Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

@Tinydancer123 I wonder if you need to up your exercise but also go back to basics - track absolutely everything that you put in your mouth and if you're only 6b from target, try tracking NFDs. It may be you are overeating on both having got a bit complacent... I find it very easy to do!

Hi all, back with you this morning for the first day of a B2B. Good luck everyone...

strangerInStrangeLand · 29/04/2024 15:03

Definitely easier after 4 weeks, constant sipping of hot water is helping a lot. It being sunny also helping a lot! I went for half hour walk as well.

@berryhand I especially love hot yoga in winter, I just started this Jan tho, I thought it was good alternative to finding a good sauna ;-)

Hand in there fellow fasters!!

Tinydancer123 · 29/04/2024 18:10

Good idea @berryhand . I am doing a b2b but struggled at 730 ekkkk and still hungry xxx

strangerInStrangeLand · 29/04/2024 19:53

Hows everyone doing? Just couple of more hours to go!!! so far so good. Already planning tomorrows breakfast ! Smells of food at home arent helping. It is easier than before but definitely not easy !

OohMrDarcy · 29/04/2024 20:53

Kitchen closed on 577 here

How has everyone done?

strangerInStrangeLand · 29/04/2024 22:21

Well done @OohMrDarcy my water fast done too!

sweetgingercat · 30/04/2024 00:26

Kitchen closed on 561 here. We’ll done everyone. Back here tomorrow…

berryhand · 30/04/2024 07:19

Well done yesterday's fasters! Signing in for my FD today. Got a busy day of calls for work so hopefully will be easy to stay distracted!

harriethoyle · 30/04/2024 08:43

Morning all, 1/2 kg of weekend water weight off and a sensible NFD with an exercise class after work today before b2b tomorrow and Thursday. Am hoping swapping my b2b to Weds-Thurs will lead to a more virtuous week overall...

Good luck to all fasters today!

gain! 0.4 from last time, 70kg, last week was 69.6. I m sure it is water weight , I can see it on my face, my nose is twice as big and I have bags under and even above my eye. I m prone to bloating, it takes weeks for it to go as well. That is why keeping morale up during weightloss was difficult, but the last 3 weeks have really helped me believe that even tho it is not showing, I m doing well underneath the bloat!

I was doing water fasts to get rid of inflamation, improve immunity, May be the bad NFDs - especially sunday lead to this. I was told to stop milk, sugar and wheat to reduce inflamation. was working well. I restarted chocolates last week and ate a lot of dorritos. Oh Well! Tomorrow 500 cal fast. With lot of good food, tofu soup and tons of veggies . And clean eating from now on.

berryhand · 30/04/2024 14:32

My weight fluctuates so much during the month @strangerInStrangeLand, can be as much as 4-5lb either way. V frustrating!

Currently sipping a lemon and ginger tea, I always feel the worst hunger pangs around this time.

Tinydancer123 · 30/04/2024 18:42

Good evening ,

How are you ?

I am doing 3 days b2b on my second but made a mistake the two days so far come in at 738 each day. Will I still lose or should I adjust my meal this evening to lower cals ?

berryhand · 30/04/2024 20:39

Kitchen closing on about 510 here so not too bad.

@Tinydancer123 three days b2b is a tough one! Maybe just try the two next time? How did you get on?

sweetgingercat · 01/05/2024 00:11

Not sure exactly what my kitchen closed on (as I joined my family again for a small portion of spaghetti carbonara) but prior to that I was on 244 cals. So I'm thinking that I will have come in around 650 today which is fine. It feels a bit uncomfortable not to know, but I guess that's my fault!

OohMrDarcy · 01/05/2024 08:16

Morning all

Checking in for a Weds FD today (aiming for 3 this week!) have some chicken kebabs prepped in the fridge so will have two of those with veggies for dinner I think

harriethoyle · 01/05/2024 08:41

Morning @OohMrDarcy I'm with you. Tuna thin for lunch, prawn fishcake for dinner.

@Tinydancer123 3 b2b sounds brutal and, tbh, almost guaranteed binge on day 4 because you're so relieved to be done! I'd try 2 and a third single later in the week if you want to do three. Alternatively track your nfd for a week and see if you're undoing your hard work on fd.

Another win

harriethoyle · 01/05/2024 21:11

OohMrDarcy · 01/05/2024 21:16

You too @harriethoyle

No b2b for me tomorrow will go Friday or Saturday for my third

harriethoyle · 02/05/2024 08:22

Signing in for FD3 - terrible night's sleep last night so today will be a struggle...

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 02/05/2024 08:43

did you have the storms @harriethoyle - I kept being woken up by heavy rain / thunder / lightning half the night! Good luck, I find fasting when knackered really hard work!

NFD here

harriethoyle · 02/05/2024 08:47

No, I just couldn't settle @OohMrDarcy - no idea why. Ended up in the spare room so I didn't wake DH. Frustrating!

I m joining in for fasting today with 500 calories.

Happyhome05 · 02/05/2024 11:09

Hi guys. I would love to join. I’ve been fasting on & off for a while now, mainly with an eating window. I had some success but my love of wine & crisps are getting in the way & wrecking any chance of success. I’m now trying 5 2 (might make me put down the wine a couple of nights a week). I’m 46 I do love my life but my extra wobbly thigh’s need to go. Turn 47 in august and want to feel good. Fasted Monday & on it today, managing fine so far, lots of fizzy water, black coffee. Then my 500ish meal @ 7ish. G’luck to all on the wagon today. 👊😘X
