Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Checking in for b2b day one.

@JemimaFuddle I've been similar to you and not really counted as such but have tried to log everything in mfp @Borris

The first stone or thereabouts came off easy but now I'm going to have to be a bit stricter on non FDs I think and not eat a whole bag of dark chocolate covered pretzels after lunch

Planning noodles for lunch and a chicken casserole ready meal thing from Aldi for dinner and MORE WATER which I really need to get better at.

OohMrDarcy · 22/02/2024 07:18

Morning all

Apologies for being AWOL. Had a few days of travelling for work / lots of meetings etc so FD would have been really tricky
Have kept to TDEE though which I'm proud of!

Checking in for a Thursday FD today

OohMrDarcy · 22/02/2024 08:57

For those struggling with hunger on FD, I find the key is a combination of :

  • consciously thinking about what you're having the night before - no massive meal, no alcohol etc
  • drink LOADS - more than you think you need... I switch it up so I don't get bored, occasional cup of tea, occasional no added sugar weak squash
  • and meals low / no carb and protein based - I tend to have my main meal at lunchtime but sometimes split it 50/50 (I don't eat breakfast)

hope that helps someone!

re TDEE @Borris - the official guidance is you should aim to maintain on non fast days, so TDEE at your current weight - but I personally want to get used to the eating levels of where I would prefer to be, so I worked out TDEE at about 4st less (so much closer to a healthy weight - a lot to lose!) and aim for that. This is the calculator I use
https://thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-calories-on-a-non-fast-day/

How does the Fast Diet work? How many calories per day?

How the diet works and how much you should eat. Calculate your BMI, BMR and TDEE (the amount of calories you burn per day) on The Fast Diet official site.

Kitchen closing on 633 which I'm pretty happy with. Not found it too bad today and I've been good with drinking enough so think that's definitely made a difference.

How's everyone else got on?

OohMrDarcy · 22/02/2024 20:42

Kitchen closed on 750. Not ideal but not the end of the world. Really struggled with feeling cold today (5 degrees and torrential rain) Raj out of teabags so have replaced them already!

Might go b2b tomorrow to get the benefit of the higher cals

harriethoyle · 22/02/2024 20:46

Kitchen closing on 737, which is a bit higher than I'd planned but I ditched proposed second half of last nights curry in favour of chicken soup and toast for 400 cals. Much more satisfying!

1341 for the b2b.

OP posts:
berryhand · 22/02/2024 20:54

God I'd bloody love some toast. Sadly second b2b day for me tomorrow but need to set myself in good stead for massive takeaway pizza on Sat.

Weather has been sooo awful @OohMrDarcy. Definitely makes it harder to stick to fasting

harriethoyle · 23/02/2024 07:53

You got this @berryhand !

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 23/02/2024 08:45

Good luck today Berry

Checking in for day 2 also - yesterdays struggle was triggered by the running out of teabags I think - needing the hot drink.

Am planned out for today (and have a new stash of tea to help get me through!) so fingers crossed!!

berryhand · 23/02/2024 11:49

Solidarity @OohMrDarcy! We can do it.

I've had a scotch pancake and veg noodles so far. My trusty M&S count on us risotto planned for tea which I'll have early on before I do bath and bed chaos with DC. Keeps me well distracted at least!

A pound loss this morning from start of the week so happy with that. Really want to get under 12st. Two more lbs to go but they are proving v stubborn.

Tinydancer123 · 23/02/2024 12:05

Hi all, I had a woosh I think this is what you call it ? Now 5 pounds away from goal. It is a TDDE day I am going to look at this calendar thank you looks great.
The curry sounds lovely :) The rissoto also sounds lovely. Pizza on sat also sounds great )

OohMrDarcy · 23/02/2024 12:06

you're doing fab Berry

My day is going better than yesterday now I have tea supplies 😂

Having soup for dinner tonight as I find having main FD meal at lunchtime works better with digestion for me, so aim for that when possible.

Getting close to where you want to be means it will take longer to come off as you're TDEE will be lower, just keep pushing on an be patient, you'll get there I'm sure!

Luckily (?!) for me I have lots to lose at the moment haha

OohMrDarcy · 23/02/2024 12:07

oooh congrats @Tinydancer123 - a whoosh is always fab!

berryhand · 23/02/2024 12:10

Amazing @Tinydancer123! When you reach your goal will you keep fasting to maintain?

@OohMrDarcy I'm with you on the bigger meal earlier actually, might give it a go. I tend to eat in a 4-5 hour window in the afternoon on FDs and then just down peppermint tea in the evening or go to bed just after the kids

OohMrDarcy · 23/02/2024 12:14

same @berryhand - I have lunch / dinner and that is it - tea / water / squash in the morning and a night time tea about an hour or two after dinner and before bed.

harriethoyle · 23/02/2024 14:00

Fabulous @Tinydancer123 !!

Slightly depressingly I am still 1ish kg away from my pre Christmas weight. Christmas then a fortnight on the slopes did a LOT of damage! 😂But the trend is gradually downwards so I'll keep trucking away.

2 FD next week, b2b M/T and a mini Weds. Then off to sunny Spain for a long weekend! That'll help the scales... not!!

Well done @Tinydancer123 :-)

Tinydancer123 · 23/02/2024 17:41

How lovely Spain. Thanks all.

Why is it I gooble so much on a TDDE day.... I am over cals and not had tea ! Yet I had the woosh !!! Why do I do this ?

Am I alone or does anyone else ruin it on TDDE?

I will stay and fast with you all but I doubt goal will come anytime soon with the mess I have made eating today 😬

OohMrDarcy · 23/02/2024 18:58

Keep plugging away @Tinydancer123 it will come when it's ready

@harriethoyle how exciting, I'm off to Spain too but not until the start of April so plenty of time to get some kgs gone in the meantime!

Kitchen closed on 492 and 😇 managed well today (multiple cups of tea!) Just the weekend to maintain now before I weigh in on Monday! Fingers crossed

berryhand · 23/02/2024 21:14

Another 650 on the nose today apart from the one pick n mix sweet DD forced into my gob earlier. Getting an early night cos feeling pretty starving.

@harriethoyle v jealous of your Spain trip. With you for Monday Tuesday b2b.

@Tinydancer123 I am 100% guilty of this also but trying to be better!

Excellent total @OohMrDarcy. Hope everyone has a lovely weekend.

harriethoyle · 26/02/2024 07:56

Morning all, signing in for a b2b - a really virtuous weekend but not at all reflected on this morning's scales! Bah...

OP posts:
berryhand · 26/02/2024 08:17

Morning! Also checking in for b2b. Not especially virtuous but not terrible. I'm trying to limit weigh ins to once a week now. Also due on period so feel ragey. I don't think it's going to be an easy one today...

OohMrDarcy · 26/02/2024 08:39

week 3 weigh in :

111.4kg meaning a loss of 1.2 kg
and a total loss over 3 weeks of 3.4kg or 7.5lb
happy with that progress 😀

Currently planning 3 FD this week

Tues / Weds b2b and possibly Friday also

Good luck to todays fasters @berryhand and @harriethoyle - almost wish I was joining you, but I have left over roast for dinner and too many potatoes on my plate!

harriethoyle · 26/02/2024 09:10

That's great progress @OohMrDarcy well done. I am going to eat all the patatas bravas this weekend so I don't begrudge you your Monday roast 😂

OP posts:
berryhand · 26/02/2024 09:22

Amazing @OohMrDarcy! Keep at it. Very jealous of your roast potatoes...
