Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

That's an excellent result for three weeks off @SydneyCarton! Well done!

I am seeing old friends tonight so have opted for turkish and will go for kebabs and salad to limit the mid week damage done. Usually I'm quite restrained on a week day! Then B2B tomorrow and Thurs...

SydneyCarton · 22/08/2023 11:55

@harriethoyle Turkish sounds delicious. I hope I've read the scales properly - I was peering at them without my glasses at 9.30pm with a 5 year old pushing and pulling at me Hmm

harriethoyle · 22/08/2023 12:20

@SydneyCarton I think that sounds an excellent way to read the scales and will adopt it forthwith!!

Afternoon all.
How's everyone's week going so far?

I overate massively on Sunday (and of course Friday) but did stick to a 8 hr window and managed a FD on Sat and Mon so hoping that has managed to limit the damage a little.
Will have another FD tomorrow or Thurs and try to be good for the weekend (although have a meal out planned for Sat).
Hol is next week so trying not to undo the progress of the last two months before even on the plane!

TeaRose29 · 22/08/2023 15:08

Well done @SydneyCarton . We are in the same boat - I want to lose 5 pounds before my holiday in October. So basically 5 pounds in 5 weeks. Sounds easy but won’t be!

@harriethoyle , Turkish is my absolute go-to for staying on track. We have a lovely one just a few minutes walk away. Unfortunately there is also a pizza place that DH is always angling to go to….🤣

DoodleMum12 · 22/08/2023 22:29

@SydneyCarton that’s a fantastic result!

I ended up doing a FD with a mini meal which I definitely needed today. Kept it to around 500/600 calories and drank loads of water today. Need to flush out the bloat 😂

mumlikeaboss · 22/08/2023 23:56

Well done everyone, lots of good results and excellent restraint being shown 🤣

Yesterday was a bit sketchy over here 🤐 I meant to do an evening OMAD but stupid DD refused to eat the cheese & ham toastie I bought her when out for lunch... So what could I do?! 🤭

Had that and dinner but pretty sure would have constituted a mini anyway.

Stuck to it much better today, 30-minute window at lunchtime and will now get a good 22 hours before eating tomorrow.

harriethoyle · 23/08/2023 08:14

Morning all, some excellent willpower being recorded on the thread!

Anyone with me today? I'm on a b2b...

OP posts:
TeaRose29 · 23/08/2023 11:29

I’m with you today, @harriethoyle . Yesterday was a mini, not really intentional but I did IF in the morning as usual, played tennis, then a minor domestic drama (now resolved) distracted me and I didn’t really get to eat, as DH wanted to go to the pub to unwind 😬.

Upshot is that I am now half a pound below my recent plateau, which is good news, but can I stay there or get a bit lower?

Good luck to today’s fasters! 💪💪

harriethoyle · 23/08/2023 19:16

How did you get on @TeaRose29 ? Kitchen closing here on 553 but I'm still starving 🤣

Morning all! Signing in for day 2 of a b2b...

OP posts:
TeaRose29 · 24/08/2023 08:54

Kitchen closed at around 800 yesterday, but weight annoyingly UP a pound this morning. I’ve got a lot of work to do today, so I’m just planning to eat sensibly - don’t have any non-sensible food in the house anyway!

Well done @harriethoyle , sounds like you toughed it out yesterday! Good luck for today 💪💪.

harriethoyle · 24/08/2023 08:56

Lots of water @TeaRose29 to flush everything through!

OP posts:
TeaRose29 · 24/08/2023 08:59

Yes, I’m sure you’re right, @harriethoyle – I’m feeling a bit bloated.

Alargeoneplease · 24/08/2023 09:22

I know I’m a bit late to the party but can I join please?

Been vaguely calorie counting for a couple of months but scales not shifting. Nothing to do with my love of food and Prosecco 😜
so started 5:2 tied in with IF 2 weeks ago. Have lost 5lbs to date.
I am on my second FD this week ahead of going away for the weekend. I know I’ll put on a bit while I’m away but happy with that and committed to coming back and getting straight on it!

harriethoyle · 24/08/2023 11:21

Welcome @Alargeoneplease - come and join us! Sounds like you've made a great start and as someone who firmly believes Friday is Wineday, you'll fit right in here!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 24/08/2023 20:58

Kitchen closing on 745 making almost exactly 1300 for the b2b 😊 dreaming about breakfast tomorrow 🤣

OP posts:
TeaRose29 · 25/08/2023 10:12

Well done @harriethoyle , I’m sure you are enjoying hot buttered toast as we speak! Welcome@Alargeoneplease , this WOE certainly works, and 5 off in 2 weeks is amazing.

I’m just going to IF for the next few days. Bit fed up and preoccupied at the moment as I have a full-on piece of consultancy work that will take all weekend to finish (especially as client will not reply to questions 🤨). At least we’re going out for dinner (lovely tapas restaurant) on Saturday.

I’m seriously thinking about starting a sort of pre-tox on 1st September and going hardcore for 4 weeks, before my holiday in October, just to get me off my plateau. There’s something about a new month, isn’t there!

Enjoy Friday everyone!

harriethoyle · 25/08/2023 10:18

@TeaRose29 I went down and dirty and had a cheese and onion pastry slice from the local bakery on the way to work. BLISS 😂

I am on AL til next Thursday and anniversary of my DM's death this weekend so I am not going to be back until Thursday I suspect, but I agree with you that a new month is a good reset. I'm happy to join you in a super disciplined Sept! (apart from a long weekend away in Spain where I will eat ALL the tapas!)

OP posts:
TeaRose29 · 25/08/2023 12:13

Sorry to hear about your sad anniversary, @harriethoyle . Thinking of you.

It would be great to have a buddy for Super September! Anyone else joining?

DH has just gone shopping and I’ve asked him to get me some hot cross buns/teacakes Blush.

Alargeoneplease · 25/08/2023 13:52

Thanks for the welcome!
My FD yesterday finished on 799 with a 5.75 mile run thrown in.
Hopped on the scales this morning and have lost 1lbs. After a heavy weekend, I’ll take that.

Know exactly how you’re feeling @harriethoyle… it’s the first birthday of my Dads that we are celebrating with him no longer here. But I went for a nice walk to a place that was special to us this morning and had a chat with him ❤️

Actually heading to the airport in a while for a cheeky long weekend away - no kids - so doubt I’ll be fasting while I’m away 🤣
But I am going to try 16:8, which I find quite easy anyway, plus be more mindful of my food choices. But there will be alcohol 😜
So, I’m definitely up for a regimented and strict September with you both.

Have a lovely bank holiday weekend and enjoy your tapas and hot cross buns x

DoodleMum12 · 25/08/2023 22:59

I’m 100% in for super disciplined September!! I also need to get out of my slump

@Alargeoneplease have a fab kid free holiday bliss

@harriethoyle those anniversaries are always hard. It was the 9th one for my mum a few days ago 😞 sending hugs

@TeaRose29 a toasted tea cake is now on my mind 😂 hope you enjoyed it

I’ve had a mixed week of one FD and the rest a mix of omad and 19/5ish - still not making the best choices but also my period came 2 days early so maybe that’s something to do with it. September will have to be a better month

DoodleMum12 · 25/08/2023 23:08

Forgot to mention we had a few celebratory drinks as DD did amazing in her GCSE’s - my alcohol free week went out the window. Maybe alcohol free September (apart from one day as DH and I having a night away on our own)

SydneyCarton · 29/08/2023 11:05

Had planned a FD for today to fit in with working in the office, but plans have changed to home working today, so I will do 16:8 today (hanging in there until 1pm) and then a FD tomorrow.

I also like the sound of Super September as my first overseas holiday in six years is coming up in October (I am ridiculously excited) so could do with some discipline beforehand. Not sure I'll be totally alcohol free, but will definitely cut down Grin I've really slacked off the running as well which happens every August so September will be a good reset.
