most of the time, but definitely for the first brew of the day, to delay breaking the fast. That was the first habit to break. 9pm wine is the next one.

harriethoyle · 08/05/2024 11:16

I'm coming down with something horrible - tossed and turned all night and have a throat like razor blades 😔Taking it easy today and will see if a FD in lieu is possible tomorrow.
