Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Finishing today on 700. It's been harder than I thought...I'm so hungry 😕 I think I need to have protein at lunchtime. A cuppa soup and a banana didn't cut it!

I was going to do B2B but I'm not now I will probably do Thursday instead.

harriethoyle · 20/02/2024 08:27

I always have protein @Esmereldapawpatrol tuna or chicken are low calorie - definitely helps with the afternoon hunger pangs!

A downward whoosh on the scales this morning to take me back to my lowest weight in the last two months. b2b tomorrow and Thursday should shave a bit more off.

I agree with @harriethoyle on protein, I would also add prawns, cottage cheese and lentils to filling, low cal protein sources.

berryhand · 20/02/2024 10:48

Amazing work @harriethoyle. Considering a b2b Thurs and Friday now. Trying to have a sensible TDEE day today and tomorrow as going to a friend's for a takeaway on Sat.

@Esmereldapawpatrol I had cup-a-soups on FDs a couple of weeks ago and it definitely doesn't do much to fill you up.

Esmereldapawpatrol · 20/02/2024 11:18

I actually had my best night's sleep for ages last night so that's a positive!
I was so grumpy last night! I felt good this morning though and did consider another FD but I am going to do Saturday instead now as it's busy day with the kids clubs and I always seem to eat less anyway.

Thank you for the protein advice, I will be more organised for the next one!

sweetgingercat · 20/02/2024 15:16

Dear all, back with a fast day today after a week off with a cold and a big birthday to celebrate (not mine) so ate more than I should have and I’m really glad to be back… good luck fasters today…

Borris · 20/02/2024 18:49

Another one wondering if it's possible to not feel hungry on a FD. I'm going to try some tuna next time

harriethoyle · 20/02/2024 18:58

Don't get me wrong @Borris I always feel hungry on a fast day - usually from 12 noon til I eat then from 5pm till I eat. But it's not a big deal and there are ways to minimise it, lots of water, coffee, herbal tea, diet coke etc. And making sure you get enough protein is key. If I have a carby dinner a) its tiny because its high in cals for not much b) I'll be hungry within a couple of hours before bed.

Hi all I hope you had a great day.
I had a jambalaya 454 and a crumpt 98.
I am now closed for the b2b . How are you all doing ?

sweetgingercat · 20/02/2024 21:56

Kitchen closed on 586 for me which is fine after a week of drinking (oops) and eating and celebrating…

re hunger, like @harriethoyle Im another one here who finds carb free fasting is definitely the way to go if I want to avoid being hungry on a fast day. Salad fish and cheese are my go to meals on fast days. I also find if I go low carb the night before, such as Sunday night before a b2b, it’s easier the following day. I also think once you get into the swing of things the more fast days you do, the less hungry you feel all round.

a
Anyone fasting tomorrow? I’m planning the second half of a B2B tomorrow and will prob have to fast on Friday to catch up!

berryhand · 20/02/2024 22:10

Well done fasters! I think I might do a b2b Thursday and Fri then another Monday and Tues next week. Really want to get below 12st and have about 3lb to go.

harriethoyle · 20/02/2024 22:21

I'll see you here tomorrow @sweetgingercat - really interesting point about low carb the night before... I've never thought about that!

Can someone explain TDEE to me please? And recommend a calculator. Do I put in the weight I want to be or that I am. Because for my height (170cm) and weight (70kg) and light exercise (daily dog walk) it gave me 1900 calories which seems a lot!

harriethoyle · 21/02/2024 09:40

Morning all - here for day one of a b2b. Coronation chicken thin for lunch and chicken and chickpea curry with broccoli for dinner.

I've no idea about TDEE, sorry @Borris

JemimaFuddle · 21/02/2024 10:40

I am fasting today too

@Borris I don't know much about TDEE but I am only 5 foot 3 and half and many years ago when I did every day dieting I lost weight eating 1600 - 1700 a day so 1900 doesn't seem that high to me!

JemimaFuddle · 21/02/2024 10:56

I am subsisting on miso, slices of ham til lunch time and then making low calorie dahl for dinner.

harriethoyle · 21/02/2024 11:06

Miso is a good call @JemimaFuddle how do you make it? with a paste? I wouldn't know where to start with a good one...

OP posts:
JemimaFuddle · 21/02/2024 11:21

I use the Yutaka miso soup sachets as they have bits of seaweed in which I think makes them more satisfying and they have only 18 calories.

I either just have it as warm drink or add spices, chicken stock prawns, soy and veg for a low calorie soup for an evening meal.

harriethoyle · 21/02/2024 19:31

Thanks @JemimaFuddle I'll look out for them.

Kitchen closing on 609. Happy with that! Back tomorrow for day 2.

How did you all do ?

berryhand · 21/02/2024 20:26

Good work @harriethoyle, joining you tomorrow for b2b day 1

sweetgingercat · 21/02/2024 21:24

749 here, it’s the second day of B2B and I think my first was under so I’m mildly annoyed with myself, but it will do! We’ll done every one else…

JemimaFuddle · 21/02/2024 21:39

I finished up on 530. I very nearly caved at the smell of chicken shops on my walk back from pilates though 😂

Weigh in tomorrow. I'm that my week off last week didn't do too much damage.

Borris · 21/02/2024 22:06

Well done all the fasters. How do you decide how much to eat on your "normal" days?

JemimaFuddle · 21/02/2024 23:17

I don't count on non fast days. I try to be sensible and have cut right back on wine, takeaways and junk food. This is enough for me to lose weight at the moment,my bmi has gone from 31 to 29. I think would need to be stricter if I was slimmer though.
