Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Tuesday FD here as well, back in the office after some time just WFH. Not sure about tomorrow as teachers' strikes loom again, so likely to be at home working and keeping an eye on the smallest who will be off school.

I have been raiding the biscuit tin so frequently at the moment - I think I am not drinking enough fluids and tea, though delicious, isn't really hydrating me enough, so making an effort to get more water down me and see if it helps with the hunger. That said, I haven't eaten today yet - prefer OMAD when fasting - and don't feel too bad. It's just once I start I can't stop!

harriethoyle · 14/03/2023 13:40

I got really excited when I heard the train strikes had been cancelled @SydneyCarton but then I looked and the RMT strike is still on which means driving to work on Thursday and Friday. Last time took me almost 5 hours one day...

@harriethoyle 5 hours!!Shock There's a tube strike tomorrow but unless it's absolutely chucking down with rain I can walk to the office from the station, so I should be OK. Quite fancy going on strike myself, everyone else is!

harriethoyle · 14/03/2023 19:25

Kitchen closing here on638 which makes an almost perfect 1299 for my b2b 🤣 looking forward to breakfast tomorrow but aiming for a mini to offset the weekend damage. Sub 1000 cals will do me...

Kitchen closed on 646 for me today… I’m so glad to get the B2b out of the way early doors! looking forward to breakfast tomorrow!

SydneyCarton · 14/03/2023 21:18

I’m going to call it a mini today as biscuits might have been consumed. At least I also managed some homemade chicken fried rice and sushi so relatively healthy.

EatYourFive · 14/03/2023 21:39

Excellent work fasters! Kitchen closed at around 600 here, managed to eat properly (no snacking) today, including dinner, so feeling much better. Can't wait to have some posh sourdough for breakfast!
So glad now I no longer live/work in London and don't have to worry about tube strikes and such!

summersanchez · 15/03/2023 07:59

I am fasting today after a lapse of some years
Aiming for a "clean fast", zero calories for the whole day (total of 36 hours)
Anyone want to join me?

summersanchez · 15/03/2023 08:00

I had meant to fast yesterday but DH started making toast and I failed miserably

mumlikeaboss · 15/03/2023 08:29

@summersanchez I do zero-cal as well usually, and was toying with the idea of doing one today... Maybe I should join you!

Only prob is going to my mum's tonight so might end up caving and eating dinner 😏😏 will lyk how it goes 🤞🏻

summersanchez · 15/03/2023 08:32

Brilliant mumlikeaboss
I guess if you aim for a full day fast that's good, and even if you eat this evening you'll have maybe 18-24 hours of clean fasting under your belt

harriethoyle · 15/03/2023 08:54

I'll be cheering you on from the sidelines @mumlikeaboss @summersanchez 💪

@summersanchez I actually had a lunchtime window yesterday so I'm up to 20-ish hours already 😁😁 If I have dinner, I'll have got to 28/30 hours 👍🏻 which TBH I'd be pretty happy with.

Hohoholdthesherry · 15/03/2023 09:33

I finished my B2B on 700 so happy with that. It'll be a mini tomorrow as we are going to a very fancy restaurant for our wedding anniversary and I want to enjoy it to the max! Most unlike me, I'm also out for dinner on Friday and then on Saturday for a friend's birthday. So there may have to be another mini, I'll see how I go!

summersanchez · 15/03/2023 10:26

That's great mumlikeaboss
Well done and happy anniversary hohoholdthesherry

TeaRose29 · 15/03/2023 11:14

Planning a B2B of 800 each day for today and tomorrow. I’m now at the weight where it is really hard to shift those last few pounds, but I am determined! Played tennis for 2 hours yesterday and am also playing later today. Will be playing with 3 blokes, but they are all over 70 and none of them move, so I’ll be doing all the running!

summersanchez · 15/03/2023 13:07

Good luck tearose
I'm probably going to try skipping breakfast tomorrow
My children are home - teacher strikes- and i think they'll want to go to a cafe so that will make it harder to fast b2b but I like the idea of getting on a roll with it
My waist is soooooo big, I can't even bear to measure it

summersanchez · 15/03/2023 15:46

OMG I'm hungry

harriethoyle · 15/03/2023 19:35

I find cold days much harder @summersanchez . How have you got on?

I've just had courgetti for tea which was actually very tasty! Granola and yoghurt is calling to me though...

OP posts:
summersanchez · 15/03/2023 19:39

You've done well
I caved at 20 hours

summersanchez · 15/03/2023 19:40

Definitely harder because I was cold and the reading I had to do was boring

summersanchez · 15/03/2023 19:41

I'll try another 24 hours tomorrow

harriethoyle · 15/03/2023 20:28

summersanchez · 15/03/2023 19:39

I wasn't fasting 😆 today's an easy day!

Tomorrow, may be a different story... anyone joining me in FD3?

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 15/03/2023 21:22

Sorry not this time @harriethoyle, I have to WFH with the kids not at school (reminds me of the good old lockdown days!!), think it's safe to say that food and snacks galore will be needed to get through the ordeal!

mumlikeaboss · 15/03/2023 23:27

@summersanchez well done on your 20 hours. I made it to 26 - caved when DS started eating peanuts in the car, being stuck in traffic always makes me want to nibble!! 🤣

Had a short 3-hour window and a lovely healthy dinner, fairly low carb too 😇 so I'm happy with today.

Good luck everyone tomorrow.
