Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Well done @EatYourFive. How did the run go? I’ve been psyching myself up to get back into running, but life seems to get in the way.

Before I discovered fasting I wasn’t able to stick to anything either @Badlifeday. It became a way of life for me for years. It’s such a handy tool to have! However, as I soon discovered, it’s the NFDs I struggle with.

Did a b2b yesterday since didn’t feel hungry when I woke up. I always find a FD resets my appetite.

harriethoyle · 14/11/2022 07:54

Morning all. Who's with me today? I'm signing in for day one of a b2b...

absolutelyknackeredcow · 14/11/2022 08:01

Morning @harriethoyle I'm here and on day 2 of a b2b - my schedule is different this week so did one yesterday. Was dreading it but it was fine

harriethoyle · 14/11/2022 08:55

I'm so impressed @absolutelyknackeredcow I think weekend fasters are warriors!

OP posts:
beststepforward · 14/11/2022 09:17

Morning!
Had a very hungry week and didn't manage any fast days - I was 2lbs up yesterday and 4lbs up this morning so back on it today! Know most of it is water weight but really want to make a good dent into the 9 stone something. The lowest I've hit so far is 9st 13lbs so hopefully this week I can get lower!

Roll on FD.

EatYourFive · 14/11/2022 10:57

Hey I am fasting today, day 1 B2B. First B2B in quite a while, we'll see how it goes!

Onehappymam · 14/11/2022 12:41

I was supposed to be fasting yesterday.

All went well until after dinner when I ate aaallllllllll the snacks. The scales jumped up by 5lbs this morning, since Friday! My rings are tight on my fingers, so I know it’s mostly water weight and it’s my totm. So here I am, back again today.

SydneyCarton · 14/11/2022 13:05

No fasting but tracking today after a week off - office is being refitted, so WFH all week and no willpower. I have been running regularly though which I'm pretty pleased with, and B2B planned for Tuesday and Wednesday when I'm back in the (new much smaller) office.

EatYourFive · 14/11/2022 18:14

Hopefully that's just fluids @Onehappymam!

Fasting has been very hard today, for some reason have got some horrid bloaty stomach ache even though have had lots of water and fruit today, or maybe that's why? Anyway looking to close the kitchen at 506 in a bit.
How did other fasters get on today? @harriethoyle?

harriethoyle · 14/11/2022 19:19

Kitchen closing here on 598.

Good FD from you @EatYourFive - particularly if you're feeling a bit rough.

@beststepforward @Onehappymam how did you both get on?

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 14/11/2022 21:26

Well done @harriethoyle @EatYourFive
I'm closing on day 2 at 539

beststepforward · 15/11/2022 07:05

FD didn't work out yesterday. I forgot to take my medicine and it messed up my day.

Here's to trying again!

EatYourFive · 15/11/2022 07:48

Well dine @harriethoyle and @absolutelyknackeredcow, better luck next time @beststepforward!

I'm checking jn for day 2 B2B, feeling much better than last night. Will see whether to go for a day 3 on Thursday.

harriethoyle · 15/11/2022 08:10

That's the beauty of this WOL @beststepforward - you can just defer a FD by a day!

I'm also checking in @EatYourFive and will be here on Thursday too if you need a buddy 😊

Chattycathydoll · 15/11/2022 17:39

helloo fasters.
I’ve wandered into other diet threads and vanished again in shame but OMG, fasting has been a life-changer. I hit my highest weight a 6 weeks ago. My metabolism is soo slow. 1200 calories a day, gym 3x a week and daily 10k steps + home workout and I was losing maybe 1/2lb a week if that. Overall weight creeping up because I couldn’t sustain it and would overdo it on social occasions. It felt like a constant battle getting nowhere.

I started fasting using Zero. Did 16:8 sporadically in the past and weight didn’t change much but didn’t go up either.

The last few weeks I’ve been consistently fasting. After months of nothing I’ve lost 5lbs in 3 weeks!!! And you can really see the difference. When eating I’ve been paying attention to macros as well, focussing on protein so I can make the most of my gym time (doing weights as well as cardio has helped too). Just thrilled really and glad this thread exists for the support & to rave a bit about it!

harriethoyle · 15/11/2022 19:26

Kitchen closing at 770 which is a bit high for day 2 but because yesterday I was have averaged 700/day. Acceptable but not outstanding!

Back Thursday for a single FD if anyone is joining me

Badlifeday · 16/11/2022 06:56

I'm fasting today, have had a break due to an unpleasant cold and just can't make myself fast and be sick at the same time! But have of course used it as an excuse to eat body weight in chocolate and "sweets for my sore throat".
As long as I can get back on the horse...
Hope everyone is doing well 👍

SydneyCarton · 16/11/2022 14:59

For various reasons I ended up having a zero calorie FD yesterday (apart from three cups of tea) so today (day 2 of b2b) I have 1300 😋. Had a couple of crumpets for breakfast, no lunch and whatever I can find in the fridge for dinner for around 800. Probably left over reduced sushi from yesterday 🍱
