Fasting / 5:2 diet

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Hi, I've lurked a bit on this thread but not posted.

Been doing 5:2 for 10 weeks and I'm struggling so much. I fast Monday and Weds and on Weds I'm dizzy and exhausted from lunchtime onwards. I'm snappy with the kids find it near impossible to concentrate at work. I've just had to come to bed as feel terrible.

Do others feel like this?! I liked the simplicity of the diet (ie only had to think about food 2 days a week) and I generally eat well anyway just very sedentary at the mo as working a lot and then home with the kids.

I just feel like it's interfering with my life in a really negative way. I've definitely lost a bit of weight but not sure it's worth it.

Kitchen closed on 600-ish for day 2, which makes about 1500 in total for the b2b. Still feeling pretty hungry so off to bed, looking forward to a glass of wine tomorrow evening 😀

I don't find this unfortunately @Randomuser9876 but if you're eating properly on the Tues you shouldn't be that affected by the Weds. Are you inadvertently restricting on the Tuesday?

Supposed to be fasting today but getting bloods done in a moment and just can't face fasting .. should I battle on until 4pm then eat or just cave in...

I was supposed to fast today but now I am going for drinks after work with a friend instead.😁Evenings out don't happen very often these days so have to make the most of it.

I'm tentatively going to try for a fast tomorrow.

Been feeling so low for a few weeks with stresses of various kinds, and have given up on so many fasts that I'm worried I won't be able to do one now! 😞

But my poor system is crying out for one after I've pigged out for so long... So going to give it a go. I need it for the reset.

I'll be honest, I'm going for a 0-cal like I usually do... If I really can't make it, it'll just turn to an ordinary OMAD. Setting a calorie limit just messes with my head and sends me into the freezer for ice cream!!!

Argh it's a failed FD for unfortunately, I have got a migraine and I will have to eat something. Not had a migraine for ages and have to pack and prepare for my trip tomorrow so had no choice but to give up. Will be back her next week after my trip, hopefully the work trip weight gain will be reasonable.
