Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 21/10/2022 21:42

Well done @harriethoyle bet you looked amazing
I'm kitchen closed on 536

EatYourFive · 25/10/2022 10:47

Any fasters around today/this week? I was away for work all last week and now have some catching up to do.
Day 1 B2B today before some time off on Thursday and Friday.

Badlifeday · 25/10/2022 18:19

Yes I'm fasting @EatYourFive hope it goes well with you!

beststepforward · 28/10/2022 08:05

SV today after a week and a half maintaining (no fasts) for school hols. Did 1 fast on Wednesday

Well chuffed!

9st 13.8lbs. 9.5stone here I come!

Badlifeday · 28/10/2022 08:13

Well done, @beststepforward thats a great achievement!
I've just weighed myself - 3 fast days this week and my scales haven't budged by even a fraction of a pound. Am so disheartened.

EatYourFive · 28/10/2022 09:02

Oh no sorry to hear that @Badlifeday! I have had weeks like that and it is so frustrating. My weight loss in general is very slow but it's still going to the right direction so it's worth persevering.
My week hasn't gone to the plan as I tested positive for covid Tuesday lunch time and was feeling quite poorly by the end of the day. I therefore didn't count any calories in the end but on the other hand my appetite has been really poor so I probably did a B2B this week just because of that!

Is TOTM approaching? Sometimes the scales don't move but then you get a whoosh so hold on tight and keep going!

Badlifeday · 28/10/2022 18:02

Thank you both for the support! Weirdly I thought I'd been doing better this week - I'd banned chocolate bars which are my downfall - and I thought I'd lost weight.
oh well, I will trust in the system and keep going!

harriethoyle · 30/10/2022 17:27

Hello my friends - I'm back from my all inclusive holiday and dreading getting on the scales tomorrow 😆 b2b Mon and Tues and a single Thurs to try and undo the damage quickly...who's with me tomorrow?

OP posts:
Badlifeday · 30/10/2022 18:08

I am, @harriethoyle - did you have a good time?
I've finally shifted a pound so have hopefully broken through my plateau!

EatYourFive · 30/10/2022 19:48

Welcome back @harriethoyle, hope you had a lovely time! Good luck with the scales tomorrow, hope there isn't too much damage (although I am sure the holiday would have been worth it!).
Well done @Badlifeday, that must be encouraging!

I am wondering what to do about fasting this week. I have had some stomach issues and have finally got an appointment for a colonoscopy coming up next weekend, and think the prepping means no eating and a complete purge beforehand. Just wondering if I should fast this week or not as will do some fasting pre-colonoscopy anyway Anyone had any experience?
I am also still recovering from covid as well after my work trip so haven't done much fasting over the last two weeks.

harriethoyle · 31/10/2022 10:28

2.5kg on....!! 😂😜🙀

Good thing I'm doing three fasts this week! I tend to find if it goes on quick it comes off quick. I hope...

@EatYourFive when is your medical fast? if it's tomorrow or Weds I would skip FD this week, if it's Thurs onwards I'd probably do today I think...

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 31/10/2022 17:47

Could have been worse @harriethoyle, fingers crossed that will come off promptly!

harriethoyle · 31/10/2022 20:10

Kitchen closing on 618. First one back is always so hard but so satisfying!

@Badlifeday how did you get on?

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 31/10/2022 20:48

Hope you had a lovely time @harriethoyle
I'm day one of a b2b - currently on 520 but will have more tomorrow

harriethoyle · 01/11/2022 07:11

1.5kg off overnight which was clearly just alcohol bloat 😆😆🙈🙈 I suspect the last kilo will be a bit trickier 😬

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 01/11/2022 11:07

Day 1 of a b2b for me, no fasting for the last couple of weeks and haven’t been tracking cals either 😬. Got a bit lazy over half term. I did go for a run yesterday and came in with 200 cals to spare so off to a good start this week.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 01/11/2022 18:55

How is day two going everybody @harriethoyle

harriethoyle · 01/11/2022 20:00

@absolutelyknackeredcow kitchen closed on 618 again - exactly the same menu as yesterday 😆 how have you got on?

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 01/11/2022 21:04

Busy today so it's been easy - about the same 590

SydneyCarton · 01/11/2022 23:08

Finished on 482 which I’m really pleased with; two slices of toast, a banana and the remnants of a bag of salt popcorn 😋. That leaves me with just over 800 for day 2 tomorrow.

harriethoyle · 02/11/2022 14:59

Hope you're keeping strong @SydneyCarton ! I'm like the hungry caterpillar today and unlikely to be able to have my tea before 9pm tonight because of work which I HATE... Roll on FD3 tomorrow to finish the week in the right way!

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 02/11/2022 15:25

Doing OK on a few cups of tea so far @harriethoyle . I had to resist temptation this morning though when the DC were swapping their Halloween trick or treat hauls and offering me the ones they didn't like 😬9pm is late for tea, poor you!
