Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Five Guys was my downfall, so I finished the day on 1008, 200 cals over the 800 I had left for today. Hey ho, it was delicious and I didn’t have to cook it so no regrets 🤣. Planning a run tomorrow and maybe a mini on Friday.

Hope your tea was good when you finally got it harriet!

harriethoyle · 03/11/2022 08:45

@SydneyCarton in my book that counts as a mini 😉

Anyone joining me today? Day 3 of the week. Very early start this morning means that today will be powered by caffeine and bad temper!!

@harriethoyle I did a FD today. Not sure I've lost any this week or just maintaining coz had a couple of takeouts.. may have gone over calories and also todays fast was almost 800.

But I had steroid injections in a scar yesterday and had a case of food poisoning on Sunday night too.

Just got to roll with the dices!

harriethoyle · 03/11/2022 19:30

Sounds like a tough week @beststepforward - you're a hero for fasting at all!

Kitchen closing here on 545. Really delicious soup for tea which is exactly what this weather needs.

Good morning everyone, back to fasting after a three week break today! I'm pleased to report that I have managed to maintain my weight without calorie counting or restricting my food intake. Mind you I did have covid which suppressed my appetite for a couple of days, and I also did a medical fast, but otherwise the only restriction was not having a proper lunch when working from home.

Anyone joining me today?

harriethoyle · 07/11/2022 15:09

I'm with you @EatYourFive - day 1 of a b2b. Well done on maintenance! I had a quiet weekend and it's paid off on the scales with only a small fluctuation so should get more holiday weight off this week 🤞

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 07/11/2022 15:52

Yay @harriethoyle! Have you managed to shift all your half-term holiday weight? I am still undecided whether to do a B2B or just a separate day later this week, will see how I feel tomorrow morning. Feeling OK so far but might get ravenous later.

harriethoyle · 07/11/2022 16:14

@EatYourFive not quite but not far off... should get the last of it off thus week if I manage 3 fds. DH is then away with work for a couple of weeks and I always eat more lightly when I'm on my own because I can't be bothered to cook for just me so I'm hopeful I should have a relatively restrained month save for a couple of boozy dinners...

(Famous last words!)

EatYourFive · 07/11/2022 17:27

Good luck this week, hopefully you'll be back on track in no time!

harriethoyle · 07/11/2022 20:17

Thanks @EatYourFive 😊 how did you get on?

Kitchen closing here on 739 which is a bit higher than anticipated... I cooked the wrong fishcake 🙄 so I'll cut back somewhere tomorrow to try and stay as close to 600 as possible 🤞

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 07/11/2022 20:24

Ah well as you're planning 3 FDs this week anyway don't think that makes a huge difference. Kitchen closed at around 500 here, didn't do a proper count but also didn't really eat properly today so definitely within limits. I will skip tomorrow and fast again Wednesday or Thursday (or both? Unlikely!).
Well done and good luck tomorrow!

According to the scales this morning, that's the holiday weight gone. Hurrah! Next target is back to target... 1.3kg til I get there. Roll on FD3 tomorrow!

EatYourFive · 09/11/2022 09:15

Well done @harriethoyle, excellent work!

I'm fasting today if anyone wants to join me. Probably just a single fast so asking for <500. May do a mini tomorrow though.

harriethoyle · 09/11/2022 09:47

Good luck @EatYourFive I'll see you here tomorrow for your mini 👍 already excited about tonight's slow cooker chilli 😆

Just a quick hello to help me stay accountable today!

I’m an old timer (have name changed since I was on here last). Started fasting 7 years ago. It really worked for me, then I hit 40 and it was a struggle. Suddenly throwing in the odd FD didn’t have the same effect that it used to. The weight piled on.

Anyway, I’ve lost two and a half stone this year - without a FD insight! I’ve been counting calories and macros and I’ve upped my exercise too.

So why am I here? Well, I think fasting could be a really useful tool alongside what I’m currently doing, especially in the run up to Christmas.

Attempting a FD today. I know if I don’t post here, I’ll cave by lunchtime! So, here I am.

Good luck to any other Wednesday fasters!

EatYourFive · 09/11/2022 14:43

Nice to have you here @Onehappymam! Well done for losing all that weight this year, that's amazing!
How is your fast day going? I tend to save most of my calories for dinner time so feeling pretty hungry at the moment, just a few more hours to go!

Onehappymam · 09/11/2022 22:58

Thank you! You’d think having lost that much weight I’d have it sussed, but it still feels like a struggle. I’m hoping fasting will cancel out the days where I go over.

I save all my calories for dinner too. Once you get past the mid afternoon slump, you’re sorted!

Badlifeday · 10/11/2022 06:47

Always interesting to hear about fasting as a long term solution! I am at almost 6 months now. I don't generally last that long on a diet.
Not fasting today (though I was due to) as have a cracker of a cold and think I'd end up breaking it anyway.

harriethoyle · 10/11/2022 08:03

Welcome @Onehappymam 😊 @EatYourFive how did you get on yesterday?

Anyone with me today? Am on fd3 for this week. Aiming for c.600 cals because I have baked beans to use up so I'll have them on toast for tea!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 10/11/2022 09:50

Yesterday was fine, finished at under 500 (didn't do an exact count but definitely below). Annoyingly I forgot to weigh myself this morning but wasn't expecting a huge loss as didn't do a B2B. Will do a sort of mini today and have two small meals, on a normal fast day I would have just one small meal. Will also attempt a lunch time run, first time in almost a month!

Good luck today @harriethoyle!
